Hi all

I have a '53 plate A3 with interior light kit. I've noticed recently the puddle light and the door open light don't come on when I open the door on the drivers side. The passenger door lamp is fine.

Any suggestions on how to fix the problem, perhaps its a common problem?

Many thanks

..Tony

when you say the door open light do you mean the interior roof cluster or a light in the door?

If the lights that don't work are in the door it is possible that there is a loose connection in the door. If it is also the lights in the roof cluster that don't come on then there may be something wrong with the switch\sensor that tells the car when the door is open.

Then it would seem that either the bulbs in the door have gone, or more likely that the wires\connector inside the door has some sort of fault.

This post has the workshop manual diagrams on how to remove the interior door panel.

If your car is still under warranty then a quick trip to the dealer might be the best bet.

Yeh, I agree with Marc. Being an older car a problem often develops with the flexing of the wires due to the opening and closing of the driver's door.

Sounds like could be the loom in the door itself or the loom in the pillar, door isnt a problem but pillar is a ****, what you need to do is open the door, pull back the rubber pillar loom cover by pinching the sides so it unclips & push some wires inwards towards the car chassis to see if it has a short & pin loose on the big connector & makes lights work again.

Same principle with the door wiring, remove the piano black strip by pulling from one end slowly of then it slides back a little to release the plastic lugs pushed into the door, then unscrew I think 3-4 screws under that strip, unscrew the screw on underside of the door panel, then pull it of from the bottom first slowly & carefully cause the pressure clips can break, then lift of at the top from the window area lip, watch the door lever cable, simple to take of & put back, then do the same on the door module itself interms of pin connections push in etc.

If you have a meter then do a test for voltage right at the lights connectors themselves, thats the 1st & most simple way to check where fault may lay & work backwards.

I think the lights for doors are all on same circuit arent they Marc or independent, thinking fuses?

'borrow' one/both of the bulbs from the other door to test in the non working door if you dont have a meter, and dont want to pull your door apart.

I doubt you'll have a wiring problem on a 53 plate, my money is on the bulb needing replacement

Yeah but he said more than one wasnt working fella thats why we thought wiring as its unusual 2 at same time, not unheard of but unusual, but a good suggestion.

Consilio, your parking sensors, do they just beep from the boot or does it interact with the DIS & radio mute etc?

they should be indepenent shouldn't they? No point in turning on the light under the passenger door if you've opened the driver's door.

As far as I know the light in the boot doesn't come on when the doors are opened. Should be the same principle. The computer is intelligent enought to tell you which door is open on the DIS, so one would have to assume it can use this same logic to turn on the lights on the opened door only.

I know what you are saying, but i dont think its that unusual for 2 bulbs manuactured at the same time to blow around the same time. The red light may have also blown and gone unnoticed some time before, as I only really notice the puddle lights.

No the sensors seem to work independently of eveythign else. The radio does not mute and nothing on the DIS, which can be a bit annoying if you have the music turned up.

Thats true also, fair point fella, could have shorted so the filament in the 2nd bulb could be weak & a little short could have blown both, it sounds like same circuit anyway for both so you could very well be right matey.

Okay just confirms it all as thought & others, I am working on a mod fella for muting so watch this space for that, have few ideas when doing the PDC.

Sounds interesting, is that a VAG COM change?

PDC? In my world thats a Primary Domain Controller for NT4 domains... what do you mean?

No its a mod I am working on with maybe using the reverse camera pin on the rns which need 12v on to switch to cam/media adapter or relays on the speakers through rear amp to mute or using the mute pin on the rns.

But something to know for you all, the last option funnily enough has a little unknown hidden problem, when you connect the btooth oem, the mute pin does seem to be disabled from using with anything else, so it only allows the mute pin to work when the btooth requests mute, can you beleive that.

So my theory of mute pin for reverse signal was 1st out the door, so I will be testing this theory when I have repaired my laptop with new screen tomorrow, to see if when I disable/unplug btooth from the CAN if the mute pin goes back to full functionality, gotta update PetrolDave on this to over on navplus, be a **** if it does disable the pin with btooth, seems to be CAN switched so when btooth is in use, it sends signal on CAN to rns to say ok enable mute pin, then btooth sends mute ground & then radio mutes with btooth on certain speaker, then when its finished the call its releases the ground & then sends signal on CAN again to rns to disable the mute pin again, can you fecking believe that.

I will be testing all my theories this weekend I hope in prep for my Primary Domain Controller fitment.(park distance control they used to call it)

Yeah great fun maintaining domains huh, glad I dont sit in essex supporting the world on a subbing job anymore, god remoting over a vpn to a laptop in portugal was a real PIA, ****** vpn was so slow as it actually went to LA to the concentrator then back to europe, joy huh especially since the fecking link to LA was something ridiculously small, we're talking k's not Mb's

Sounds like a whole can of worms, good luck with that.

That sounds like my last technical job! Things are different now running my own IT business, mainly working remotely from my office, at home.

I decide how big the pipes need to be now

Yeah but I'll get to the end of it & post for others later.

Yeah thats mostly what I do mate from home, Logmein is brilliant for that huh, lol. I mainly host & email systems, dont bother with internal systems so much anymore as to much hassle, I setup nas, email, host & support by the job for software etc, maintenance is in IMHO becoming obsolete for smaller companies or will be in the near future, it'll be back to the thin client/citrix style days with the SAS thats slowly coming in & online for everything, its gone completely round except now everything will be on the net rather than direct links site to site for mainframe access, love ittttttttt.

Am I a geek to love technology????

But the sub job was paying 5k a month so that was the bonus, but all good things come to a head huh & the good pay sometimes didnt warrant the **** that came with it

i have a 53 plate 8P. I noticed the lights on the back of the door didnt work when i first bought the car (a year ago) it was under warrenty at the time so i took it too a dealer only to be told all the fittings where there less cables :-(

Was it supposed to be mate, cause unless you have interior light pack it doesnt include these does it?? They could just be the reflectors in place instead of the lights, no?

You know what audi are like, tight as the ducks.................

I would be surprised to hear if it was missed of the checklist, really would, they are german afterall, they dont miss those kinda things, especially audi, but always a 1st huh fella.

TRAMSDEN, any luck with our suggestions mate???

Thanks for all the suggestions chaps.. The car is still under cover so i'll take it down to the dealer and get it fixed from them. Its really inconvenient to do so but rather than my usual diy botch, it should be done without damaging the car.

No worries fella, but do let us know what was the cause, then someone on here can gloat they were right, lol, hopefully me, lol, kidding.

Just come back from the dealer, they said that the door lock was faulty?? and a bulb had blown. I hadn't noticed anything wrong with the lock but i'm happy to have it fixed. They even washed and vac'ed it.. I'm happy anyhow.

lol, of all things, bulb gone & door lock, makes sense now I guess as door lock would signal to say its open which inturn would say light bulb, another thing learnt today.

Glad it fixed, but my stealership washed the ****** car when they were renovating so brick dust all over it when arrived back & also lite swirls I'm guessing from washing with brick dust on the car, *******!!

Its not to bad so I'll just polish with compound to bring laquer out again.
