Hi,

After a bit of advice please, done a bit of searching, but not really sure.

1. Right had my A3 1.8T Sport since end of December, but just in the last week or 2 the temp gauge has crept above 90 to around 95. Checked the coolant level and that seems fine.

What other things could it be? I know there are probably many things, but just the obvious, common ones?

2. I'm looking to do my first oil change since owning the car, I'm guessing its wise to change the oil filter at the same time too? Thinking of going for this oil and filter combo from Opie. Just wondered if you guys recommend this oil and filter?

Thanks!

Stan, the same thing happened to me last week. After a period of the temp dropping to 70 and back up to 90, it finally overheated.

I tried a new stat, hoping it had stuck shut. Only 30 dollars, nil fix, had to be the water pump.

New belt, pump, tensioner and roller just fitted. 4 hours on the drive. Tap Dave up, he has plenty of time on his hands now!!

Get it looked at soon or check your AA cover.

Check this too. http://www.vwwatercooled.org.au/newforum/upload/showthread.php?t=12492

Has it had the cambelt changed yet? If so was the water pump changed? If not then change both soon.

Yes, if the water pump is on its way out, it's only a matter of time before it seizes and strips the cambelt taking out most of your 20 valves along the way.

According the service book, the cambelt was done at 80K and my car is on 89K. I just emailed the previous owner to see if the waterpump was done at the same time.

Could it be the thermostat?

Also has anyone used that oil I linked to?

Cheers.

1. Temp Sender Change; common fault; £30.00 to sort and 5 mins to do
2. Thermostat; comes hand in hand with the sender; £30/40 for parts + labour to do it, bit of a ****** to get to IIRC.
3. On the oil, I hear a few people talk about the Fuchs stuff though I have never used it I still use the Castrol SLX and a standard VAG Oil Filter. Price is good though as always with Opieoils

Ok the previous owner says the water pump wasn't done :(

Its due for its service in 1000mile (my first with the car). Does anyone know the rough cost to get the water pump changed?

Do you think I should get the service done now and the water pump changed or wait?

Also whats the cost of a typical service? Or do they vary massively?

Sorry for all the questions! Help is appreciated!

Cheers.

Stan, got you confused with another Stan I know in Preston.

Sample prices for water pump and belt changes in the link. Not sure that I'd be that keen to drive to Stoke if the pump is iffy. Mine was boiling up in about 5 miles.

Thanks for the link Gavin! Nice website and they seem like a decent place, have you dealt with the them before, are they good? You think its worth traveling the 60 mile, or getting somewhere closer to me. The only place I know is the Audi Dealer about 2 miles away and I'm guessing they will be more pricey.

Audi would charge £99+VAT per hour so at £35+VAT per hour you have saved £60 all ready which would pay for the 60 mile trip! As it's done nearly 90k I would take it to a specialist like PSI

Andy, Used to work at Awesome before going it alone. I send my Father in Law there, now that I live in Australia and he lives in Wigan.

The only concern for me is if the pump quits altogether on the way there, you'll need a tow.

There is a place in Blackpool that is pretty good but their name escapes me. The fella running the servicing used to be at the VW dealer in Blackpool. His name is Pete.

Cool, cheers for the help! Much appreciated! I will give PSI a call and book my car in :) I also noticed they do CC remaps which is tempting!
