Anyone put an S3 up against a Mk5 Golf GTI?

I really like the look of the MK5 GTI, has really grown on me. Are a few on edition38 at the moment that look great with a drop and some different wheels.

The edition 30 has the S3 engine in it also so can remap higher than the normal GTI.

ye my parents have just bought the edition 30, an wow its awsomly fast, bbs rims, uprated suspension, but has the chavvy burberry seats but they still look good. im jealous!!
But tbh, u guys seem to be comparing the gti's with the new S3's, eh??? if anything the gti is closer to the high spec a3, surley if ur comparing cars then you'd have to compare it to the mk5 R32, which is more closely matched.

Well i came across my first Mk 5 GTI since owning my S3 today
I know it was unfair as mine is remapped and i doubt his was..... so really there was only ever going to be one outcome.....
all i can say is.......bye bye GTI.......he never had a chance !!

I'm still going to line the 2 of them up and see what happens! I'll get my mate to drive the GTI and then we'll swap, I hope the S3 comes up with the goods! That damn GTI does get to 60 very quickly though.. But then again I have been driving it like I stole it which is something I don't do with the S3! I have the occasional outburst but the rest of the time is gear change bfore I boost!

All the above will happen on an old runway at my place of work of course.

Only one way to settle this, as per... FIGHT!

If we all wanted the fastest cars, we would spend it on stripped out Caterham kitcars IMO. We all know that they just aint practical. having the fastest car is just pub ammo, and a sure fire way of getting you in front of a judge. I can now rest easy everytime the old bill drives near me, as i drive my TDi like a old man compared to the way I was in the S4.
All this talk of S3's beating STi's? They are 4 second cars, which grip like **** to a blanket in all conditions.

Have you driven an STI..........?? Understeery as fxxk when pushed, better than a stock s3,by miles of course, but grip like **** to a blanket.........?? you clearly weren't driving it hard enough! The understeer can be dialed out with chassis mods, as it can be to huge effect with an S3, but as stock they understeer badly when pushed.

The only STI that will grip like **** to a blanket is the oozing puss blisters from genital herpes!!

Well I put these two up against each other today.. On an old runway at work.

From 0 to whatever I was doing.. The Audi left it! I've got used to driving the GTI over the past few weeks and was pleasantly surprised with the S3 today when I picked it up.. The turbo is quite evil compared to the GTI! I know the S3 is mapped so it's bound to be.. My cousin drove the GTI and just said I was gone from the start, I was surprised at how much it was pulling away! By the time I got in 6th I was way ahead! I think it's having to change to 3rd for 60 mph that made me doubt it in the first place! It may have tansmission losses but a mapped S3 is much quicker than the GTI.. We had a few do's and it couldnt get near it!

Thats good to hear, i always thought that surely a mapped S3 must be quicker...on paper the 210bhp S3 is as quick as the Gti.

here's an STI chasing my GTI down the main straight @ 135mph My (Polo) GTI (235bhp/1190kgs) had no trouble staying ahead, ..corners were another matter

The 8P Audis are boxy and old looking, they'll date VERY quickly, whereas the Golf is aerodynamic and is a modern equivalent of the 8L Audis in terms of styling.

I agree with this comment entirely. The 8P is really starting to look like a box on wheels now. They need to bring out a new model.

Back on topic though. I think a standard 8L S3 will beat a MK5 GTi because I've got one.
