Anyone put an S3 up against a Mk5 Golf GTI?

The point i was trying to make was generally front wheel drive cars of similar size weigh around 1200kgs, power at the wheels doesnt seem to be much of an issue & i can only assume the gear setup allows you to hit 60in 2nd which does make a difference.

I m not here to have an argument but my S3 is mapped & the golf i spoke of (above) may have been mapped also.
 
I've seen that the Mk5 has a general 0-60 in around 7.2s and the S3 around 6.6s! It's probably that extra change to hit 60 that is making me think the Mk5 is better! It seriously annoys me how you have to be in 3rd to hit 60 but then again I'm sure i've hit 60 in 2nd in it and only had to do the extra change when the map wasnt working to its full capacity, I might be wrong though! I'll test these 2 when the Audi is back and let you know the results!

I was speaking in general terms not about your encounter.

We were speaking about the MKV GTI and i made a statement that a S3 " should " be faster and that there will not be a lot in it , but you just disregarded it right off.

I'm not on here to argue either , and i'm certainly not slaggin off the GTI.

yeah i agree it should be faster, i just dont think it is in standard form. I m even considering the Edition 30 with a map as my next car instead of an S3.

There was a standard Edition30 at a rolling road day the other week, on rollers where most peoples remapped cars were making was less power than they expected, and his made 237Bhp with the nicest graph ever.

Plus, they look about 1 billion times nicer than the 8P S3.
 
you can a lot more power sucked out of them with not a lot of work rather than the standard GTI

Dont get me wrong, I like the look of the 8L S3s.

8P A3s and S3s look rubbish.

The Ed30 Golfs with their BBS CH looking wheels and the smoothness look great, especially in white.

My Std 8P S3 make's 280+bhp and up to 300lbft on two different RR's and i have the plots to prove it! :whistle2:

Ok, im a fan of the S3 8L, otherwise i wouldnt have bought one....but to say the golf looks better? are you blind? the golf looks like what you pay for....the interior is 'more' boring than the A3/S3 (as this isnt that great TBH), the side windows are like patio doors.... the overall stance is higher.... they are much more of a budget car in appearance
 
The Golf and S3 engine map to EXACTLY the same. (& Leon)

The 8P Audis are boxy and old looking, they'll date VERY quickly, whereas the Golf is aerodynamic and is a modern equivalent of the 8L Audis in terms of styling.

How high are 8L S3s as standard? they look like landrovers!!!

I know they map to the same mate , but it's no good having 315bhp if you can't use it fully till second or third gear in the dry! :yes:

S3 L 4214 W 1959 H 1399 WE 1455
ED30 L 4204 W 2010 H 1485 WE 1328

Did you see the recent VWperformance mag? The Cupra was over 2 seconds faster round a track than the ED30 , and the S3 was faster than the Cupra! :)

I'm sure the S3 is faster, they dont half charge a premium over the other two so it bloomin well should be!

And again, can people stop thinking the Haldex is some magic device that gives them infinite grip in the wet?

Its 'OK' but its not a real AWD diff.

If we all wanted the fastest cars, we would spend it on stripped out Caterham kitcars IMO. We all know that they just aint practical. having the fastest car is just pub ammo, and a sure fire way of getting you in front of a judge. I can now rest easy everytime the old bill drives near me, as i drive my TDi like a old man compared to the way I was in the S4.
All this talk of S3's beating STi's? They are 4 second cars, which grip like **** to a blanket in all conditions.

No one said it is my mate!

The 8P/mkV Haldex is upgraded over the 8L/mkIV , so it's better already.

What you lack in grip over Torson you make up in less weight , less transmission losses , and better fuel economy....so it's not all bad!

End of the day my mate , any Haldex is better than no Haldex/FWD for getting the power down and grip!

If you could spec the same items that come as Std on the S3 there wouldn't much change in it!

Full leather
Heated seats
Haldex/LSD
Extra power.

Yes the new one is a GOOD car and will beat a S3 on the track and in a drag......but IMHO they look nasty , a T-reg 1.6 Ford Focus with Lexus lights and wheels the size of marbles!

And i was the one who brought STI's up, and if you had bothered to read my thread you would have got the full explanation, i kept with this 53 plate up hill from a rolling start to 120mph...i did not dream this nor was this fella playing with me..... i can only assume (as i said previously) that he was a crap driver or had more weight onboard..... he made a special effort to go the same direction as me, and span back onto the same road in the opposite direction after we had had our fun..... i would never ordinarily try with a scoob...but after a suggestion that they werent out of the relms...i was given an opportunity to see..in this scenario, the result was clear..... although wouldnt be suprised if i got beaten in my next attempt as i know they are notoriously fast:hi:

that said....just had a play with a Bora with FMIC on full view...... stayed with me on 2 runs, off the blocks i pulled 2 car lengths, but he stayed that distance maybe ever so slightly edging up:racer:
 
Must of had a fair bit if work done to it if it was keeping with you, besides the 1.8T they do witch only has about 150bhp stanndard, they do a 2.8 v6 4 motion too, but you should have no worries with that !!
 
yeah, i thought instantly 'turbo' his FMIC was soo not subtle.... boring fecker too,wouldnt ackowledge me, i waved him by eventually....there is a limit i will go on roads and he was just being an **** where it wasnt nesessary...obviously makes a habit of trying to make a fool of other cars...wouldnt have known the FMIC before coming on here

Yeah the Ed30 is a Mk5, bet they are quick as this standard one is quick! I must admit I'm really enjoying driving the Golf, I drove the Mk4 1.8T GTI when it came out and I wasn't impressed.. I think theyve got this one bang on.

I think the MKVI is out later this year so maybe some bargains to be had on the MKV.

well when i looked in Jan, you could pick a Mk V up for £11k, 2.0T...which was cheap as chips:respekt:........ interior and overall appearence put me off.... advantages having a newer car maybe but the disadvantages far out weighed the advantages....especially as id have to pay an extra £1500 on top of my S3 price....rather wait and buy an 8P S3....or M3 when im ready
 
MKVI already? That came around quick! I'd buy a MKV but then again I may chance my mind when the S3 is back. I wouldnt mind a go in the 8P S3, bet it's even more fun than the GTI.
