On the lookout for an S3...

Been thinking about it for a while and have finally decided to do it. I'm currently driving a 25th anniversary golf gti diesel which I'm looking to sell if anyone is interested, hint hint!

I'm hoping to have up to 8K to spend on it so I'm guessing it'll probably be a late '99 early '00 model with around 80,000 miles on it. Can anyone who's got one of this age vouch for good build quality and reliability? Also, as it'll only be 210 model, how much would a remap cost to get up to 225+?

Any info or tips welcomed

i just got a late 99 model with 70k on it. i payed just under 7k for it and its mint and mechanically sound, if you keep your eyes peeled the right one will come along sooner or later,

be warned tho there is a shocking number of cat d / cat c or clocked s3's out there as i found out when looking for one so be sure to check the history, particulary from dealers (they like to buy em cheap knowing they are cat write off's and then bump 2k on the price and neglect to mention that they have been written off or clocked)

If you have 8k you should be just able to get a face lift one don't bother with a 99' make sure it's a face lift you might have to push the budget a few hundred to get a good one though, don't worry about being 210 bhp they all remap the same, you should get 265bhp for £500. Have a look at some of the sticky threads, ess has put some good stuff up on there about buying and tuning.

nice car mate, i especially like the S3's with the 2 tone interior. How much did you sell it for if you don't mind me asking? Got a feeling it'll be a while 'til I can start looking as I think my Golf will take a while to sell being a limited edition.

8k in end, really ****** me of letting go so cheap to be honest but it just sat around not being used anymore, double tax, insurance etc just made it worse so better to let go & get the money I say, I had my fun & did alot to it as you could see/read, loved that car.

What Golf is it mate? Tdi 150 Anni? Black, Red or Silver? How many miles? I've got a minter of an S3 which I may let go if the deal was right. Only saying I might! I may change my mind tomorrow as I havent had it long at all but always loved the mk4 Anni's

You'll be able to sell your Anniversary easily enough, they are very sought after cars, especially the diesel variants.

I'd echo the comments made by other people, go and view Maz's old yellow S3. Even I'm tempted to get it, and I hated my old S3! That's how good it is.

Hopefully I'll be able to do a swap with mine for an S3, but obviously depends on the car. I definately don't have any extra to put down on top of my Golf.

My anni is silver and is now clocking on to 92K, so it's not low milage, but mostly motorway miles, definately doesn't feel like it's done that many.

Anyone got a link to Maz's car? I do like them in yellow, but would be a bit worried about it attracting too much unwanted attention

i may be selling mine soon, ok it would be a few more penny's than 8k but its a 330+bhp yellow s3
Just thought id say incase u decide u want the power no matter the cost.

65k 1999 FASH etc.

drives nice, pulls hard, exhaust is a tad loud so may not suit u if u dont like that kinda thing.

Porsche front brake kit, ihi turbo kit, front mounted intercooler,bbs alloys etc.

recently had the coil packs/sparks changed too
