Hi I've just been told today that the A3 1.9TDi sportback that I ordered last week may never arrive. Apparently Audi have stopped taking orders due to unprecendented market forces both nationally and globally. Has anyone heard anything about this?

This is exactly probably why. Everyone is getting stupid with this Co2 crap. Because it'll cost them £35 a year to tax they think it's great! I'd rather have the 2.0L TDI any day and pay £100 more on tax, it's a miles better engine and gives you more smiles per gallon.
I drive a 2.0 TDi Sport 3dr at the moment but due to a new grandson I need a 5 door car. Financial constraints forced me to look at the 1.9 sportback. I am beginning to regret it now. I have placed an order with Audi Stockport and it is the guy there that told me there was a problem. In fairness to him I must wait a few days to find out if he is correct.
Maybe your dealer was able to sell your build slot to somebody else and is feeding you some ******** to explain it away...

Last year the UK did so well it was able to pull production lines to meet demand. But this year Audi have a little problem that the German market and euro markets are picking up so the UK are down the pile on the factory priorities. Which is why some people will be waiting a hell of a long time for an audi wether it is an A8 or and A3....
Simple supply and demand, Audi simply did not anticipate how successful it was going to be in the UK.

A/ The 1.9tdi is miles cheaper to buy
B/ The 1.9tdi is miles cheaper to run (much better mpg and cheaper roadtax)
C/ You can drive into London free of charge in a 1.9tdi.
No denying the 2.0tdi is a better engine, but I can easily see why people go for the 1.9tdi instead.
You have to accept the relative lack of refinement/performance means diddly-squat to some people.
You may think this "Co2 thing" is "stupid", but plenty of other people don't.
It's been proven that it's becoming a major factor in some people's car buying decision.
Legislation will also make it more attractive.
So, quite frankly, you ignore Co2 levels at your peril.
iv'e been told the same by Northampton Audi regarding the delay on the 1.9tdi also, i'm waiting on an update as to how long the delay is......
As you've had both, I guess you're as good as any to make comments, is the 1.9 really that worse in terms of refinement than the 2.0?
Very happy with my 1.9tdi and with my remap I get half decent levels of performance and an average mpg of 46, which is creeping up with miles.
It could do with a sixth gear on the motorway, definitely and its not particularly quiet in comparison to the latest diesels, but being used to diesels its not too bad for me at all.
I think its got a touch smoother and quieter with a few miles on it as well - maybe i've just got used to it..

Not sure whether it's the same engine but I've got a 56 plate Jetta 1.9tdi until my A3 arrives and I think it's pretty good tbh. I especially like being able to get 500 miles + out of one tank of fuel when none of my last 4 or 5 cars even got to 300!
