Pirelli GTI

I'm glad its okay. You obviously were talking about me! You have a golf, skoda and 911 in your sig, which cars yours and why you on an A3 forum

I do like the golf myself, but as an all round "feel good" package, the A3 is hard to beat!

You really do have a high opinion of yourself, don't you!
Do you think I'd go out of my way to talk about you?
Sorry...I have a life...

Let me see...they are all mine.
Bought and paid for by my own money.
Just like the S3 before the 911...and the ITR before that, etc, etc...

I'm on an Audi Forum...because I'm a 'Moderator'.
That lends itself to being on quite a lot - including in the A3 section believe it or not...and since I was on here way back in the Sport-3.net days, before it was Audi-Sport.net...and since I've given up numerout hours of my time, unpaid, keeping this place running since...I think I can post in whatever section I like.
Part of the Moderator function is to pay attention to all sections (including the A3 section) and stimulate discussion...whether individual members like my comments or not...that's irrelevant.

The difference being, I still devote my time to being on here and helping out, despite selling my S3...unlike many others who will never visit again once they've sold the 'latest fashion/feel good Audi' and moved onto the next greatest/bestest car in the whole world ever.

Those enough reasons for you?

...and back on topic, I think the Pirelli Edition will sell and quietly bacome a bit of a 'Cult' car, like many of the VW special editions before it (Campaign models, 20th Anniversary, 25th Anniversary, Edition 30 Golfs, Storm Scirroco/Corrado)

It's different...I'd consider one if I were after a Golf GTI right now...
Any news on the pricing?

I'm not fully taken by the choice of wheels...so perhaps one of the remaining Ed30s may be a better option? Who knows...

I have to say i really like the look of the Pirelli GTI :yum:

The MKV GTI in general is a fantastic car and the extra 30PS and some goodies would make it even better imo..

I had a regular 200Bhp version before the A3 and as much as i like my Audi there's no escaping the fact that the Golf is way ahead in dynamic ability, driver involvement and more importantly, FUN!
Even my wife complains now and again that she misses 'her GTi' as she's missing the handling, fun and the noise lol!

We only chopped in the GTI as it was a little flaky in the build quality dept, not quite a friday afternoon car, more a thursday morning one i suppose but enough niggles to take the shine off for us, although i know lots of very happy owners and would definately have another, if i could guarantee a good 'un...

Saying that, i love my A3 for it's interior, the looks, the toys and i'm really sold on the torquey diesel driving style and 50mpg, and when mapped the performance differential isn't 'that' far off, but...
The Gti is more fun to drive no matter which way you cut it and i always think twice before taking one on down the local lanes...

I'll Pm you mate if that's ok?
Saves taking this thread off topic and opening the can of worms that is 'my mapping software is better than yours' that usually ensues lol!

Agree with much of the above. The main obstacle to going back to a Gti from an S3 is the quattro element.

The 200ps Gti is std form just isnt nearly fast enough, so you MUST have it mapped and then its fantastic, and I imagine the 230ps special eds are similar. Hoewever it does get frustrating when you cant get the power down in the first 3 gears untils its perfectly dry day......enter the AUDI S3 !
Out of all the current MK5 Gtis a Candy white ED30, specced up to the nuts would be just fine, 2nd only to my sprint S3.

Syncro 2008 model Scirrocco, anyone ??

cheers
Paul

Did you see my post with the exhaust beddie?
I did Nathan, cheers for the pics mate
Definately going to get the tails done soon, just need to get a few other jobs done first for the impending 'ring trip in June, then it's hello tailpipes lol!

why is it the stealers fault?

surely it's the market that dictates the prices not some Next suited bod in a gin palace?

Because they steal your money, silly.

But it has been a hard lesson learned, so will have to stick with the A3 for the time being, as i cannot afford to loose 6.5K in 4 months.

We'll just have to see if the depreciation slows down in the last year so the car will be half the value of the purchase price £26,500.

Ess, the pricing is exactly the same as the ED30, you get basically the same spec, but the price includes the colour (except Sun flower yellow, which won't be realised for the UK market), and also includes Front centre armrest and tinted glass, the tyre thread seats and leather/alcantara too.

Also the engine is a de-tuned S3, and has the same larger turbo as the new S3, not like the original GTI(200). So a remap will release a huge chunk of that turbo, usually about 310 PS.

[Threadjack]

So it's true!!! No wonder so many mods (on another forum that I visit) get themselves into bitch fights!

I'm not saying my car is the best car in the world because its obviously not. My point is I don't like golfs, is that okay?

ahh but you did say that Audi's have better build quality, which is cack

I have an A3, my Dad has the Golf.

I like his car, he likes mine but we both chose our cars for different reasons. He preferred the handling of the Golf and was prepared to sacrifice the interior being not quite as good whereas I was prepared to sacrifice the handling for what I felt was a nicer car in every other area. At a price of course...

Depends what is important to you in a car personally. Both happy with what we have.

I prefer the look of a normal GTI with the 18" diamond cut wheels to the ED30 or Pirelli versions

I think the conclusion should be Audi has the better quality plastics etc whereas the Golf is dynamically superior so the individuals choice is based on their preference, neither car/brand is cack IMO, but then having an open mind is obviously unusual :)

I wonder what the guys on UKMKV would say ?

Excuse my ignorrance... So is the ED30 a de tuned s3 engine or is it a chipped Gti engine?

If they improve the interior plastics on the Mk6 could be a winner if priced correctly..

I've not owned a mkV golf so I could be wrong here, but I didn;t think the interior materials were any worse than the MKiv but the style and colour geve the perception it was inferior.

You've had one whats your take?

J.

I thought the MKV interior was very good, its just that AUDI is that little bit better. We musnt forget though, that AUDI are are widely ackowledged in the motoring press as the best in the business, so its a tough comparison to make.
I also thought the MKIV was pretty good except for the awful soft touch stuff that used to peel off when it was touched, and the fake wood trim (not a problem in the 25th Anni & R32 of course)

my 2p anyway

I loved both my Mkiv's and didn;t mind the wood trim in my Gti although the ally stuff in my R32 was nicer.

Did the dash peel when you touched it?

J.

I had 2 GTi's and the Wife a Bora, never had an issue with the dash on those.

I think its generally accepted that VW set the benchmark with the mark4 and many others including Audi followed suit with many of the features. Must confess the Bora did have an annoying rattle from day one though.

Yep, the soft touch plastic areas had signs of wear tear when I bought it 2nd hand and just got progressively worse, just didnt find it very durable at all.
The fake wood cracked along the door card inserts too, my bro and another pal had exactly the same prob with these inserts also.

That said I still would have had the MK4 trim over the competiton, it had a nice solid feel which was missing from the Civic type r I replaced it with.
For me the MK5 raised the bar though, without a doubt.

Cheers
Paul

on the subject of annoying rattles (no not you N8KOW) My A3 has suffered the annoying rear parcel shelf bang over any mild bump, along with an annoying rattle behind the drivers air vent, something Audi claimed was to be expected as, and I quote "The interior of the car goes through a large temperature differential, which can cause rattles"

Very helpful
