Engine Warning Light 2 VAGCOM Errors 1.8T

My engine warning light came on today the car seems to be driving fine. Had the car hooked upto VAGCOM and it came back with 2 errors being,

-17705 Drop between Turbo and Throttle Valve-P1297 Check DV !
-17704 Error In Mapped Cooling System Temp Sensor -P1296

So it seems to be moaning about both the DV and Temp Sensor, had the errors cleared and they havent come back yet. If the Temp Sensor error was already there would it have set the engine Light off ? Im wondering if that was already there and infact the problem is the DV valve that set the engine light off, I cant see a link between the two but I dont really know enough.

Are the DV and temp sensor easy DIY to replace or best left to garage ?

I've had both. My Emissions Managment Control light came on when i got the temp sensor error but thats because i was probably overfuelling as a result of the faulty sensor. Cheap enough to replace. Think the green sensor is the newer one. (around £15-20 for the part - try vagparts)

The DV is again pretty striaghtforward to replace. just unclip the hose clips and replace with jubilees when fitting the new dv if not already done. (Around £20 a part). Never got any light for the 17705 error though.

Hoepfully its just straighforward replacements you need.

Soz one other question I wont be able to replace the part my car until next weekend, but I need to drive the car during the week, will I be doing any damage driving it with these faults ?

i've had the 17705 error come up recently. Resolved by tightening the jubilee clips around the DV. Worth trying before you spend any money.

I thought the DV had gpne aswell!!

the 17705 code could mean a number of things. A lot of folk get it with boost leaks, split vacuums or dirty/faulty throttle bodies. Worth tightening the dv clips fist tho as thats free i suppose!! u can also test the dv by taking it off andpushing up the diaphragm with ur finger or a pen and puting you finger on the top pipe. The diaphragm should stay up and then if u lift ur finger off and the diaphragm pings back down its working fine. If its already down then its split and u need a new one.

Depends on what the actual problem is! Me being paranoid i would just get them replaced to see if that fixes the prob! If ur temp sensor if faulty your car may be running at the wrong temp and therefore running too lean/rich creating further probs down the line. Should be ok short term - just dont hammer it!

Cheers guys, I checked out the a parts on VAG Parts and they were cheap £16 for the Temp Sensor and a bit more for the DV. Rang my local indie and they quoted me £90 to supply and fit temp sensor and £100 to fit and supply DV claimed they with the DV they need to set it up . Temp sensor looks easy enough, read that it will spill out alot of coolent is that true, is it just a simple matter of topping up after ? Regarding the DV I cant find it in the haynes manual do I need access to under the car to replace it ? Anyone got any link to 'how to replace the DV on 1.8T' ? Im sure I had seen one on the web somewhere but cant find it now.

The garage I spoke to though said it need setting up is that rubbish or can I just replace it ?

Anyone know how much coolent I will lose when swapping the temp sensor ? Is there a way to tell that I have topped it up enough.

I did my temp sender at the weekend. Just make sure the engine is cold when you change it and you won't lose any coolant! It's a 2 minute job and I'd never pay for a garage to do it!

Hi I've ordered the part but I cant seem to locate the temp sensor in the engine even after Ive looked at a few 'how to's' on the web. Mines a 2002 1.8T. The 'how to's' I have read say its between the engine block and the battery and airbox so facing the engine thats the right hand side, I removed engine cover and had a look but just couldnt see it. Does it push in side ways or downwards ?

I didn't have to remove the engine cover on mine. It was on the right of the engine block in the gap between the block and the air filter. I'd get you a photo but my car's in the bodyshop at the moment.

Cheers. So Im looking in the right area, how far down the engine block was it nearer the bottom or nearer the top, and did you have to push it in sideways < rather than downwards V. Soz for all the questions It must be obvious and Im just missing it

The sender is mounted vertically. Bear in mind he's taken the pics looking over the engine bay from the passenger-side wing.

Thanks 'themanthatcan' and 'davidhodgkinson' I had another look this morning and found the ****** . I could just about see the retaining clip with the engine cover on but to see it fully and to be able to remove it I needed to remove the second plastic bit of the engine cover (this is the black plastic bit that lhas a mesh bit on it)it was hiding under there. Maybe on the 1.8T 225 it sticks out more but on the bogo 1.8T its under the second bit of engine cover defo got to take that bit off to replace it.

Thanks for everyones help most appreciated saved me £80 , as I rang 3 garages one dealer and two indies and they all wanted £100 to fit a new temp sensor. Will do temp sensor first see if that fixes it if it doesnt will move onto the DV which I have managed to find :thumbsup:

Yeah me too i paid £16 and took 5 minutes, but you have to make sure you have the right o-ring!

Replaced it Saturday morning and yeah it was a 5min job car starts cleanly now and MPG seems better. My car is late 2002 model was supprised to find the orginal temp sensor was the dodgy black one.
