Is this a good idea? I rarely get chance to play games, and think the price of a standalone player is stupid!

I would also like to get a seperate Home Cinema kit, do these connect to the TV to allow me to use ot for the SKy and 360, or does it connect direct to the PS3?

Sorry for the dumb post, i'm a dinosaur when it comes to hi-fi etc, I have only just upgraded my gramaphone to a wireless!

Id highly recommend the PS3 as a bluray player... especially over a standalone box... mainly because its the only upgradeable player, so its the only PicInPic one I think, and a few other things it, and not others can do.

Get yourself the remote with it too and your all in.

If you rarely play games, then I wouldn't recommend a PS3 purely as a Blue-Ray player.
You can get the likes of a Samsung stand alone player for £200 now, from the likes of play.com and others.
A PS3 is more than that, plus you have to spend more on the DVD remote.
I don't know what Kontraband means by the PS3 being upgradeable.
If he means firmware updates/upgrades, then you can get them for stand alone players easily enough, if you want/need them.

yeah, I meant upgrading the fw mostly. The PS3 is the only player able to to this OTA. If someone is a dinosaur when it comes to bluray/technology, then I wouldnt want to coerce them thru downloading, burning, and upgrading the fw on a standalone when they could just turn on a system and click a button

On top of that though the PS3 HDD is upgradeable too.. its more than just a standalone player for sure, and should be used as such. It kinda creates more chances for you to game, so look out for a down time in something else if you go that way! ;)

Either way, I think its a good idea over a standalone as I said although I agree that its a waste to ONLY use it for bluray

I agree firmware upgrades are a bit of a pain.
Realistically though, your 'average' owner will simply never have the need to do it.
I've never bothered, because the firmware updates have always solved/added stuff that has never been an issue anyway.
We're on the same wavelength though, a PS3 is OTT as a player only.

Sony want you to buy the PS3 as a stand alone bluray player, thats why they are losing money on every unit, to get the thing into your house so you buy into the media where the big money is. TBH its about the only thing its good at, if I wanted a bluray player and the PS3 was the cheapest option then I would buy one over a standalone player for sure, I would never buy one for gaming though

I don't agree with the above.
Firstly, there is zero evidence to support your claim that Sony want you to buy the PS3 as a blu-ray player first.
That's nonsense, they are marketing it as a games console, with the added bonus of a blu-ray player.
Not a blu-ray player with the added bonus of a games console!

There does not need to be any evidence, just take a look around the shelves, but yes I worded that wrongly. Personally I wouldnt touch a PS3 as a games console, I would however buy one as a bluray player. Thats my opinion, PS3 fanboys will take offence, I am open minded with gaming but I am afraid the PS3 is serious, FAIL.

Im not as you know a fanboy (we've had this convo before) ;) but I dont know about the PS3 being a serious fail. Its already eliminated HD-DVD and when the developers catch up / Sony release the dev tools, the strength of game quality will be out and out the best. As a comparative console to the PSone, PS2 it didnt take off in any where near that scale, but that doesnt make it a fail. There is nothing else available on the market that can do what it does, so I guess thats why Sony felt it could charge a stupid amount of cash for it.

The PS3 didnt eliminate HD-DVD, Sony and their buying power did, good on them though thats fair enough, all is fair in love and war. If the PS3 was any good as a games console I would have bought one, I just dont think it is. I have seen games running on the PS3 and the 360 version and most of the time there is no difference, the difference is in the online capabilities, the cost of the games, the volume of games available and exclusives available of which other platforms beat it. The PS3 does have some things going for it though, bluray being one of them and GT5 being the other but IMO thats all.

I also need to add that the PS3 will never be the best gaming platform I am afraid! PC will always be the best gaming platform in terms of technology, nothing else comes close.

yeah, I agree with you on that... PC will be the best gaming platform... PS3 the best console.. but then we agree to disagree. :)

The quality of the game maybe the same at present on 360 as PS3 but as I said the full realisation isnt there for PS3. It may never turn up in all honesty, or turn up to late for Sony. They are sometimes backward in their forward thinking.

Catalogue isnt really an issue on PS3 as the back catalogue of PS2 is available to 60Gbers in addition to the current growing PS3 catalogue.

Online-wise Microsoft has got that pinned down well but its a focus for Sony so I wouldn't be surprised if it stole some ideas to match or try and better it.

I guess Sonys buying power in that it took the PS3 to market accounts for the loss of HD-DVD.

Haha, I still dont think the PS3 will ever be the best current console but then we could go on and on forever.
Even if the PS3 does get these magical new powers via new dev kits, will devs really put more time into the PS3 versions over the Xbox when under pressure from publishers for a simultanious release, doubtful. However this is why PC games are usually released later than the console versions, so the devs can use the extra time to make a PC version of the game and not just a ****** port like Kane & Lynch and Fall Of Liberty, man it makes me angry!!!!
Anyway, PS3 if you want one go for it, personally I have my PC for the FPS and eye candy, Xbox for console style games and I am very happy with that, currently playing Burnout Paradise and cant put it down!
What are you playing at the mo?

hahah yeah we could go on and on your right ;)
Clearly we are just gonna disagree though, and again as I didn't like Burnout paradise! :jester: I kinda liked where the first burnout was going, but didnt feel it had enough involvement to keep my interested.

I'm playing Unreal at the moment, and eagerly awaiting 29th Apr for GTA... (pre-ordered from Game at £39.99 and then found on Amazon for £34.99) and also looking forward to MGS after that.

Otherwise, Im fighting kids off from playing Lego Star Wars, playing Poker or PES2008.

lol we differ again, I am not a fan of unreal games!
Cant wait for GTA though, need to get mine pre-ordered, hoping for a poster or something. My religious views on Facebook just says "29.04.08" !!

hahah yeah, I thought we might! ;)

I saw Amazon USA were giving away a GTA license plate and case and stuff .... the one over here ist quite the same though with no plate but does have the bag and stuff in the special edition.

Hopefully the pre-orders will get something extra tho!

Mattfinn, you got your answer?? ;)

Haha, mate, looks like ive brought up an age old debate here lol!!

I dunno, I dont really need one as of yet, I bought a DVD player when they were not long out, and paid a fortune and was huuuge!

May just wait 6-12 months or so yet. Conserve some pennies as got some automotive stuff brewing!

PS - Is the HD v's Blu Ray over then, with Bliu Ray taking it??

Thanks for all the responses guys, as always, much appreciated!

:thrashi:

well... you could still get some bargains I guess, if you were that way inclined.

hi matt, just been reading through this post and thought i would add my 2p's worth.

i have just got a ps3 40gb completely free! yes thats right, didn't pay a penny! i needed a new phone/contract so decided to give dial-a-phone a whirl on one of their packages where you get a free phone, a new contract (i went for O2's 35, £35 a month, 600 mins, 500 texts) and a free ps3.

i must admit, i was a bit dubious whether the ps3 would actually turn up when i placed my order and you do have to wait about a month for the ps3 to arrive but it arrived this morning and everything is cushty...man, i love free stuff!!! :icon_thumright:

all the best, ian

yeah, there are quite a few of the 'free PS3' deals on phones at the moment...

that and wii deals... ive not heard of anyone not getting the console, but I often hear it taking an age to get to a customer.. like 2-3 months... how long did it take to get to you 1210??

I went for a Sony Blu ray player which IS upgradeable just download from sony and badda boom its upgraded.
I have an xbox which is why the stand alone suited me!

If you go for a phone package make sure you work out what the deal costs over the contract, I did and I could get the same deal without the "free" stuff a lot cheaper! which I could then use to buy my player

when i ordered my new phone & contract they told me it would be despatched within 30 days. my phone arrived next day and then the ps3 turned up within 3 weeks of the order date.
