Evening,

Just booked an Audi R8 experience in Leicester - £70 after a discount from Buy-a-Gift. Get 2 laps tutorial in a BMW D3 and then get to take the R8 out for 4 laps round the 2 mile circuit(can buy more laps on the day if wanted).

Anyone had a go in the R8 on here ?

Mark

Closest I got was sitting/drooling in one that was unlocked in Leeds Audi dealership. Had to wait about half an hour for service guy's to finish with my car so had a right good tyre kicking time lol

I've sat in one, does that count? Thought not.... Do you have further details of the R8 experience and how you managed a discount please?

My Dads driven his mates. Said it was brilliant, even more so than the RS4. Doubt I'll get to drive one myself

I was driving R8 on a race track Poznan, I've donne about 15 laps.
R8 is quite easy to drive, but after some laps i thought it could have more HP :)

R10? Is that the diesel? Personally i'm more excited about the RS8. Not sure what engine it'll have though. Maybe the 580bhp lump out of the new RS6? Maybe a tweaked version of the Gallardo engine? Who knows...

I thought I'd read that as well as the diesel variant they were going to drop the Petrol V10 into the R8 as well, thus creating the R10, maybe it's being rebadged as the RS8?

Don't they plan to drop the RS6 motor into the R8?

It's good... But not that good ;)

I didn't really mean in preference to the R8.
I could just see a 170 owner coming away from the day thinking;

"Ok, the R8 is the stuff of dreams...but that D3 is within my price range..."

:o.k:

Havent myself but my brother had his directors R8 for the day. It was the paddle/tiptronic version. He said that when you change down a gear it automatically blipp's the throttle to keep the revs up and makes a very deep growl. Class.

i've been fortunate enough to get to rag it around boxburg race track for three days last november! cone sections, race track, and high speed oval!!! THE perk of the job!

I’ve just booked myself on the Advanced Audi Driving Experience at Rockingham Circuit in June so I will have a go in the R8 then.

I'll be there on the Friday. Have to agree on the first course: really enjoyed it and learned stuff too.

Cheers,
Dan

I'm doing the course on Sunday 1st of June.
I enjoyed the first course, so I though I would give the advanced one a try.

I'm there on the 2nd, so please don't break the cars!!!!!!

Yes I've driven a R8 and been driven in one.
Going to get shot down of this but mixed feelings on it, yes its fast, its smaller than it feels - but didnt really want to take risks in friends new car ! It initally feels special and gets loads of attention, but I enjoy driving my old mans 997 much much more !

A week before I went on the first Audi course last year someone managed to trash a TT so they had to use one of the TT press cars instead.
When I was on the course one of the passengers threw up in a TT so it put that one out of action as well.

I still smarting from the fact I was slowest in the slalom test. So this time I’m going to be a bit more confident with my driving.

But don’t worry I don’t fancy putting a £80k car into a wall.

It would have to be 'very' good to convince me to go over to the dark side....

I chased an R8 around Castle Coombe last October. They had 2 tickets to win for 6 flying laps with an instructor - he drove the R8, winner was passenger. I was running new Revo new map and about 316bhp.

I was expecting to get absolutely dropped, and I also had a 90kg passenger on board so there was no chance I was going to stay anywhere near it. To my surprise, after it had done a couple of laps of warm up I was still about 4 car lengths behind. The instructor started to wind the throttle open and you could hear the V8 growling. By the end of the session (about 8 laps) he'd got a full start finish ahead of me.

Granted he may not have been trying that hard, but I expected him to absolutely lose me for dead at some point. Even when it was giving out the raucous V8 sound it was only pulling away gently. I can only guess he wasn't trying (we obviously were), but if thats all it has got to offer the V10 will be a refreshing arrival for petrol heads.

In Audi driver magazine where they cover the event our car is the grey S3 you can just see behind the pictured R8 in the contents pages.

Hi Mark - £70 is a great price (closest I can find is £99 from Buy-a-gift) did you haggle this discount or was it a special offer?

Cheers Tim.

I am a motoring journalist for a Scottish lifestyle magazine called Uptown and I reviewed the R8 just before Christmas. Got to say it is a very impressive car. Much preferred it to the Ferrari 360 Spider I was driving about in the week before. The R8 sounds amazing when you're watching it from outside, but the V8 is very subdued inside the cabin.

If any Scottish or Northern English members want to read the article you might still be able to catch the last issue in WH Smith etc., just before my latest feature on the VW Tiguan comes out.

Also, once you've read my review your good ladies will no doubt like the rest of the magazine.

Here's a sneek preview for you.

so was it faster than the Ferrari? I was expecting it to be much quicker on the track.

Both the Ferrari and R8 were driven on the public roads, but the R8 felt more torquey, it really did throw you back in your seat when accellerating hard, whereas the Ferrari was fast but didn't have the "punch" of the R8, that said the sound of the Ferrari was amazing.

When I did the Audi Driving Experience a couple of years back it was just before the S3 was announced and the instructors had been acting as test drivers for the S3. One of them told me he was chasing an RS4 round the track in an S3 and keeping up fine, so I am not that surprised that you could keep up with the R8.

Cheers
