Hi all,

Looking to use my iPod Touch in the car and wondered if anyone had any experience of the RoadTrip device from Griffin ?http://www.griffintechnology.com/products/roadtrip

Need something that also charges at the same time - and I don't have an Aux connection in the car. Pretty much ruled out the Audi iPod kit as it has limited flexibilty in terms of tracks etc.

Am interested in hearing any feedback on the quality of the FM transmission and if you have used this product, given the location of the ciggie lighter on the A3, whether it is suitable and doesn't get in the way of the handbrake/gearstick.

Thanks

Mark

FM transmitters are ok for a quick fix but the quality is not great all the time. If you go into an area with the same signal you get interferance.

I would go for the dension kit

Ill put a link up later

Thanks but aren't they around £150 ish - the Roadtrip is £35 and is nearer to my budget.

Does the Dension allow full access to all songs on the iPod ?

Also the last time I looked a while ago they didn't have anything compatible with the iPod Touch ?

The FM transmitters are ok as a temporary solution but they are not great, the signal is often weak. Plus depending where you are driving you will need to retune them as well.

They are ok as a quick and dirty solution but not ideal!

You're right, I have an i-touch too.
Dension's website is shocking, so I emailed them
They are planning to add the i-touch, 'sometime soon'.
I've just ordered a Griffin product that allows me to connect my i-touch to the aux socket, whilst charging it at the same time.
Can't help you with the FM thing, sorry.

Yes the dension allows full control

does the ipod touch have the port on the bottom which is the same as the video, nano etc if so the dension dock cable may work

It does but it runs a new operating system which stops most of the old accessories from working

i've got a fair few ipods, all work with my dension apart from the touch :(

Thanks for the replies everyone - took the plunge anyway and ordered the new 2008 model Roadtrip - apparently the smartscan technology has improved the reception quality significantly over the previous models.

I'll let you know how I get on and post some pics of it working with the Touch for anyone interested.

I've got a griffin road trip and it works quite well for a 35 quid product..The only annoying thing is that it's quite bulky and to some degree get's in the way of changing gear due to the position of the cigarette lighter..Obviously you can twist it around to reduce the annoyance factor and it's not bad for a quick fix but I'd certainly go for a more permanent solution when funds allow.... :)

This is what I've ordered, to get my i-touch into the aux socket.
As far as I can make out, I should be able to connect from dock to aux.
I'm not encouraged by the fact the picture clearly shows a headphone out to aux cable though.
I don't ****** want a headphone to aux connection!
Time will tell, Amazon are taking their time delivering it.

I have tried at least 3 FM transmitters from Belin to Sony and all of them are crap. I have settled with Denison for my I Pod Nano and it works like a charm. Sorry cant give you any advise on the I pod touch though but STAY AWAY FROM FM TRANSMITTERS!! :)

Stand back everyone bowfer is buying something he hasn,t checked out properly again, toys will be ejected from prams if its not 100% perfect for him. :moa:

ps. The cable gives a true aux out not headphones:music:

Update.
The Griffin thing I ordered was crap.
Loads of crackling.
It's gone back.
Looks like back to CD's for me, until I can get a Dension sorted out.

I've just ordered the Zoom iHiFi Bluetooth adaptor for my Touch essentially to play through the home AV amp but the additional benefit is that it will then connect to the Alpine HU via Bluetooth. My N95 does the same thing and works very well.

I have just tried my cousins ipod touch and it works a treat on the dension kit which i have in my A3.

The dension kit has two modes
1. similar to the audi lead, it locks the ipod
2. You get full control of the ipod, but you can use the "skip to next track button" on the headunit to change to the next track on the album or playlist, you can also fastforward.

It allows full contol of the ipod and charges it. It fits in the cradle ( not 100% as its thinner but does not move about) or use the dock cable and leave in glove box or ashtray.

Dension probably want to charge extra for the cradle for the touch

Well I received the Roadtrip device and I am actually quite impressed with it !

Absolute doddle to configure and when playing I get very little hissing or other interference - the only slight issue is the position of the device due to the 12V socket location.

In terms of £35-40 I think it's a great buy - might be different if you do lot's of travelling and are continually having to retune but my experience has been fine.

I have some photos on my phone - i'll post them later.

that would be helpful. Like you i dont have an aux connection in the car, and i am not prepared to pay audi to fit the ipod connection for me, so what you have done sounds good to me.

any description on the process you went through would be helpful.

That's interesting, as Dension themselves don't seem to think any of their products work with the i-touch, yet..:uhm:
I've emailed them...............again.................

mine doesn't work, even with the latest software installed, very odd

Some pictures as promised - sorry for the delay !

As you can see it is just about workable - it doesn't get in the way of the gear change and once you have selected the album or playlist you can switch the display off so it's not distracting.

If you need any more info drop me a line.
