H&R 35mm & 19"

Just thought i would show you a few pictures of my car.
I was searching for ages to find how my car would look with different setups so hopefully this may help someone else decide.

I have 35mm drop H&R springs with 8.5j * 19" ET48 rims with 235-35-19 Tyres

Yes it did rub on back straight away, seen other posts about removing screw under arch so that has been removed and replaced with smaller screw but have not tested yet
 
Just doing the maths

Offset of 48 (std on S3 is 54) thats difference of 6mm +1/2 j (8.5j against std 8j) 12.5mm + 6mm= 18.5mm further out than std + 235 tyres which are about right for 8.5 rim width.
Most wheel sellers quote for 19" wheels an offset of 43mm,45mm,47mm most also quote 235 tyres although I have seen 215 offered (stretched look)
Would be interesting to get some consistant figures on what fits without rubbing.
Thats also without taking in the effect of lowering (In theory lowering with uprated shocks and uprated anti roll bars will reduce body roll etc so possibly help to reduce rubbing issues).
But lowering with springs on their own should make it worse.
So would be very interested in your rubbing issues if any.
Might be worth making a sticky of std offsets for various wheels and models and a list of what wheel/tyre combinations people have fitted and any rubbing issues.
 
On the A3 we have always stuck with a 225/35/19, I have that size on my 3 door on 8J with at ET50 and I never have any rubbing, plus it has been lowered 30mm. The original offset for the 7.5x18s is 56mm, so with the 8.5 and ET48 there will be 5mm less clearance on the inside.

So its always best to keep as near as possible to oe offset,
7.5x18 is 56mm
8.5 x19 et 48mm
Correct me if im wrong (getting old here so memory not as good as it used to be)
48mm as opposed to 56mm will mean the wheel will sit out (away from the suspension leg) by the difference ie 8mm (offset is measured from the wheel mounting flange/face)
The different in wheels width in this case (7.5j/8.5j sure 1j= 25mm)
So therefore 1j wider 25mm + 8mm = 8mm further out from the suspension leg than the OE wheel (or outside edge of rim 33mm nearer the arch lip)

Or have I got it all wrong?

Surely if the rim is an 8.5j instead of a 7.5j, that's a difference of 25mm overall. That would make it 12.5mm either way from the centre of the wheel so the effect on the offset would be 20.5mm (12.5mm + 8mm)

Both sets of my genuine A3 rims are 7.5j x ET54 offsets. I think the ET48 offset originates from the A6, I maybe wrong though.
 
yes indeed from the A6

Standard 7.5J ET56

8.5J * 19 ET48 = 5mm closer to inner arch and 21mm closer to outer arch
8.5J * 19 ET43 = same distance to inner arch and 26mm closer to outer arch

Maars isn't gonna be happy, your A3s look identical now! Looking nice though, can't wait to get my 19"s on now. With ET45 I don't reckon I'm gonna need spacers. Where in the south west are you based?
 
Very nice. I would love some 19" BBS CH Black Editions with a similar drop on mine. Just remembering how unforgiving the ride was on a previous modified car puts me off though!

What is the ride like....?

The ride was better with the H&R fitted with standard rims. Now the 19" are fitted it is harder for sure but not as bad as i expected. Will report further once i have done a long run.

I spoke with Maars about 3 weeks ago and he is cool with it.

I am in Bristol.
 
Excellent rabs, thats where I'm from. What part of bristol, when I come down in may, we'll have to meet up! Car is looking very nice though....nice to see more people on this forum going down the 19" route...

The 235s look better as on mine the rim sits proud of the tyre so the tyre offers zero protection from kerbing. But the rolling diameter is correct with 225s - ok it's 1.5% out with 235s but I wanted to get the closest match to the outgoing 18s I had on.

Loving the H&Rs too, and the 19s :thumbsup:
 
Glad to see you read my message! 1.5% isn't really alot though is it James? U need to take some better pictures and clean it properly!!!

235s here we come..
 
Been on a few good runs this weekend and the wheels do not rub at all....Happy Days

do you have to do a drop when changing to the 19s?
