To avoid hijacking the '170' thread further ;-)
How the hell have BMW managed 204bhp with a Co2 of 138g/km !?
Is that correct ????

twin turbo efficient dynamics, engine switches off at traffic lights etc, first 2.0d in the world with 100bhp per tonne, just think it was'nt that long ago that the sierra cisworth had 204bhp.

Think you mean 100bhp per litre :)

It can have all the power in the world, it's still pig-ugly.

yep,sorry 100 bhp per litre.

in terms of looks,im split ya know, horrid from the front and back but i realy like the side profile,i dont like the 1 series interior either though

Inside is cheap, plasticy and clinical. Outside looks like a shoe.

Its looks are growing on me - think I will try a 120d at the weekend if I can. Will let you know what it's like.

BMW are kicking Audi's a*se with their engine range at the moment. Audi have a lot catching up to do. Don't get me wrong, I love Audi's, however when its time for me to change it will become more difficult to justify an Audi over a BMW if the current gap continues.

It's the engine I'm interested in,not specifically the 1 series.
I'm assuming they'll fit it to the 3 series.
Mind you,the 123D is £25K !
So the 323D is going to be £30K,easy.

my thoughts exactly. Can't make my mind up without the looks though, but that engine is a cracker.

Makes the 143bhp diesel of the new A4 look very weak indeed.
Definitely an 'entry level' engine,as with the 143bhp 318D,but do Audi have some stronger diesels in the wings ?
Much better range on the 1 or 3 series.
143,177 or 207 bhp.
All with very low Co2 as well.

I agree with most of the comments here, BMW are indeed making some cracking engines at the moment especially diesels but the 1 series looks ***** and the 3 series is very bland. They have the same problem with their newish(2005 K series motorbikes) I had a test ride on a K 1200 R last year and was well impressed with engine and handling but the bike looks like something off scrapheap challenge.Might try an R sport next year as they dont look too bad it has same engine as 1200 R.

Whereas Audi are well known for their avant-garde styling..
Come on,everyone on here is driving an A3.
I don't think we've the right to call another car bland.
It's like Jim Davidson calling Bernard Manning racist.

Just my personal opinion bowfer, dont know if you saw top gear a month or two ago Clarkson and the hampster thought that little of the current 3 series they just chucked the picture of it on the floor couldn't even be bothered to put it on the cool wall.

FWIW,I agree with you.
I think the 3 series is a bit bland.
But I think the A3 is just as bland.
The new A4 is bland too.
So is the Lexus.
So is the Accord.
So is the Merc C class.
The only 'unbland' (is that a word?) 4 door saloon in the medium-exec class is the 159,IMO.
Much as I want one of them, the fact the nearest dealer is 90 miles away is a worry.
So my choice appears to be a 'blandmobile' of one type or another.
That's just the styling though,thankfully.
I can't see a 207bhp 3 series being bland to drive,can you ?

No I can't as I said no complaints about engines you never know I might get that K 1200 R sport fantastic engine.

That new diesel engine will be a corker for the 1 series but not at all sure about the 3. As bowfer says, it's going to be £30k basic before you add toys and frankly I'd expect a 6-pot diesel for that money, no matter how clever the 4-pot is.

Get the damn Alfa :)

One of my work colleagues has a 120d M-Sport as a company motor and let me have it one evening. I had a good 40mile run in it. Got to say the engine is great - it drives a bit like a petrol, i.e. it likes the high revs. He's got the 'older' 168bhp engine, but even so, the engine was superb.

For me with 2 kids it was a non-starter though as the rear leg room was very cramped and the boot was pretty small.

The spec is pretty basic as well - he had to pay extra for the essential cup holder :)!

Tried the 123d last weekend. That engine is truely a belter. The power on tap in untrue, if only I could live with the looks!!!!! I feel like buying one, if only for the engine!!!!!!!!!!!

witha new job and car allowance we're thining of getting a 120d Msport
sorry but it's the truth

not exactly a good looking car but engine and driving are just as important.

i really like the stance the M sport has wider rear end ( like a wed fed lass)
Half leather, black headlining, superior handling and better mpg than the 2.0 tdi DSG

no denying the A3 is a pretty car

I've said it before I quite like the new 1 series coupe, but it does have to be in the right colour. Black and in M sport spedc I think it looks really nice. I've also seen a white one as well that I liked.

Could you live with the interior though ? all a bit bland for my tastes, I sat in a M sport I think( or Whatever model ) and found it hard to fit in those seats and I am only 11.5 stone so anyone who is on the large side has got no chance.

My colleague has a black 123D coupe.
He's a good 6'2 and 15 stone.
No problems there.
I'm 6' dead and 14 stone, no problems either.
My only 'gripe' with the 123D coupe is it's external size.
I just can't get my head around the fact it reminds me of a Japanese micro car.

I don't mind the BM interiors, I'll agree they aren't as glitzy as Audi's, but still not a bad place to be (IMHO of course)

I know - but KRLs comment was a generic one (or read that way).

I know - but KRLs comment was a generic one (or read that way).

Given that the thread is about diesel engines, I don't think it was necessary for KRL to specifically mention the word 'diesel'.

I was reading the thread from the start - at the point I reached KRL's post NOBODY had mentioned the word diesel so it wasn't clear to me that it was a diesel exclusive thread. There was a "d" in your original thread title but I'm too daft to see the exclusivity clause in that.

I had the E87 before this car... loved it... cracking drive, and looked ok... cept the **** end... that was rubbish. Smaller than my S3 tho surprisingly

Audi need to develop a TT Diesel as well...

The TT Diesels from BMW give out awesome amounts of power, especially when remapped....

The 123D is a twin turbo Diesel, as well as the 335D.

The 335d remapped can give up to 330-340bhp and around 550lbft torque!
That's an extra 100lb ft torque and around 40-60 bhp from just a remap.

If it had a stronger transmission that car could be very powerful and put a lot of "supercars" to shame.

If the transmission allowed it, over 600lbft Torque would be easily achievable with just a map...

I get to make a direct comparison between BMW's Twin turbo diesel and my single turbo, as I have a D3 and my colleague has a 123D.
His 123D has around 204bhp.
My D3 has around 200bhp.
Once spinning, there's little discernable difference between his and mine.
Where he scores is the lack of lag.
His just picks up from low revs quickly and neatly, where mine has a delay.
Inevitable, with a large single turbo.
