Strange suspension problem

Just get underneath and check everything for damage and movement. Had the same problem with my Subaru b4, turned out to be a lower control arm bushing

its what happened to tuffty's S3 - ref Propshaft mid CV - he only found his running the car on a ramp

Update - I just got back from the garage and the guy said it’s 100% my passenger driveshaft.. lots of play.. also the driver side had a bit of play so I’m best of doing both at the same time..
Quick question though, I’m trying to find one in a breakers yard.. do 1.4 golfs driveshaft fit 1.8t?

I’m not 100% but I think it’s only the S3 TT and A3 Quattro that share the same drive shafts.
Tuffty has done a great guide on removing the driveshaft a replacing the gaiters, here:

Don’t forget to replace hub nuts too.

don't buy second hand ones - unless they are mine (8 months old) :) - only joking they are still on my car.

I bought a pair for under £90 and they were fitted for about 2 or 3 hours labour.

doesn't look like S3 and A3 are the same to me?

I only say that because they are cheaper, isn't it to do with the 6 speed gearbox versus the 5 speed gearbox?

Ah yea of course that would make sense. Probably then. The same would apply with golfs then as their 5 speed.

I have bought a pair for £70 I’m replacing both as both need doing apparently

Does anyone know a good place to get the hub nuts from? Audi want £27 for 2nuts...

I’m attempting to replace both shafts on Thursday.. seems fairly straight forward
Any tips or advice?

mark anything that might affect the alignment and make sure any cap heads are clean all the way down to make sure they are not rounded or turned out undoing them.

I paid a man to do mine my concern was trying to knock the lower ball joint out and ensuring the lower wish bone was put back into the same place.

£70 for two new Drive Shafts is pretty cheap where did you get them from?

I’m not too worried about the alignment as I’ll get the tracking done a day or 2 after.. also I didn’t buy new ones as I didn’t see your post until it was to late.. but I think they’re reconditioned.

Follow tufftys how-to I linked earlier. Also make sure you have the correct “spline bit”. It’s like a torx but but has 12 splines instead of 6, a mistake I made when I did mine. I removed the ball joint from the hub instead of the wishbone to minimise changes to wheel alignment. Just need a crow foot spanner and Alan key. Make sure you torque the hub but properly.
It might be worth replacing wishbone bushes as your there too.
Cheap polyurethane bushes can be found here:

Try tightening the wheel nuts. Is it worse round corners?

Update: car is now in a much better state.. no more wobbling.. upon inspection of the passenger driveshaft/CV as I removed it.. it fell to pieces.. but I still have a minor issue of what sounds like a wheel bearing noise only happens at 20-30mph then goes at 40mph

I was thinking as I removed ball joint and arb link maybe I’ve messed up the alignment causing tires to rub ??

They would rub not matter what speed your doing though. Does the noise change with steering angle?

I’m getting an alignment tomorrow so hopefully cures it
