Can anyone please help me? A4 TDI 170 on a 07 plate

I have an intermittent problem.. I get in the car and the engine turns over and over but will not start?? Ive noticed that when this happens the heater coil light does not come on at all?!
After a while it can be 2mins to 10 mins of takin key in and out and locking and un locking car, all of a sudden the heater coil light comes back and boom it starts.. also doesnt miss a beat once its started?? its got me beat tho...

It shows no fault codes either!

Any help would be appreciated!

possible cam shaft position sensor, they are well sensative on this engines. although far as im aware they arnt linked to glow plug light???

This issue used to haunt TDIs about 10 years ago. The problem then was the main ecu relay (provides power to the ecu) failed and didn't power up the ecu. A lack of glow plug light was always a giveaway. It was relay 109 which was faulty back then (on the Mk4 Golf platform etc.) but I'm not sure which relay it would be now.

Thanks for the replys guys! it was fine for about 2 weeks then last night it did it again, so i lifted the bonnet and slapped the top of the ecu and it fired up straight away!!!
so i think your right its deffo a relay problem or worst case a ecu problem..

gettin a bit ****** off with it now it seems to be problem after problem, not bad to say i paid 25.5k new for a so called prestige car.....

Have you sorted this, A mate has the same problem.

if its definatlly resolving the issue tapping the ecu you need to get it opened and examined and any dry joints reflowed etc, its not as uncommon as you think, i done a volvo dashboard the other day that had some dry joints

i use my gas iron on a low setting, it can melt solder ina few secs so i just wave it over most joints chips etc normally resolves it, bit like the old vauxhall edu units.

its deffo the ecu relay. i even went in behind the fuse panel and wiggled all the relays and its not done it for about a month now.
just need to find which relay it is cuz audi aint interested in helping me. im still gonna change it, tho im gonna go down to audi so they cant fob me off.

I'm having the exact same problem as yourself - did you manage to solve the issue in the end?

Any update on this one?

My car is a 56 A4 1.9tdi SE and is doing exactly the same thing...intermittent no glow plug light on dash and the car won't start. The only error code is 01314 (no communication). Slapped the plastic cover on the ecu box as the guy said above and it works!!

Do I change a relay? Which one? I am a total novice by the way.

Please help, it's seriously doing my head in now! Please!!!!

i have an audi a4 tid sline 170 on a 56 plate, had the same problem about a month ago i changed the relay under the ecu under bonnet, was a grey relay think the number was 614 but will check for defo on old 1 tomoz, was a bit fiddley to get the cover off ecu but not to bad.relay cost 26 quid form tps and was a little bigger than original but touch wood since i changed it it been ok,the relay was for fuel pump/main power relay for ecu, hope this helps

Mike81, thanks very much for you help/ advice. Ill get the relay swapped at the weekend. It's taken months for me to get the right answer to this fault, you wouldn't believe what so called "experts" at a couple of garages wanted to replace to fix this! Hopefully anyone else with the same issue will see this thread and won't have to fork out what I have over the last couple of months. If you can remember the relay number that would be great. Thanks again.

i dont know if this will help but i had a very similar issue with my petrol b5, it was the key reader around the ignition barrel that made the immobiliser not turn off, dont know if this helps but it sounded very much the same

morning all,

Ive just signed up as I am having the exact same problem with a 2006 A4 tdi 140. It does it to mine once or twice a month, including today when its snowing heavily.....

Has anyone got any further info on what this problem could be, ive not yet slapped the ecu, to try that as I had to go to work in MS's car.

Is the ecu relay 614 and is it worth swapping it.

Ive had the car towed to a garage but it started first time when it was there.. grrrrr

I swapped the 614 relay and that fixed the problem. It's never happened since. The replacement relay is slightly larger so don't panic when you see the size difference. A bit awkward to fit as its underneath the ecu. I think it cost me £16 for the relay.

Forgot to add, you'll notice the pins on the old relay are burnt. I gather it was a design fault hence the replacement is larger.

thanks for the reply, ive ordered one that isbeing delivered tomorrow, when i got home tonight, it would still not start, i popped the bottom and tapped the ecu case a few times with my keys, and it started up first time. Maybe there is a loose relay somewhere inside but with 7" of snow on the ground and having ordered the part (15 pounds) ill just swap it.

Just had this happen on my 05 sline diesel and replaced all 4 glow plugs. Work intermittent and then failed again tonight. A A not sure what problem is but I'm pinning my hopes on the new relay 614 which arrives Tuesday. Fingers crossed and any help appreciated please

Did it get sorted with 614 replacement?

Yes on order for delivery Tuesday, fingers crossed this does the trick as really uncomfortable using the car at moment. Seems to only do it when Car us warm as well as turned over find first thing last two mornings.

Hope it sorts it, in the meantime tapping the box that holds the relay got mine started a couple of times when it was playing up.

Holds the fuse or relay?

I'll try latEr as a a man did try thus Saturday no luck,

Then Sunday morning bang starts first time,

Frustrating, com

Apologies, I meant the relay in the scuttle panel.. I know what you mean, I got the aa out and it started first time when he tried it!

Had the relay out several times saturday night

Cleaned it it looks ok but as seem to think it has every chance of being faulty.

So hope it gets the job done as car has been a beauty,..

Well changed the relay 614 - upgraded now to a 644 by Audi as been superseded.
Still get the intermittent glow plug light issue but pop the bonnet and tap the ecu and I usually get her started.
Not sure where to go now :(

Hello, I have exactly this problem with my 07 2.0 TDI A4 Cabriolet. I went through hell trying to get this fixed, just about all relays that I can find have either been changed or swopped (and the fuel pickup pump in the tanks). The RAC have been out to fix / recover the car a few times - new battery at one stage (which seemed to help a bit). Once when it would not start in frustration I slapped the ECU (with the ignition on) and hey presto there was a few clicks and whirs and then she started on the key. The non starting issue is still present intermittently but she starts with a tap on the ECU. I had previously got it going by turning the key whilst squirting Easystart into the Turbo intake (it sometimes took quite a lot of easystart but would run eventually).

I will get the ECU out and take a look for dodgy connections / dry joints shortly and post my findings. R.

I had a starting problem on my 3.0tdi B7 , turned out to be the earth wire from the ECU that bolts to the bulkhead just above the battery was loose.

Hi all.
New to the audi side of things and already in need of help. Had the same sorta symptoms as the rest of you yesterday evening, where car shuddered while driving and battery and glowplug symbol flashed and then went. Further down the road car then just cut out and nothing.
AA came out and we found that it was my main relay. What I'm trying to find is does my car have one? And where?
My vehicle is a Audi A4 2.0 tdi s-line 56 plate. Also where is my ecu located?
Thabks for any help given.

Hello, further to my earlier posting I decided to take a look, once I got access to the ECU (which was not easy), I checked connections which looked OK. I lifted out the ECU, still connected and found 3 relays under it (the holy grail). I changed all 3 relays (one is called a control box and was more expensive that the other 2). I had to take the relays to Audi parts department as they could not readily find them on their parts system. I have not had a problem since (6 months).

For info I knew it was not going to start when the coil light did not come on when turning on the ignition.

I keep a few cans of EasyStart in the boot just in case!

Hope that helps. I can send pictures of ECU location in my car.

Cheers

Hi All,

Just come across this thread trying to solve the starting problem on my Son's A4 B5 facelift. It has exactly the same symptoms as the others, will not start unless the glow plug light is seem. I've replaced the relays, but it still takes ages (or longer) of turning the key before it will start and it's getting worse. Has anyone here got any other ideas and does anyone know the starting logic is what sequence has to happen to get the glow plug light to light up and get it started?

Thanks in advance for any help!

This could be useful been having problems with my b7 not starting after an engine swap this is somewhere I need to check incase ive been barking up the wrong tree. When the glow plug light wasnt on did vag com still show live data?

I'd be interested to see your pictures. I'm having the same issue.

Had exactly the same problem with my Audi A4 Cabriolet 2007. Happened only twice in last three months but yesterday happened on three separate occasions throughout the day. Thank god for this thread, opened up the bonnet and gave the ECU cover a good slap, and it started first time no problems and several times after that. Will take it in to garage and have relays looked at.
Thank you all

Don't let them rip you off. The relay is not very expensive. I purchased this one for my Q7 a few months ago and it worked great.

Took me about 4 minutes to replace.

Can anyone help me with relay 614 location for a A3 2.0tdi, bkd engine ? I took the ecu out but is nothing under.
