Using Apple Maps with AMI

Found a really interesting feature in my friends BMW 3 Series (2012 Model) today.
When connected to his phone (iPhone via bluetooth) and he is using navigation apps like Apple Maps the voice is played through his car sound system even if music is playing through the system (via local media or the phone). When a direction is said aloud the music volume drops and the direction is given and then simply reverts back to the previous media. On his system it appears as if someone has called him when the directions are spoken.

I wanted to know if something like this is possible using the AMI system? I know if your playing music via bluetooth (on iPhone) and then have sat-nav running it will speak through the sound system but is this possible when your playing local media? i.e. iPod or SD card?

I was using Google Maps on the iPhone (via Bluetooth) and the directions were coming through the sound system. It was rather annoying because I'd rather listen to the music!

Not too sure what you need to do to get it to work but it is possible.

Not tried it with the audi but I should think if you connect your iPhone via bluetooth for music instead of plugging it into the AMI, start your music playing on the phone and run the satnav app of your choice it should work.

At least that's how I used it on my old car

This works fine in my A1 not tried it with apple maps though will try latter.
I use the Navigon sat nav app and its a feature you can turn on and off.
it can be a bit of a pain if you are trying to listen to a track but have lots of directions being spoken

Yes I can confirm this does work, but its not quite what I want.
I want to be able play music from another source to the satnav directions

With navigon you can listen to any source, it just cuts in as if you are on a mobile call and switches back at the end of the instruction.

I used this for Google maps on my Android and worked through the speakers of the bluetooth

Is this the case with any other satnav app?
I've tried tomtom, apple maps and google maps, none of work through the Bluetooth without switching to the mobile as the source.

I've downloaded navigon and tested, it doesn't work through speakers either (when not using iPhone as music source)

This is a function of the iPhone, it works the same way in the Civic

Sorry for the necro-thread bump, but I'm hoping this may help someone in the future:

On our 2016 A3 (without Nav) it will give audio prompts through the Audi MMI stereo system. You'll need to go into the settings of each navigation app you use and adjust the settings (within the app) to route navigation audio through Bluetooth. Then, when listening through any source - or even on a phone call - the nav audio will be heard through the vehicle speakers.

We tested this last night, using Google Maps, Apple Maps, and Navigon.

Awesome. just seen the option on GoogleMaps. I take it you mean " Play as a Bluetooth call"? i use googlemaps and bought the iPhone TomTom app and this was one major major downfall for me. i couldnt listen tot he radio without hearing the alerts when bluetooth was connected. The MMI had to be on Media setting to hear Googlemaps directions. Im hoping this solves it.

^ yes - this should solve it.

We tested listening to FM, SiriusXM, and while on a phone call. Audio came through nice and clear. I'm thinking with a mount (like Carl's between the vent mount) where we can see the phone screen, this is an effective solution for those without factory navigation. In fact, using Apple Maps or Google Maps, one can select a destination by voice, while in motion. I don't believe stock navigation allows in-motion address entry.


I recall there are two settings, visible when your phone is connected to your Audi. Select a destination, then "go" to start navigation. Swipe up (IIRC) from bottom of screen, go to settings, select audio through Bluetooth. I also turned on "play as call". This is for Google Maps.

For Apple Maps it's similar, in settings. Also turn on HFP prompts. Again, these settings are visible when connected via Bluetooth.

For NAVIGON, it's in the settings menu. Audio through Bluetooth.

It might. Check the settings menu of the app, when connected to the car via Bluetooth. Some apps only show the connection/audio routing menu when there are more than one potential source for output.

If you want a good navigation app where there maps are stored locally (on the phone), I've used Navigon for years and love it.
