How to prevent MMI screen from coming up ?

Hello,

I've had my A3 1.6tdi "Ambition" Monsoon grey for a week now. Having driven the first A3 model for 15 years it's both very different and like putting on a pair of comfy old shoes !!

My question is in the title…. is there a way to prevent the MMI screen from coming up every time I with the engine on ? With the vocal commands (which work amazingly well !!) and the steering wheel controls I would only really need the screen for navigation.

Only by turning the MMI off, but then you lose media, bluetooth and nav functions

A long press on the smaller knob on the centre console will turn the whole thing off and lower the screen. At the next ignition start the screen will stay down but everything is turned off. Now if this action could be made not to turn things off and remember the last source, then that would be good.

A short press of this knob merely mutes the sound until it is pressed again, similar to pressing the small thumb wheel on the steering wheel.

I must admit I would quite like it if the long press on the small knob switched everything off so that when I pressed menu to change some settings the radio/media player did not start playing again. I know I can press the button to mute the sound or turn the volume down but it seems strange to me that an off button does not turn the system off such that if I want the radio or media player I click the appropriate switch.

To me it's no hassle, you turn the ignition on you press the button the screen goes away

To be honest, Lee's point is valid - the popup screen is probably the most dominant feature of the interior - if people dislike it so much, why didn't you buy a different car?

I have mine up all the time and only lower it if I'm driving in rural areas late at night and want the absolute minimum light level inside the car.

I am mistaken, just tried it in mine and it does indeed stay switched off / down after a restart if you long press the power button. I swear it never used to, but there we go lol.

The screen is the most dominate feature it controls the car systems media etc etc, if you want it down constantly everything is off if you want systems on you're going to have to live with pressing the button to lower it, I'm rly not been clever headed but if pressing a button to lower it annoys you then the next few years of ownership aren't going to be very enjoyable.

And yes in my house it's very fun thank you I have a 15 month old that amuses me daily and a wife that's even funnier, if you wish to stop round for tea and biscuits one day feel free

I personally prefer my screen to be down 90% of the time. When I turn the ignition on it is down and stays down until I want to use it, which is very rare. It pops up when I engage reverse and shows the camera view which is obviously good and then when I drive forward it goes down and stays down. There is no way I want a screen the size of the one on the A3 visible on the top of my dash all the time.

I bought my 2015 S3 about a year ago and if I could change only one thing about it, it would be the screen. It is a pain in the *** to reach over and click that button every time I start it up. And, I wonder if I should be concerned about that little motor wearing out over the long term. It would be really nice if the screen only came up when I pressed the button...

If anybody knows a way, I would like to hear about it. At this point, I'm even willing to spend a little money to "fix" it...

To me, it is distracting and a visual obstruction. It is quickly becoming a pet peeve...

Fair enough mate. Assuming you're not 4 foot tall though it's below the bottom of the windscreen from your eyeline?

You do know you knock the brightness back?

Won't it come back up regardless of what you set it to, once you throw the car into reverse which activates the Parking System Plus? I haven't tried disabling the MMI pop-up on my 8V.

But I thought I read somewhere that it's designed that way due to law that the rear camera view must always be shown when in reverse. It's also a reason Audi fixed this on the new Q3, A4, and probably any new model that will have the mounted MMI, where they won't recline and hide they will be at a fixed position.
