quicker than a type r???

My old JRSC EP3 Type R was quicker than my stage 2+ S3 above 70-80 but trying to put the power down in 1st 2nd 3rd in anything but perfect conditions was a nightmare. Real world the S3 is way better, this is the first 4wd car i have owned, and it would be hard to go back to RWD or FWD now.

This sounds extremely weird given the mid range ability of stage 2+.... and given the EP3's figures...... even in perfect cond a standard EP3 would not stand a chance from start against a stage 1 8P - can you explain how this could be?

A ctr with a super charger strapped to it is a different ball game...

Some figures:

Mk1 EK9 182hp 1050kg 173bhp/ton

EK9`s were also very down on power compared to the figure Honda gave. According to a lot of people its a rare thing to find one that actually made that power even years ago when the car wasnt as old and would have lost asmuch through age. Even modded ones with slight mapping have made that or just over.

Just to throw in some useless information lol

No matter what figures a civic puts out I'd still have an Audi S3 any day !! And have been considering changing but I just cant let my A4 TQS go :)

I would have thaught having to drive a car screeming its nuts off all the time would get very tiresome.

I read the other day that the Audi A1 1.4 TFSI Petrol has a supercharger and a turbo charger and gets from 0-60 in 6.9s with a combined book mpg of 38 mpg, i was quite impressed

Not the a1, the s1 that isn't out yet, has the same engine as the Ibiza cupra and polo gti, 180hp. I've been looking at these cars with a friend last week, The top spec a1 is only turbo 1.4 and as 122ps. My mate chose the polo gti in the end. S-tronic as standard.

I was talking to a firm just yesterday about this, apparently if its not the new 7 speed S tronic/DSG which carries the torque through the gearbox better, then your stuffed if your looking for big figures - because the coding for these boxes hasnt been cracked yet, the 6 speed which is still being used (on the 8P S3 and proabbly others) slips when the torque hits and hesitates before changes because it doesnt know to expect the torque

id guess the polo would be the later box but you never know

It does!! I had a Civic 1.8VTi 5 door and it was like a wolf in sheeps clothing as they say but when you wanted to go fast your passengers (especially girlfriends) think you've gone mental revving upto 8k+!!

What you mean about the gearbox slips when the torque hits and hesitates Tim....

As said, EK9 is a true Type R.

The JDM EP3's are a 'true' Type R in my opinion as they have an LSD and other goodies, but the UK ones are just not worthy of the hallowed badge.

Given the choice between my A3 and an EK9, id have the Honda any day.

the polo that my friend actually bought yesterday, is the 7 speed s-tronic, he was lucky too, VW told him there is a 7 month wait, turned out there were 4 gti's in the country that hadnt sold. i guess the gearbox is the reason behind the quick 0-60 times.

unsure mate, speaking to a GIAC chap and he was saying that his Ed30 had the 6 speed DSG (think thats what he said) and the DSG box didnt cope with the extra power well - meantioned slippage as the DSG grasped the torque that weas being fed through, this led to hesitation on gear changes - he was basically saying he was getting moist over the 7 speed given the higher torque rating (think the 6 speed rated at 550nm)

Apart from the DC2(Integra Type R for those that don't know), the UK never got a genuine Type R, the Japs love to keep things to themselves! We never got the DC5, the JDM EP3 had DC5 running gear 225PS and LSD!(And you could buy it in White, which again wasn't available in the UK) Even the current European Civic Type R(FN2) is rubbish compared to the JDM domestic one(FD2).

whats power was he running in his edition 30. Strange it cant cope because jonny c had a ed30 with dgs running silly power (timed fastest in the uk over a quarter mile) and he said the dsg copes well.

main reason new cars are having alot of gear is due to the NEDC - national european driving cycle test (test how much co2 a car produces over a distance at varied speed) Having 7 speed means you can have a really low engine speed at the NEDC test speed.

Jojo - i agree we dont get the proper type r models over here. Think is because they are bit too raw for the average uk motorist so maybe not a big enough market for them to sell in the uk.

Tec getting boring..hhm no. Its the greatest stress releaver. You`ve had a crap day at work and you go home in anything with tec and you`ll feel better by the time you get there. It loves every bit of abuse you can give it and takes everything you can throw at it. Apart from the fuel consumption and new longer distance to a new job i was faced with the reason i got bored was just wasnt fast enough, needed new coilovers and some other bits which i couldnt be ***** with changing so got rid. I`ll never get bored to the actual tec though. The noise, the feeling of engagement, the fun to be had, the confidence i have in the engines to lap up whatever i throw at them. I took out my mates uncle in my old CRX and he thought the valves were going to come through the bonnet revving that high lol so yeah the only downside is people that dont know what or how vtec works so think you`re crazy when reving that high and get a bit uncomfortable. When they understand after explaining they`re usually fine.

My girlfriend has an MB6 Civic at the minute. She used to have a Leon Cupra mapped to 235bhp and still loves the Civic more than she ever did the Leon. The Leon she said was just fat and lazy. Sure it pulled well and was faster than the Civic but its nowhere near as fun and exciting to drive.

dunno mate but it was BT conversion, dont know what it was running....its the chaps in Sheffield who run the GIAC supplying garage, cant rem their name

not at all mate but the cost to change upwards compared with what ive saved was a no brainer...... i just would not have been happy knowing that id have parted with 3k on a car with higher mileage and 6 months older just for the sake of DSG which i think would have been more of a novelty....cos lets face it, id have been using the auto box most of the time :)

a good friend of mine has a ep civic type r that he is tuning at the moment(aem induction kit, full exhaust and hondata ecu etc..) the pair of us often wonder whos would be quickest, so once we're both done tweeking with the cars we'll have to have a little race ;) we are local to snetterton circuit and im very good friends with the one of the assistant circuit managers so would be rude not to give it a go on a track evening

I dont know much about Hondas but my mate has this japanese import 4 door civic which was epic on the ring last year and much more of a head turner than the standard civic. It looks like a 4 door integra and a lot of people think it is an integra DC5.

Yep they are beasts too! Another of the true Type-R's although this is the newest one, we just don't get them over here other than import :-( so tempting to get an import. I was in two minds when I bought my S3, I was thinkin of getting either a R32 Skyline GTR or a Civic EK9 Type-R but insurance was so much on the Civic it wasnt worth it was looking at around £1000! And running costs on Skyline would have been too much unfortunately. Love those cars though but for the driving I do, fuel, running costs, comfort, speed etc the S3 8L is just right at the mo :)

JDM Civic Type R(or FD2 for it's chassis name). LSD and 225PS.

I've owned an FN2 type r and driven an EP3 type r. Both very similar I thought. I am viewing a 2003 s3 8l tomorrow. I will be back to this thread with a verdict / summary haha.

Unless you test drive a decent example, I fear you're about to be disappointed! Unless build quality and refinement is what you are after?

yep
a stock s3 will seem dull as he'll compared to the honda.
will need some improvements to keep you even slightly entertained.
unless like jojo says you want something comfy etc etc.
an s3 in stock form is truly boring!

ive had a ep3 that was a good car but I was ****** wen I first got it and had to rag the **** off the car before it went owt like my pre 200+bhp cars.
there is a local 08plate type r round town and his blood was boiling wen I left him at the lights the other day. it was a good old stretch of road and the bloke never stood a chance,

I'm surprised you found it so easy. what spec you at?

My old VR6 was a little slower from standstill then my mates ep3, but as soon as you hit anything uphill or topgear, then go ,it would just walk away from it. My stage 1 S3 is just faster in every way. You've still got be flat out, but it's definitely quicker. There's just no tourqe in the type r, you have to be in the right gear at the right revs to get anything out of it.

seems I've given them too much credit.
my s3 should beat one then. :)

The best trick is if ones behind you slow right down then just boost away! By the time they've wound it up you should be gone:superman:

it was advertised to me as 280bhp with a mtm remap. ive fitted a b5 tip ripped the spilt r out and sorted some boost leaks out and it now a different car.
its not as aggressive as my old cupra r as that was a revo map but its not far off I don't think,
am going to get the map checked out to make sure its safe ect

cool
I'll feel a bit more confident if I come up against one now :)

A hybrid s3 against an fn2 or ep3 type r will walk away with ease. The power/weight is vastly superior in yours.

S3 will feel vastly different to a Cupra due to drivetrain, 4wd vs fwd, about 100kg heavier too. Will no doubt feel a bit more sprightly
