I went back and add another tip. It's so much louder now :) I can definitely hear the turbo whistle so much better. Will try and get a vid, but my camera is poor at recording. Next step, de-cat. Will it throw up any check engine warning signs?

Yeah I know, doing a 8p2 S3 conversion soon. Finding parts is hard.

Audi...A3, Were you driving through bristol today? 53 plate i think? down past the BRI and courthouse? I think I was behind you and then you went right when I went left at the roundabout. Noticed the exhaust and though. hmm, nice.. ha.. Would look good if you debadged the 2.0tdi..

Lol non taken mate, I've seen 1L little vauxhall corsa's with quad exhaust. Improved the sound 4 me so I'm happy with that. You do make it sound as if exhaust = powerful car.

loving the new pipe mod, just wondering if the same can be done to a petrol 1.6, i was planning on doing a new back box but was pricey and now considering this

Sorry for the bump of thread but thought to save making my own thinking about getting a backbox deletion on my 1.6 as I want a twin as in this thread was wondering will this do anything to emissions ? Also has anyone done this to a 1.6 ? Cheers

Hi guys, So after seeing a few people here have had their back box deleted I decided that I too will try it out...
I picked up a replacement pipe with tips already welded on from one of our own members here reddejavu who may I say has a very beautiful and scary white S3!

Here is the replacement pipe:

Very nice tips:

So after having these sitting in my bedroom for a couple weeks I finally had some spare time and went round to a local garage who do welding work and had them measure up and cut off the back box and replace it with the straight pipe:

The guys at the garage tried their best to line it up perfectly straight and I asked for a little poke just so that it's a little noticeable an easier to clean up.
So here is what it now looks like: (ignore the scuff on the rear bumper)

Really liking the look, but I'm getting too old for the extra noise & I also do a lot of motorway miles, so I think the constant drone would annoy me :)

I wonder how much louder it would be if you removed the cat as well??

there is no drone and really is barely noticible from inside the car... the only thing i notice now is the whoop noise as you change gear but even that isnt that loud when your in the driver seat.

Can you buys these? My mate is after one now:)

Won't that mod make the car fail the MOT next year?

Love this mod, anyone know where to get the replacement pipe?

I just done the same mod but I just did a straight pipe from cat back bought a second custom car back for £170 cost £40 to fit so £210 cheap mod really and it sound mint turbo whistle on dump it's great!! :)

best mod so far. also no DPF so get lots of turbo whistle ;)

I was expecting far more noise, nice to see another map with no smoke ;)

So was I to be honest, but it's turned out ideal. I do get some smoke at high revs. no smoke no poke lol

Do like the more noise, can you get a full throttle vid of it, as and when?

I can do, when I find a more secure method of filming it. looking at getting a gopro soon so maybe then :)

That's my pd140 full straight pipe, initially that was a smoke test video, don't know how to record better audio quality, but I think you get the idea.

Was that no silencers atall, decat?

No cat, no res, no boxes at all :cheerful:

Was standing behind car on RR and it was quite loud, not so much when inside :p

Agree, but it was like 3 years ago :) lots of things changed after that, now the sound, power and smoke level are much better :)
So what should I consider .. On mine A3? I want better sound but no any whistlings or fartings .. just nice deeper sound not overreacted..
What is differend with back box delete and straight pipe ?

You have a lot of options. Decat, remove middle silencer, remove back box, remove DPF... or remove all or any combination of the above.

I have DPF removed and remap
But I d like silencer to remove

I'm a car maniac, so for me straight through turboback is the best option =D ahh, maybe I would consider adding one performance resonator in the middle.

For other people I would recommend putting some good aftermarket backbox and straight pipe to it from the turbo. That's the combo I heard on other cars (but w/ stock backbox) and it already had deeper note. Just put non stock well made silencer and exhaust will be bit louder with good tone :)

The final impression of this mod is fantanstic! The bit that I am really impressed by is that when idle or just toddling around town the exhaust doesn't sound any louder but when I floor it the roar from the engine is now noticeable, and then there is the noise it makes as you change gears... The wooing sound as the turbo spools is so addictive I find myself revving it just to hear the noise. The other benefit I have noticed is that I am no longer leaving big clouds of smoke behind me, this is probably as there is no box now for it all to gather up so whatever smoke there is just comes straight out of the tail pipes everytime I floor it :)
Well here is a video I got of the sound from the exhaust whilst revving it. Also bare in mind that my car has no engine mods at all... No map on it, it's a completely standard 2.0 TDI 140 BKD engine:

Thanks for reading
Roar from the engine??? I'm out.
