Hi both these lights have come on and are staying on constantly in the dash display, does anyone know what the problem could be?? Thanks

To help you with this problem, you need to get the car scanned and list the fault codes. These are serious and need to be looked at.

If both lights are staying on, it usually means ABS Wheel Speed Sensor fault. Happened to me last week, car is booked into the dealer for it.

Here is the output from my VAG-COM scan..

Friday,11,August,2006,09:18:15
VAG-COM Version: Release 607.2-D

Control Module Part Number: 8N0 907 379 E
Component and/or Version: ESP 20 CAN V005
Software Coding: 18448
Work Shop Code: WSC 01236
2 Faults Found:
00285 - ABS Wheel Speed Sensor; Front Right (G45)
16-00 - Signal Outside Specifications
00285 - ABS Wheel Speed Sensor; Front Right (G45)
35-10 - - - Intermittent

Hope this helps

My S3 has the same problem but my ABS & ESP lights come on now and again, seems to be when I accelerate hard!!

Is this definatley the ABS Wheel Speed Sensor fault? and if so how much of a job are they they change?

Thanks

HI I HAD THIS FAULT ON MY A4 2.4 2002 ... THE FAULT WAS THE BRAKE SWITCH I ASK AUDI IF THEY SALE AN LOT OF THE SWITCH . THEY SAID ABOUT 3 AN WEEK IT TAKE YOU ABOUT 15 MIN CHANGE OUT SWITCH COST ABOUT £ 6.00

PAZ

I had this problem, although intermittently, it turned out to be a faulty longitudinal sensor, which is located on the steering column

Audi just confirmed it is a faulty longitudinal speed sensor!! well diagnosed Jons3!

Anybody any idea how much this is to change?

Cheers

sensor 1J0907651A - £88.61
Fitting - £89.50

think these are plus VAT too, I had this done with a load of other work, I think it needs to be re-set on VAG computer thing, so its not really a DIY job unless you have that and know what your doing

Just an update. Last week the car went in to have the right ABS sensor changed. Had the car back a couple of days...lights came on again. So this week its in again...to have the right ABS sensor changed/investigated.

Hi Guys, my ABS light etc were staying on too, but I realised that it was a fault with the key not flicking back into position properly after starting the engine. Flicking it back manually sorts my problem out!
I'd consider chucking it in for repair but I can live with it for now!

Cheers

Anybody know what this Logitudinal speed sensor acually does?

Thanx

this might sound stupid. but on top of the battery there that case which has fuses and wires coming out of it

check them 3 fuses, i had for months and months the light kept coming on with 3 beeps,

i changed some sensors. but it didnt fix it, replaced the fuse and i always thought it was a spare. fixed the problem :)

Have a look

i have the esp light on constantly been on since i bought the car, and just last week i got a 3 beeps and the abs light came on and that been on since everyday, the 3 beeps has gone now tho. Gonna have to get it seen to soon.

Not trying to worry you mate, but my ABS and ESP came on last night whilst stuck in v.slow moving traffic on the A3 in surrey, thought i'd turn the engine off and on again and hey presto - it died completely - i was stuck in the fast lane for 45 minutes with no power whatsoever - even my hazard lights died on me after 10 minutes (not very helpful at night) a really helpful RAC man stopped and checked the battery which was a bit low, he jump started the car and it was fine all the way home.

I'm not sure if the A3's have a low battery warning light (mine didn't) but it might be worth a check.

i have 2003 a3, the other day when i switch on engine, the clock had reset, the esp light was on and on the milage counter its displaying 'fuse' and when i switch the engine off and remove the key the radio is stayin on.....can anyone advise me please

Hi Solider483 did you figure out what caused your issue.. I seem to have the same one.

hi mate it sure sounds like you have an earth fault check earth from battery remove and clean and make sure all the other earths are clean and tight

the longtitude censor works in conjunction with the abs censors it constantly measures the speed so the abs kicks in properly when needed hope this helps

hi m8 that problem was a recall so should be a free repair :)

When i turn my ignition on the esp comes on then goes out.. but sometimes the esp light comes on while i crank the engine then off again once its started... does anyone think there could be a problem there? nothing shows on vagcom. I might just be being paranoid. :)

I have this problem with my car too, although it's a little different. Under hard acceleration, both abs and esp lights come on, but not always and when the ignition is turned off and on they reset and don't always come back on. I also have kick back through the brake pedal from the abs even when the light is off which is a pain in the @rse!! I'm aware it could be a wheel sensor or something to do with the load sensor on the rear beam but didn't know about the longtitude sensor. Did you say that it was a factory recall??

Hi,
I've been having similar symptoms this week, ABS light (3 beep warning) and ESP light come on together but only when cold in the mornings, the car is kept in a garage overnight, my journey to work is about 30 minutes, has been fine on the journey home in the evenings. Could this possibly be pads need replacing?? I'm confused.

Thanks
Mike

have you discovered or made any progress with these problems?? im having the same! :(

Well, this freezing weather has just caused the same issue on mine this morning, not happy.
ESP and ABS lights on. Took me 15 mins to get in the car it was that frozen, when i finally managed to get in and start it (via the passenger door!) both lights were on. I thought perhaps they would go off once the car warms up and I restart the car but no.
Guess I'm going to have to go to see Mr Audi. (although its quite reassuring in this icy/snowy weather that hopefully its disabled both the ABS and ESP)

I'll give it a day or two to see if it thaws out a little and maybe the lights will go off.

I have this intermittantly on mine, vag com says longitudinal acceleration sensor implausibe signal, problem is the sensor is £££ from audi, cycle the ignition and it goes away, i'll get round to fixing it one day, when the list gets shorter lol.

the ESP light in no longer illuminated, so thats one down one to go. As S3Dave mentioned likely due to ice build up. I now have full control back of the ESP, the lights not on and the ESP button works again. Hopefully the same will happen with the ABS when i try it again later.
Temporamental these Audis in cold weather. Last year the fuel filler release went on strike on me when it snowed, preventing me from refueling. When i managed to finally get it open it then wouldnt shut for a few days until the weather warmed up.

Sometimes its something you never think of. On my A4 recently I have been getting a red brake warning on the DIS when very cold and this turned out to be the battery on its way out. Car still started fine but voltage was dropping to around 12v whereas a good 12v battery should hold 12.6v. Who would think that a brake warning light is a flat battery?!!

Maybe a long shot, but this could be worth investigating...

I've got an 03 A3 2.0 TDI which had been faultless until the electrics started playing up, it started when the ESP light came on. I started having problems with starting and to overcome this, I disconnected the battery for a while and then it would start OK...
I had an Auto Electrician plug his magic box in and he managed to clear nearly all the faults from the ECU apart from the ESP light and the latest light,, the ABS.. The ABS fault showed up as a rear offside speed sensor, which isn't much of a job to change unless like mine, it sheared off in the hole, it cost me about 70 quid to buy... When I get time I will check the earths on the car as some things like the rear wiper only works when it wants to...

My 1998 audi a3 1.6 failed mot because the ABS light was staying on. I get 3 beeps every now and then, and a red light with (!). this light/beeps goes and comes (the ABS has been known to come and go but is now staying)....

I had the car scanned and it gave me intermittent wheel speed sensor fault on rear left and right....

So i was wondering - does that mean it is definately the sensors or could it still be caused by something else - wiring for example or one of the other sensors mentioned above?? because ive cleaned around the area of sensor with wire brush (without unbolting it) and then unclipped the sensor and the inside connections look clean... im trying to unbolt the part attached to the rear of the brakes but bolt is corroded tight so soaking it in wd40 for a bit to c if I can get it off.... once I do i should be able to c any dirt is that correct? and if no dirt its something else ???

hi im having same prob ive had on comp and upto now replaced abs pump had it recoaded but sy=till had fault i then replaced fuse box on top off batery this sorted it for about 10 minutes it came back on im now gonna try earth stap from bat to chasey dunno im thinking elecktrical foault as this happond to sum1 b4 who i knew and simler prob

I recently had the same problem with my 03 A4 and it turns out the only problem was the wheels needed to be re-torqued. I just switched back to my summer tires. The ABS and ESP lights went out and I haven't had a problem since.

"wheels needed to be re-torqued". ?

does that mean what I think it does ? you loosened them and re-tightned them or in your case you swapped over the alloys ?
How long have you been OK since doing the changeover ?

It's been over a week now since I've had the problem. My mechanic thinks the wheels may have been a little loose and were wobbling since they were not snug against the hub. It was only one wheel in particular that was causing the problem. It's the only thing that we can think is the problem because no codes came up and it has no longer been a problem since I went in last week.

Hi all im having simular problems with s3 on 2002 if i drive it around really steady i mean real steady staying off the boost i have no problems at all but the first time i start to do any sort of quick accelerating once at the end of my travels i turn it off (go in shop or something) then come out to fire it up to go home i have esp + abs lights followed by 3 beeps as i set off. the fault will only clear once the car has been sat for a couple of hours any help would be great thanks

I took mine in for a service. Needed new battery. Esp and steering light on. Took it back to be checked, lights went out now have abs light on and an intermittent esp.

Needs to be scanned for fault codes...

ABS problems will disable ESP
