Missing Radar detector thingy?

If you order ACC (or DA (Option PCE)), Pre-Sense Front (not Pre-Sense Basic) will come automatically with the car/that option. Free.

Pre-Sense Front (Audi) = City Emergency Braking (VW)

1. Yes
2. If you're travelling above 18mph, and approach an obstruction, the DIS will display a red triangle, and you will hear a beep. If you still do nothing, the brakes will "jolt" to wake you up. If you still don't do anything the system will partially brake (30%) to reduce the impact, if you still do nothing, you will crash.
3. Yes, but only if the DIS alert and braking jolt has already taken place

Hope you're going to make a video of the testing :)

Thanks for that - now it's clear! But like so many other Audi features they do like to confuse (Pre-Sense Front = City Emergency Braking, but Pre-Sense Basic is entirely different). Bit like the Hold Assist and Hill Hold Assist, and Ultra as well. Arghh!

Was this ever finally resolved? I see that the extended speed with the DA package has gone from the brochure and configurator from MY15 so assume that ALL radar-equipped A3/S3 come with the flat lens? Is that correct?

An associated question - I have ordered the DA package and am unsure what this feature actually does?

Front Assist incl. city automatic emergency braking for ACC high

What does the "city automatic emergency braking" do?

Pretty sure all S3's only have the dome sensor.

So can other MY15 S3 and A3 owners confirm that they do or don't have flat sensors?

I asked my dealer via email what I will have as I'm not a fan of the flat. He said dome and that's a November delivery. It seems all S3's have dome, I'm sure there is some technical reason behind it such as bumper, other equipment added, etc, etc.

My car has arrived at Exeter Audi today and they sent me some photos of it coming off the transporter. And I do believe from this photo that it looks as though it has a dome radar sensor - and mine is a lowly 1.4TFSI. That seems to blow the theory that domes are only being fitted to S3 models - unless they have fitted an S3 engine in my car LOL. My car has the Driver Assistance Package and I wonder if that has anything to do with it?

It seems that if you have the driver assistance package, you get the dome sensor !

But I wonder why when the extended speed range up to 124mph has now been dropped from the DA description. Very odd!

My new S3 that's just arrived at the dealer has a dome radar thingy. No assistance pack.

Going by all the posts it looks like it's the A3s with driver assistance pack and all S3s that get the dome, all the rest get the flat sensor.

It's done by date too. I have the dome, but no driver assistance pack (though I have all the components of it).

So you've got an A3 just with ACC then and nothing else?

What? No - my spec is in my signature! I just don't have the driver assistance pack, but I have all the parts form it specced separately. The configurator wouldn't let you spec it with some other option I had at the time I ordered, for some reason.

Sorry I meant no other driving assist, etc not kit in general.

Think yours is one of the only A3's ( with the white A3 above ) to have dome and not flat. Nothing concrete either way to say what dictates what you get as seems like the S3 theory is out now.

Either way the dome looks a lot better.

I'd be interested to see if the dome radar performs better in any way (range?), I suppose time will tell.

I have no driving aids (lane assist etc.) but have the dome - the dome was the only version fitted until some months ago. At the time the flat version started appearing someone in a thread here did some investigations and dscovered that the dome does indeed have increased range compared with the flat version. This would account for it being fitted where the driver assistance package is fitted, to allow for the higher speeds. I wasn't aware this had now been dropped from the DA description, but surely they wouldn't fit the dome unless it was needed, as presumably the flat one is cheaper (otherwise they'd fit the dome on all cars as single inventory would be less expensive than stocking both).

There are plenty that were built around mine and before with the dome - like I said, the build date matters as well. The flat one was only introduced later.

Yeah, they've obviously introduced the flat sensor after production began and the S3 and certain other cars still get the dome, but why does the S3 get the dome when the Drivers Assistance Package has not been selected? In this case surely you wouldn't need the extended range of the dome.

Good question, long shot but maybe something to do with speed of acceleration and braking power in the S3 OR maybe because it has a different front bumper, etc.

It's probably a prestige thing.

Has anyone been able to come up with a definitive answer about the flat v dome sensor for ACC then?

Reading this post, there still seems some confusion on the matter

This issue doesn't effect me because I havent spec'ed ACC, but just thinking of other members who have :thumbs up:

No, would still love to know which cars have flat sensors and which cars have dome sensors

I thought that this had been resolved. For current cars I think that the dome version is fitted to all S3s that have ACC. It is also fitted to other versions where the Driver Assistance Pack has been optioned. Any others get the flat version. Quite why I have no idea!

Has anyone taken delivery in the past few weeks and have we managed to confirm our assumptions yet?

I'm getting mine this week. Not a s3 so will let you know If flat or dome

Awesome @kxt79 ! Sure your glad the wait is almost over, mind if I ask what spec you got?
Yes can't wait now for it to arrive! So I think I am very in the monority here with my choice but here's what I went for

1.4. cod SB Stronic
Sport trim
Xenon light package
Comfort pack
Folding Mirrors
Privacy glass
ACC
Monsoon grey.

NIce! What made you go for the xenon light package and not an sline? I've bought a sport trim sb too... seems we're very much in the minority hey (Spec on my signature but I've actually replaced park plus with ACC - forgot to update that). Whens the pick up ? :) Did ya have a long week... I'm two weeks down... 9 to go :'(

Well when I priced the s-line up you still have to pay extra for the interior lighting pack and the cornering lights - so ended up quite a few pounds more. So I decided for me the sport with a bit more spec was a better option for me personally. I won't lie I've agonised over it thought!! Mines been about 10 Weeks so not to bad! Any nerves on your spec or do you think you will leave it as is?

Know the feeling I did the same but in the end it came down to monthly budget for me, would love the s line though. Nerves! LOL already changed it 4 times, my dealer is probably ready to kill me! :audibash:

Although my dealer hasn't managed to put my last change (ACC) on as orders were locked this week for MY16 changes, So slightly worried that my order might get locked before he makes the change! :(! Also suddenly contemplating switching from a SB to a 3dr... :05.18 flustered:

picked ours up yesterday my15 with ACC and no other assistance packages and its a flat sensor, its a s-line cab

I have spoken to Audi UK on the phone and they have told me that both the Dome and the square plate are just for ACC. The dome is the older version and the square plate is the new version...

I prefer the old version!

^ It's not quite as simplistic as that, they are 2 different sensors with different specs and ranges.

It used to be that the dome was fitted if you had ACC High (no longer offered) and/or some DA options, and the square plate was fitted with ACC low or some other combo, except if you have a S3 in which case you always get the dome version (or some permutation like that).

So it's safe to assume that all S3's with ACC come with the domed radar instead of the flat one even if DA pack is not specified?

Here's my theory: Even if an S3 doesn't have DA pack so ACC is limited to 150 km/h it still detects cars 240 m away instead of 160 m for the sake of safety since it is a much faster car than an A3.

Does that make any sense?

Seems to be a good working theory that I'm willing to settle on. Still like the look of the dome tbf :(
