Are S3 Wheels The Easiest Ever To Kerb?

As per the title. Discuss.....

After 24 years of driving and never damaging a wheel, I have now scuffed two in 9 months.
The tyre doesn't project beyond the rim, so, the slightest parking touch equals instant £150 refurbishment bill.

I'd counter they are no different to any wheels - if they touch a curb they will scuff and get damaged.

It's the rim protection from the particular type of tyre fitted to the S3 that's the issue.

I have 18"s on my company BMW - so many times I have thought I have curbed the wheels, but the tyres (Goodyear Run-flats) have a good 30mm of protection. I don't take care with these wheels like I do on my S3 but never curbed in 18 months.

Exactly my thoughts rear wheel is tucked in. Im gonna throw 15mm spacers on at the back hopefully that helps

I thought most high end tyres have a good bit of coverage - michelins on my a4 do, now worried.com about kerbing ( not just me - lol )

Yep - the continentals fitted are the worst I have ever seen. The rim is level with the tyre wall.

Well.... how can I put this....

The dipping passenger door mirror is great, but because the body is convex, all you really see is the body of the car, can't see the wheels at all when reversing using the door mirrors !

The RR Evoque has a clever system, using mini cameras mounted in the door mirrors, shows you each wheel on the MMI screen.

They are also prone to chips in the painted section the C0Z S3 wheels.

"Delicate" best describes them.

Whilst Kumho have a pointless 3.5mm.

No different to any other 18" alloy with 40 section rubber. Years of having cars with 18, 19 and now 20" rims (on our Porsche) have taught me to be careful. Only once in the last 10 years have I kerbed a wheel and that was a pot hole in a supermarket car park, who I then successfully claimed against. Mind you, the missis aint so careful, so then there's Wicked Wheels to the rescue. LOL.

My previous car had 18" Michelin's with rim protection and that didn't stop the alloys being damaged by kerbs. So far, so good, my saloon has yet to have its wheels damaged...

Agreed, rim protection is ok but it don't work miracles.

Well.... how can I put this....

I find the dipping mirrors more than adequate for avoiding kerbing, just line up the edge of the body with the kerb and hey presto ......perfect parking!!
No amount of rubber will protect your rims if you run them against a kerb!!!!

Cant see your front wheels through your mirrors though, they tend to be the ones that people kerb.

People kerb wheels because they go into spaces forwards, If you always reverse park using mirrors It'll never happen!!
