And there are thousands of us that have had no issues at all, even with running higher boost.

*Touch wood.

It might if you remap/tuning box your car (and not take it off before your recovered at the side of the road) and it goes!! :3sadwalk:

Correct.
Anyone here knows how to find the s/n of the IHI turbo?
This is the problematic s/n:

Yes, the plate is at the back end of the turbo by the downpipe but on the underside. It is not visible from the engine bay by naked eye.

I found mine by putting my iphone on video with light on and hovering it around in the area.

Mine is April 2014 registered, built March 14 and it has the N rated turbo.

Its also having a hard life with increased boost (1.2 upto 1.5 bar) and so far so good. It's hit the 155 limiter about 6/7 times now, been launched about 35-40x in acceleration testing. It's been fine so far. Touch wood *

Good to hear mate..
So all N series are to be replaced? Or you need to have all s/n as I wrote earlier?

There has been no recall as far as I'm aware.

There have been a few failures reported but it's more than likely down to a dodgy batch of turbos rather than a dodgy model/serial brand of the turbo. There are tens of thousands of these turbos running the streets in S3 / Golf R and Leon Cupra form.

I doubt there will be a recall. More than likely just an automatic yes if they come in for warranty work for failure.

Yeah the serial number is the same. It's just an A that has replaced the N (Apparently)

Ok, so July 2014 are A rated?
I read that there is a speculation that Audi/VAG will replace the turbocharger with more aggressive one.

They may well be but who knows, March built April reg 2014 cars and before are definitely N.

Would need someone with a brand new July built car to have a nosey to confirm.

Could you put a video to show us how to done it?

Thanks

My S3 was built and delivered in January - turbo failed after 1300 miles. Broken unit was returned to the factory but I have not heard any further feedback. I also had the cat and fuel pump replaced at the same time but was told all as a result of the turbo issue.

Now close to 14k miles and no further issues at all. As an aside, I've only needed to add 0.5 litre of oil in that time which I take as a good sign that I have a healthy unit

Just checked my turbo s/n - 06K 145 702 N. Car was built Feb 14, has done 4k miles so far and seems ok. Hasn't filled me with confidence about getting a remap when they become available though :ermm:

I think that if it's in the bad batch,a remap is asking for trouble.

The problem is that if Audi do find any evidence of remapping(and a tuning box would likely get around that),they will immediately cancel the engine related warranty.

I think everybody will appreciate a vid sharing of where can we find this s/n.

BTW, today i checked with the dealer on Audi's computers searched by my vin# and there was no comment to replace something.

I'll try and get a video to show where it is but its just a case of locating the turbo and on its underside there's an ID plate, impossible to see from up above so has to be recorded on a video/iphone.

If your car is pre April 2014 build, you will have the N rated turbo, if your car is newer than April 2014, then yes, who knows what version you have, it really needs someone with a June/July build to have a look around and verify

Just been looking at my MY15 built end of May, and stamped on top at back of turbo is IHI Turbo 23244-01, quick google and talk on a european forum suggesting this is the new model of IHI Turbo being fitted to The S3, would be intrested to see if everyone else has this on their MY15's
Cheers Col
ps cut my arm to ribbons trying to film a non exsistent plate underneath till I noticed the stamp on the top, lol

Nope, that is incorrect, that's exactly the same indication as mine (IHI Turbo 23244-01) but yet I have the N on the ID plate on the underside. You need to identify the plate on the underside for the Part Number, the 23244-01 is just the model number.

And it is there, you just need to dig a little deeper.

Thanks for that Leo will try again later then, how far under as can't even feel a plate, theres a stamp on the rotor casing but video'd that and cant see a letter and numbers dont seem to match from earlier in thread, any help appreciated

I've just been out and it's easier than I thought actually, have a look at this picture...

The ID plate is pretty much where that red arrow is pointing too but just a little further down (towards the ground), pretty much on the curve of the turbo, you should feel a shiny smooth surface with your finger, that's the plate, its very close to where the bottom of that star shaped bolt would be. Your best bet would be to put your iphone on with light and get it focused in close (on iphone you normally double tap the centre of the screen so it focus's a little better) as although you may video it, the focus may be out a little in order to read the letters. You could also try the camera in selfie mode so you can see what you're looking at. Put your phone in pretty much in the position of the red arrow, you'll find it.

The 2nd pic shows the part number, (Just above the Made in Germany) 2nd bottom line - 06K 145 702 N (You may need to wet your finger and give the plate a little rub to clean off any dirt in order to see the details) Looking at the top pic, the ID plate faces to the right not the south (ground). If you could get your head in, you would view the plate from the right side looking left

No probs.

Very interesting. So yours is the latest MY15 car, built only 2 months ago in factory, but yet still has the N rated turbo.

I suspect it must have just been a dodgy batch, there will be tens of thousands out there on the S3/Golf R and Leon Cupra cars but yet there's only a handful of failures.

Yeah be interesting to note if any more recent ones got the A rated turbo, as stated in earlier post by someone not worried though as that what warranty is for also had no issues so far 'touch wood' about 900 miles on clock.
Out of interest does anyone know if the middle row of 16 numbers has any significance as mine is different to the numbers on yours, top line and s/n the same.
Cheers Col

I hope they extend the warranty on this part past the initial 3 years if there is indeed an inherent fault with the turbo. I intend my S3 to be a keeper and would be mighty ****** off if the turbo went outside of warranty period.

That's quite a difference.

Not sure how that relates, they have the old down as 1KO 145 702 J and the new as 1KO 145 702T, you can see from my pic that the PN of our turbo units in the UK is 06K 145 702 N and I know the new is 06K 145 702 A. The S3 8V in hot climate countries, Australia, South Africa etc get the S3 with about 275hp in comparison to our 296hp here in the UK. Not sure if that's just down to software that inhibits that or if its a different hardware setup. To me, the PN in the picture is different to what we have here in the UK so its a different turbo unit they're using in Australia.

I'm sure I read one of the tuning companies possibly APR took a new 'T' model apart and could not see any visible difference between the new replacement turbo and the old one. If I can find the post I will link to it. So on that basis you could be correct. I think Audi UK need to get on top of this pronto and dispel some of the myth before it turns into a PR disaster.

The APR / AoA TSB posted in the 8V tuning thread suggest no recall, just automatic replacement of the turbo with the "T" suffix, if the turbo fails, or the Engine MIL is illuminated.

What is the significance of the Vehicle Specific Equipment box in the top right of this bulletin - CNTC (2.0L)...?

According to my V5C the engine number is CJXC020707 and variant is ACJXCQ1.

My S3 was built during May this year. Should I be worried...?

Thank you,
Billy

No even if the worse happens you covered by your warranty, so dont worry and carry on enjoying your motor

Is this something that if it's faulty, it should die relatively early i.e. in the first 3 years

Is this applicable to the S3? different engine code see this attached for more info 702N is version 2 and 702A version 3, 702T for other 2.0T in VAG group.

VWVortex.com - 21E7 UPDATE – Turbocharger (NVLW)

My S3 was built May 12th so week 20 built and I appear to have the 06K 145 702 N so I think I wont be remapping in the future....to be safe.

Its all very well Audi saying 'don't worry, just drive it to the dealer' but when you're in the outside lane of the autobahn on a Sunday afternoon on holiday what will they do to compensate you.

For what its worth mine is build week 25 MY15 and it has a 702N part number (not serial number) so maybe the fault is on a range of serial numbers for that part?
