Surely these springs should not look like this??!!

Rear and front there, and they're the same on both sides. When I saw the first one I was thinking ok this one has collapsed but then I discover that all of them are like this, so now I'm confused! Handling is spot on and it's not knocking but there is a bearing type moan which I thought was noises tyres at first... It's a 55 plate sportback tdi.

Also worth mentioning there are no breaks or fractures in the springs

Looks like a lowering spring of some sort to me, only way I could explain it.

You are correct though the standard springs do not look like these do

Aftermarket springs don't normally look like that either. Perhaps someone decided to lower the car by compressing the spring like that?

They're oem because of the paint markings.

I'm no expert, but looking at the those photos, I'd guess that some spring clamps have been fitted on them for a few years?

the springs have been heated and compressed. shame really as i thought this kind of bodging has been wiped out now.

sorry pal but you will require a new set of decent quality lowering springs if you want to keep the same ride height

Have you had the springs off and look inside maybe theyve welded them together too

Scott this is my conclusion also, they couldn't have all collapsed the same way like that. I don't mind swapping out the springs for some eibachs as it's doing nothing for the tyres and tracking with the current set up. I havent had the springs off yet so can't really see if they've been welded... So to swap for a similar ride height I would think about 30mm would keep the sporty look It has currently??.

im 100% sure they have been heated up whilst on the car. i used to see this quite a bit back in the day ive even seen small but fat U clamps used (like a small fat exhaust u clamp) to clamp the springs to lower them really makes you think of the IQ of these people....

this was a trick back in the 80s 90s , budget lowering

At least we haven't come across a coil being cut out to lower the ride height.

Got round to replacing these

Not sure if they are right as they don't locate so good with the top mount. Any ideas?

Yes I am a big douche! Rubbish day yesterday changed over all the springs to the eibachs which was fine after I put them the right way round check out the old ones below!!!!!

So after all that I get in the car for a test drive and have no power steering (

And red warning power steering and amber traction control light

There is a power steering reset which goes something like
Ignition on
Turn fully left and hold for 30 seconds
Turn fully right and hold for 30 seconds
Return to centre
Ignition off

Then hold your breath and keep your fingers crossed!

Thanks for your help on this bud, unfortunately the power steering rack is goosed I was manhandling the hubs when i was replacing the springs and must of been too ruff with the it. It would of only taken a big pot hole to do the same thing but now have to change the unit £££
