as above, there is a single clunk noise coming from what sounds like the passenger side front (?) under braking.

it doesnt happen all the time...

ive had the mot guy take a look but he cant see anything 'wrong'.

any ideas gratefully received!

Sounds like a worn brake pads that are loose in the caliper.

Any breaking at speed wobble....?

Remove front wheel. Whilst jack up grab lower control arm and shake...if it moves at all replace both and then consider upper arms as well.
Above 75K miles its probably needed anyway...dont forget new drop links....

Yeah, most likely a balljoint or cheap pads/worn caliper carrier issue as pointed above. Top front control arms also make that noise when worn as the weight of the car moves the balljoint into it's socket...

Ball joint, you might not fell anything unless the wishbone is off and you can push the ball joint up and down. If it is completely hanging you will feel it.

So when it's up try to move the lower link arm?

I've noticed that I can move the drive shaft front to back ( towards wheel and back) about 1mm does that have to do with this? I think that have to do with my speed wobble at higher speeds.

I have the same on mine, under hard braking or acceleration - Local garage spent 2 hours trying to find the fault last week, found very slight play in a lower rear ball joint, but hardly anything. Had discs and pads changed last weekend and still making noise. Have also noticed if I am turning slightly to the right I am getting a clicking noise but think it might be from the drivers side

Yes it should be firm. If it rocks they need to go. Typically 75k miles. Some small play is normal on the shafts IMHO.

Had same issue. Found my r/f inner cv axle joint badly worn out. Replaced axle and clunk on braking went away.
