Sooo had a fun 12hr drive from London to France (2 hrs ish from Bordeaux)... Absolutely enjoyed ever minute - until....

When I arrived... My keys decided to lock themselves in the boot arghhhhhhhh! All I'm going to say is yes I hate that middle button and yea I blame Audi!!!!! (Ok fine I was silly to put keys down in the boot - but shhhhhh I don't want to hear it :( ). Luckily I had my suitcase out, but shame all my electronics are baking in the boot :(

Audi assist we're amazing and had an English AA van out within 2-3 hours (****** impressive considering we were in the middle of nowhere), and best of all for free :)

AA guy prised my door open with a wedge and airbag (almost cried) - he tried but failed to open the car - and wanted to smash the window to get in - UMMM no!!!!!

Called around like a madman - no glass available for my car in France! No locksmiths available to pick the lock! Audi confirmed no way in without a key (10 days to order) or by smashing window!

Ended up flying the missus home today - she is going to next day post the spare key over *sigh*

Moral of the story... NEVER USE THAT F*****G MIDDLE BUTTON... I'm an idiot... France have no glass for my car nor any decent locksmiths... I'm an idiot

Hope you take something away from this - like err I dunno, never use the middle button?

Anyways... At least when the keys get here, I'll have a nice drive back on my own (well my dog too) without her nagging at me for having a little spirited drive ;)

Jeez bet that was gutting!

Was there noone back home who could have sent the spare key? We always make sure some local friends/relatives have spare keys to our house in case of emergencies. Mine's a company car so the spare lives at the office anyway so easy to get it sent anywhere.
 
I hate to say it, but all the people who put down advanced key as just a gimmick and not worth it - this situation can't happen with it!

Glad you are getting it sorted without the need to smash a window!

Audi should use this as a case study, sales would go through the boot! Sorry couldn't resist ;)
 
I have been concerned about this and make sure that if my wife and I are travelling together she carries the spare key. I also make sure she only puts it in her handbag and not a suitcase, so it won't get locked in the car. (she always has a bag with her, but if it is in the car the doors will be unlocked).
It can take some time to find though, as whatever the size of bag it always seems to have as much in it as Mary Poppins' bag. Never seen the aspidistra come out yet, but I'm sure it's in there somewhere.
 
You can order a plastic wallet key with embedded immobiliser chip from your Audi dealer for around £190, this will give you full functionality (get into car, start car etc.) if you don't fancy carrying the spare fob around with you abroad.


Or.


From your favourite key-cutting market stall - just get them to cut a slim metal key. Again, this can be carried in your wallet etc. will enable you to lock/unlock the doors/boot, put it into the ignition and switch ignition on (to disable alarm within 10 seconds) - but will NOT allow the car to be started (as it has no immobiliser chip).

The second option is popular with watersports enthusiasts (kayakers and surfers, I mean) - they can lock in their "proper" fob key that is hidden somewhere in the car, take the slim key with them. Then on their return to the car, unlock door, disable alarm, retrieve "proper" fob key and drive home.

Obviously, the first option is useful if you lose your fob key, but the second option is only useful if you lock your fob key in, but it won't help you if you lose your fob key abroad.

I don't understand the middle button myself.... I mean why press it when you can press the unlock button instead? At least your getting sorted without any major damage.
 
I've never understood the middle button either. On a saloon where the boot actually pops up and opens itself then it maybe makes some sense, but it's still a disaster waiting to happen in terms of locking your keys in. On a hatch where it doesn't even open the boot then it seems completely pointless and a disaster waiting to happen! It's a shame there's no way to disable it in the car's menus...
 
I'd disable all the buttons on my key if you could. Far too easy to accidentally lean on them while they are in your pocket, as I've discovered before.

Aside from the auto-opening on the saloon, the only other advantage is that, if it was locked to start with, the car re-locks and alarms when the boot is closed without need to press the fob button again. Of course that's also it's big weakness, as this thread illustrates.
 
How do you open the boot from inside the car without a key fob then?

Perhaps I'm being stupid, but I can't see a boot release button in mine (like I used to have in my scirocco)?
 
Not sure you could do it directly but you could always fold the back seats down and grab the offending key fob from the boot?

You open the car door, walk to the rear of the car and press the button ;)

What does your middle button do?

Mine makes the boot fly open by itself at the speed of light :blink:
 
On the plus side its reassuring they cannot open it

All well and good if you can get the back doors open I guess...
 
Dead easy. Most locksmiths worth their salt, or any car thief will have a U66 Inner Groove Pick. 45 seconds or less to get in.

It already is a remote opening boot! Just no good if you lock the remote IN the boot...

I really don't see the point of the remote release unless it physically opens the boot or tailgate fully. On the hatchbacks you still have to physically open it so what's the point? It doesn't save you any time or effort at all, all it does is obviate the need to lock the car again after you've closed the tailgate which firstly doesn't exactly save you much effort and secondly just allows the possibility of locking the keys in the boot.

Exactly, I'm sure someone has modded a hatch back to open remotely.

I think the idea to just open the boot is a security feature but then again not 100% sure. I've never used just the boot unlock button.
 
ECS Tuning do a kit, but you can DIY quite cheaply.

I would hate my hatch to automatically open fully, at work we have a garage with a low concrete roof/ceiling, and it fouls when the hatch/tailgate is open. Having it fly up into the concrete would be a disaster.

The saloon boot lid, of course, opens at a much reduced height.

Yer you'd have to be careful where you use it, maybe that's why Audi don't put it on as standard.

Can't really say I see the point of an internal boot release switch/lever, unless you drive a taxi that is :p
 
It's handy when you stop to pick someone up and they need to chuck stuff/shopping in the boot, especially when it's raining and you don't want to get out the car ;)

Does the button on the remote work when the key is in the ignition and the car is running?
 
Ok thanks, here's another one.

If I stop and get out the car with the engine still running does the boot unlock like the other doors do?

Would I need to push the unlock button if the engine was running?
 
If you have the car set to lock itself when you drive away then it will unlock all doors when you turn off the ignition and remove the key.

If you open the driver's door before removing the key then only the driver's door will unlock. You'll need to push the button on the door to unlock the other doors and boot. When you drive off the car will re-lock again.
