HID fog install question, same risks as HID dipped beams?

Hey guys,

There are literally hundreds of posts on here discussing why HID kits for the dipped beams on A3 8P unless OEM are a bad idea due to potential wiper motor failure. Just wanted to know if the same risks are associated with installing regular HID kits to the fog lights or it's specific to the wiring relating to the dipped beams.

Hi Lingo89,

Using HID kits in fog lights still risky for the A3, not as risky as using it for Low or High beam since the bulbs & ballast are located more far away from the motor.
I would not recommend to install regular aftermarket HIDs on Audi A3.
The risk and cost is too high in my opinion.

Few years ago we developed a specific HID for Audi A3 that is safe for the wiper motor.
That HID can be installed in Low - High beam & also in fog lights.
Besides the specific HID for A3 only some OEM HID bulbs & ballast (not all of them) are safe to be installed on the Audi A3.

Aftermarket HID kits produce interferences due to the high voltage they use for start up.
The wiper motor often die because of this interferences. It can happen within 1 day or after 1-2 years
Some OEM HID kits & the Welldone A38P HID are designed so the high voltage will not create interferences.

I have been running HIDs in my fogs for years now without any issues!
if it bothers you just get a can bus HID kit... shouldn't have any issues.

the problem is random, it may not affect say 1 out of 5 people.
Some use cheap ebay HID kits without any problem for years, but most people have instant wiper motor problems, and even then the people with it working for years might then suddenly get the same problem.

Its just pot luck.

saying this, il get my HID kit from Welldone coming from ups delivery tomorrow, so cant wait to fit my safe kit!

You realise that we are talking about fog lights and not the headlights... There is not one single report of wiper motors blowing from HID fogs.

i just thought it would of been the same whereever you wired them.
o in that case, a cheap ebay special for the less important fogs then aha.

Yes, there are reports.
Just not on this forum.
As JJ.Foulds said the problem is random. Not all Audi A3 have problems with HID kits.
I know people using aftermarket HID kits for many years without issues, but I also know many with broken motors.

Most of the people just install HID in low beam.
Few will install on fog lights, so it will be harder to find somebody posting about it on the forum.

In another forum some users were saying that the solution to the wiper motor problem was to use fog lights to power the HID ballast & bulbs.
Some guy did as they told him & he ended up with a broken wiper motor.
I can try to find it if somebody thinks is relevant.
For my experience I can say CANBUS or not, low beam or fog lights... it won't make a big difference.
(the more far away you can install the ballast the better to avoid interferences)

Ash what hid kit do you have in your fogs then ? I meed 6000K to match my xenon headlamps any chance you could find me one i should buy ?

In Audipt.com (portuguese forum) there are reports of users with this HID that ended up with a broken motor.
I know because one user from that forum had to send the motor to us to be repaired.

It took 2 years for the wiper motor to fail.
The user was saying in the forum that his HID & motor were perfect for 2 years until one day the motor died.

In Portugal & other countries some people usually sell this HID as "PHILIPS" or "PHILIPS Patent" even it's obvious PHILIPS has no relation at all with this kits.
They call them PHILIPS CANBUS PRO.

Basically he is saying:
"HID was installed almost 2 years ago & motor still working until now. Everything perfect, 5 stars!"​

"Madlima29" has been selling this PHILIPS CANBUS PRO HID kits on Audipt.com forum for a while.
He installed that HID to the user "Marcio Amorim" & told him it was safe to use those HID kits.
But 2 years later his motor died & he contact us to repair the motor.


I have been working on the Audi A3 & wiper motor problem for the last 7 years.
We found out that the 25.000v that the ballast use to power the bulbs were the problem.
Audi A3 OEM ballast & bulbs do not have that problem because they work in a different way than aftermarket HID kits.

I know for some of you will be hard to believe but be found the problem in 2008 & we did fix it.
We manage to avoid the interference by controlling the high voltage from the HID kit.

Sure you can.
OEM Ballast & Bulbs can be installed almost anywhere.

Anyway the topic is not about OEM or not OEM.
The OP was asking if it's safe to install an aftermarket HID kit in fog lights.

As an Audi owner, with 7 years experience working in the auto lighting business I would say that is not safe.
That is my opinion after what I have learned from personal experience & what I have read in Audi forums around the world.
Risk may be lower than HID installed in low or high beam, but there is definitely a risk.

Lingo89 is free to decide if the risk is worth it for him or not.

Marcio Amorim from Audipt.com used the "PHILIPS" HID kit for the low beam lights.

The guy who broke the wiper motor with HID installed as fog lights was from another forum & he was using a different HID kit.
