Hi all,

It's time for an upgrade on my front door speakers! I've had a look around but figured I would tell all what I've got and see if there's anything specific I should be looking at. I've got the basic Audi kit which only has speakers in the front (!?!?). So I'm running the AppRadio 2 (SPH-DA100 - MOSFET 50W x 4 amplifier) upfront with a JL Audio G2250 250W Two Channel Amplifier and Infinity sub in the back.

Looking for something mid-range I would say but I really don't have much of an idea where to start. I wired in the existing kit myself (and have done a few times) so do know my way around a little bit but have never installed front speakers before.

Would I be looking at main speakers and tweeters? Not bothered about adding speakers in the back as most say you can get a pretty good experience from just the front and a sub in the boot. And would I run the speakers off the amp or off the head unit?

I know this should be in the ICE section but it doesn't get much traffic so thought I'd post here. Any help towards choosing the right speakers or any fittings and wiring that I need would be awesome! :thrashi:

Cheers guys,

Peace x

Also, not looking to blast the doors off but I do like my dub and drum and bass! :yahoo::jump::rockwoot:

I would recommend focal speakers all day long, fantastic speaker the k2 power ones are a very good speaker IMO, also sound deaden the doors inner and outer skins, good sound deadening is silent coat.

I would always recommend running the speakers of a amp.

Hope this helps
Dan

Cheers for the reply Dan! Ok so will definitely run off the amp and get some sound deadening. K2s are looking a bit out of my budget if I'm honest, I'm thinking more medium range? What do you think of these:

Car Audio Equipment | Buy online at Car Audio Security

Had a hunt around and apparently the speakers are 6.5" so should be right sizing wise. And then the rest of the shopping basket...

Car Audio Equipment | Buy online at Car Audio Security - can anyone confirm these will fit?

Hopefully they're not too much of a big to wire! Don't understand this whole crossover/speaker/tweeter milarky!

Thanks mate.

I have those JL components up front in another car, absolutely divine, just look up their American Amazon.com reviews.

I've got 2 sets of £30 JBL CS 6C to go in so can't comment, but think they will be an amazing bang for buck.

hi there, you cant go wrong with brands such as: Dyna Audio,Focal, morel, rainbow, seas, stay clear of your sony, kenwood, jvc, type brands

Awesome! Cheers Gaz. That's reassuring! What adapters are you using for your A3? Hoping I don't have too much trouble wiring it, got the legendary AndyMacs guide for the door card (http://freepdfhosting.com/a6b33703ba.pdf) so just need to figure out where everything goes and how to get the power from the sub. Are you running off the HU?

And with regards to sound deadening do I just stuff a load behind the speaker???

Hello,

To be honest mate they are the medium range just like anything you can pay £1000s for just the mid bass speakers alone.....can't go wrong with the jbl to be honest or jl audio.

Cheers Dan

Cheers Chris, think those JLs are the one!

Wow! Guess I'm going low range then haha! Yeah hoping those JLs will be ok. Thinking I'm gonna have a lot more questions when it comes to wiring!

Can anyone recommend adapters? You guys think the ones I've found will be ok? And wheres the best place for the sound deadening? Behind the speaker?

And am I right in thinking if I run the speakers from the amp I will have to rewire the whole thing, whereas if I run from the HU I can just 'replace' the speakers?

CHEERS YAL.

Bought and delivered! ITS FITTING DAY PEOPLE. Using the door card removal guide for the most of it, not much else on installing as far as I'm aware so if anyones got any tips I'd be happy to hear them!

Does anyone know if I need to rewire the lot?

And is there much difference in running off the HU as apposed to a sub?

Where's the best place to put the sound deadening stuff down?

been looking at speakers and I was going to get either the JL or JBL ones but my question is it a straight swap by cutting the connector off and soldering the wires to the terminals? I have the woofer in the boot and read some where about getting two way components for this type of setup? can the tweeters be used that come with these speakers. I don't have much experience with ice.

The OEM wiring is not great and you will likely have issues with impedance differences IIRC.... At least on fully-amped systems you will.

Get some decent speaker wires and run them to where your speakers are located. Ideally, use an amp to drive the speakers, but a decent HU will also suffice.

I did a full replacement using focal speakers in my old 8L S3 and might to do the same in my current 8P some time next year - OEM stuff is so meh. The only problem is finding a nice stealthy sub replacement for the OEM tupperware box.

I used the stock wiring on mine, just cut the stock plug off and wired in my speaker, got a set of clarion speakers and run them off the head unit with an amped sub in the boot. Very good sound. Need to sound deaden now though as you can hear everything rattle on the outside of the car

Have you fitted these yet buddy?

Do you have any photo's of the finished product? Bar my head unit i'm completely standard in the speaker department and after Christmas i'm looking to change that. I don't want anything crazy but I do like my music.

Thank you.

All fitted yes. Don't think I've got any photos. I can get some photos if you like. What parts are you wanting photos of

Now i've asked the question, I don't actually know what I was looking for. :keule:

What's the sizing on the front speakers and tweeters?
Where they hard to fit, and was there a lot involved?

Thank you!

6.5" for the door. Unsure on the tweeters 1.5"? Peice I **** to fit. Just be careful removing the trim so you don't break anything. You'll need adaptor pods for the door speakers too
