Hello,

I have finally got my concert to MMI 3G High retrofit installed and component protection removed. It took longer than I planned due to the fact I cocked up my home built LVDS cable (main unit to display) and spent weeks troubleshooting before giving up for a bit as I thought my main unit was fubar.

The retrofit includes the DAB radio and AMI mounted in my armrest cubby hole. If you already have the B&O option the installation is not too difficult and I was able to build my own harness rather than splash out on an expensive pre-made one. The cost came in at about £1700, but I hope to get around £400 back on selling off the bits I took out. Most parts came from Ebay, Ebay Germany and Stoke Audi. I've attached a text file of the bits I used. If anyone finds any errors, could they please let me know ;)

Lee.

Well done indeed, it is an involved job, but £1700 is cheap overall, lucky you did all yourself as a full retrofit new etc would be a fair price.

Post pictures!!! Would be great tk have a walk through! :)

When you put it all in, I take it you had to visit Audi to get component protection removed? Did they charge a lot?

Also, the VCDS coding after you installed - was it fairly straightforward and self explanatory?

Charged for 1 hour for component protection removal around £110. (Unfortunately I bought some bits as well so can't remember the exact cost). Probably took less, but there's no real alternative.

Found this site that had lots of useful coding info for the radio, gateway etc:
Seek in ECU database

P77HLP: For an easy life it is probably worth stumping up the cash for the kufatec (Kufatec England) wiring loom for this retrofit. There is loads of info on the web about this. For example:
Trim removal : Trim Removal - Routing wires front to rear - A5_OC
General info: New Audi Owner and Navi Retrofit Project - AudiWorld Forums
Useful video: AUDI A4 A5 Retrofit Concert to 3G navigation.wmv - YouTube
And lots more.

Cheers dude! Much appreciated, found a couple of the 3G low parts online, really do want the 3G with google maps! Do you have the standard sound or did you have to re-wire for fibre optic?

My Concert system was CAN bus so had to install the fibre optic cables, but Main unit to radio and radio to B&O amp communications are done over the fibre optic so cuts down on wiring.

I wanted to do 3G plus but main units are very expensive at the moment. Later I will only need to swap the main unit over to upgrade (I believe :) )

Cheers mate, thanks for the help! Do you know what the part no is for the 3G Plus is? Or where I can look for that part no?

As it's so expensive I'm just going to accumulate the parts and then get it all done with a reverse cam!

Hi Stonefish

I've always hated the fact that the AMI is in the glove box and not the armrest (where it should be)
I've even re-routed a iPod dock extender cable to the armrest on mine and i was looking at an A6 armrest on
ebay to see if I could take the AMI from that. Would you be able to post some pics of the AMI / install?

Great work BTW!

Cheers
Keef

Stonefish (plus any other tech guys that want to chip in)

I'm hoping to do this when I get my new car, but leave the existing AMI connector and cable in place in the glove box so I can put it back to stock if needs be.

So my plan is:-

Remove MMI, unplug existing AMI cable from rear.
Run new cable from MMI down the centre console (removed as per the above link).
Fit new AMI input connector socket in Armrest, either as per your photo or hopefully utilise this new A3 socket
Original Audi A3 S3 8V Externe Audiquelle 8V0035736A Schalter Music Interface | eBay

Anyways, as I've not attempted something like this before, my questions are:-

Did you use the standard cable that would normally run to the glove box, if so, is it long enough to get to the armrest? Also part No.?
I'm assuming that as my car will already have AMI and i am just unplugging one cable and replacing with another, there shouldn't be an issues with coding, errors etc?

Cheers
Keef
Thanks in advance for your help

Hi Keef,

If your car has AMI in the glove compartment and all you want to do is stream music then get yourself an A2DP streaming adapter. A lot less hassle and no need to take the car to bits. It's been done by quite a few people so there should be plenty of info out there.

P.S. I used the kufatec AMI cable which I bought off eBay.

Thanks Stonefish

New car will be able to stream music via BT or Wifi without the adapter.
I just want the AMI in the armrest cos i'm a pedantic ******.

On my current car I re-routed an ipod dock extender cable to the armrest.
So when the new one turns up I just wanted to relocate the AMI to the arm rest.

Cheers

Hi Lee, I did this retrofit a while back and have never been able to get the screen between the rev counter and speedo to work with the 3g+ system did you ever have this problem? I havnt got an option in my green menu under car> for instrument display and apparently it is supposed to be there :s
Marc

If you look around and are willing to use use euro ebay sites then price can be very cheap, my 2G to 3G cost me just over £800 and I've got almost all of that back selling my old 2G hardware. If you already have a 2G setup then the installation is not that difficult, if you have a can based car then you you have to run a couple of extra MOST cables to the back of the car. I did a quick write-up on my A6 http://www.audi-sport.net/vb/a6-s6-...-bit-rebuild-repair-thread-2.html#post2182121

Excellent work mate. Never done the retrofit myself due to the +£2k price tag.

Was it easier than you first thought?
I wouldn't say it was easier than I first thought. Cost really does depend on what system you have to start with, I started off with the concert system. If you have that then you can expect to pay more and make less back, ebay and eBay Germany are your friends on this one. With the concert system you have to install the fibreoptic most canbus. I think it still cost less than 2k with a bit of shopping around and waiting on the right deal.

Hi,

does this install have a sim card slot between the two sd slots ?

Hi, no it doesn't have the SIM card slot.

Marc

When you looked at the upgrade did you look at what was needed to have mobile phone pre Hi ? I have a 3G system with mobile phone prep Low and was trying to find out if I could upgrade this to Hi ??

Anthony

Is it for the data connection? Is it disc based nav or is it internal nav?

We can't get a data connection through Bluetooth because the prep low units don't physically have urns modules in them, I take it you know how to access the green menu and switch on the option for Google earth etc? There is another way to get a data connection via the ami. I have a link to a good tutorial on how to do it on my laptop. I will post up the link once I'm home. From memory you need ami, if you don't have it you can retrofit it, an ami to female usb connection, a low power usb hub, a dlink Ethernet adaptor and a low power router. You will see all this on the tutorial anyway. I havn't done it yet but I might in future.

I was wanting to get the google map data and you cant do that via Bluetooth, I do have AMI installed so I will have a look at the link and see if it can be done that way.

It would be quite nice to have that, it's possible to activate all the menu options for Google maps and remote SIM access profile via Bluetooth, I have all the options in mmi to connect, the mmi can see the phone for audio player, hands-free and when you activate the option for rsap it can see another option 'carphone' I have tried with several different phones and all that happens is when you try to connect you get 'connection failed'. I have since found out that the mmi only uses the SIM for data connection on your phone and not the antenna or 3g protocols.

I have the hidden menu enabled but as I was unable to confirm what needed to be changed to allow this to work I did not make any changes, I did however find details on using your mobile via Bluetooth for calls and the sim in the slot to access the data but you needed MMI Hi and a software upgrade for this to work ...

You can use your mobile as a hands-free device and even download the phonebook from your phone as standard. If you bear with me I will let you know how to activate the software and menu options for the tel prep high and you can have a play around with it and see if you have any luck, I doubt it though, do you have wlan enabled?

Ok thanks ... I do have wlan enabled, my mobile works perfectly on bluetooth wiyh the car .... I just really wanted to see how and what I needed to do to go to mobile prep Hi from low but yhere is nothing around yhat I can find that has that info :(

Olliocity, my retrofit was only the 3G high and so my standard instrument cluster worked OK with my head unit. The 3G plus might need an instrument cluster upgrade too?? There's a 3G plus retrofit on the Audizine forum might be some info there.

jb0o, the install was easier than I thought as it was mostly popping off trim and running cables around the car. The hardest part was finding out all the correct bits needed. I spent a couple of months researching the job and accumulating all the bits. It would probably be cheaper now as more bits are becoming available especially on eBay Germany.

Sorry for the delay, heres the link to how to get a data connection via the ami...

Thanks Lee, I was hoping that it might have just been a coding issue, I wouldnt like to take a guess modding the coding because it can do more damage than good, i suppose I could live without the DIS.

Anthony I still have to look into the options that you need to change to enable the tel prep high menu options, I'll get to it as soon as I can.

Does anyone have a complete list of parts from concert 3 to 3g+ plan to read some other threads just thought I'd ask if anyone had any lists

Hi stonefish. Could you please help me with vcds coding for my mmi 3g? I just retrofit it and just need the coding and after the coding i will bring my car to audi for the component protection removal

My MMI is the 8T2 035 666 unit and my coding is 01010100010684CC00000F0C000000030001
You will need to VCDS to change some of the options depending on the spec of your car.
