AdamZA's S5 Sportback Waiting Thread! UPDATE. 40 HOURS TO COLLECTION. 8/8/2014 ...

Can't believe you're going to put yourself through it after all we've had to suffer, but then if you're a stickler for detail then it's the only way.

Good colour & wheel choices so I'm really looking forward to what this car will look like.

Good on you San for providing the soundtrack to our waits!

Hey Warren, i enjoy music, love to share my varied taste with you all, im leaving the classical stuff for you to provide, as it just does nothing for me. I love doing countdowns, i was juggling with 13 in the a3 8v section for the guys collecting their 63 plates. It was an awesome challenge, but i really enjoyed it. :) x

Well i hope you like this one. Its one of my favourites.

I do indeed! I like most genres of music especially stuff with a good beat but my music library is somehow still narrow. Never discovered enough artists!

I agree the wait is killer... But the good thing about this is that I at least get to keep my S5 until the new one arrives. Makes it much easier.

The thing is, if you were to see the car in person you'd be just as mortified as I am - it looks half decent in a picture but when the light shows up all those swirls which are now on every single panel and also the scratches they inflicted and the holograms from a rushed one stage machine polish... Well let's just say I almost prefer the car dirty rather than clean. If it was a used car I'd accept it comes with age but sorry, I'm not accepting this on a new car!

Adam - just had a look at the pics you posted above and have to see that is atrocious! On mine now there is the odd mark here and there from washing (may have been a one time dealer wash that I didn't ask for, could have been me) but at the distance you've taken the pics you'd struggle to pick them out, what they've done to yours... well I've no idea really does look like it's taken a good battering and would wonder if it could be saved at all!

Sure it could be but I can see why you decided to reject and re-order.

I think you might be right about Sepang with the non-BE chrome trim, think it does work slightly better.

Happy waiting. ;) :p

I'm not sure if I mentioned it clearly or not - but yeah I've effectively ordered a black edition without the black styling pack as I think the chrome highlights will work well with the Sepang. Black looks nice but as it is the S5 gets the same bumper as the rest of the A5 range. At least without the Black Styling Pack it regains the chrome/grey front grille and some flair. If you buy a red or white etc S5 then black edition definitely but for a black or dark blue car I think the contrast will look better.

Ahh right ...... I had a similar dilemma when ordering and then after ordering my S5.

I really liked the chrome grille on the front of the car but was not so keen on the chrome window cappings ... but you could not have one without the other.

I ordered the car with chrome in the end.

Then saw Shrek's car and decided I wanted black edition - but was then told if I did that delivery would extend by 2 months.

So then just went with black pack - which kept delivery the same.

Couple weeks later was told delivery was going to be extended by 2 months regardless ! ... so then got my order changed to black edition FOC as compensation for the late delivery so all worked out quite well.

So yeah I do really like the grille in chrome - but also really like it in black too.

Chrome looks classy - black looks meaner IMO.

It was chrome on my TTS also though, so going black at least it was different.

So ......

Could you just make the grille chrome and leave the window cappings in gloss black .. that would be cool otherwise chrome cappings will still look great against the sepang I agree !

Only thing I could do is have the window cappings wrapped in gloss black. I will see how I feel when I pick up the car.

First let it be built - delivery feels like it will be next decade!

I, for some reason, think the chrome window cappings suit the sportback more than the coupe... What do you think?

Hmmm that is a good point actually - the sportback angle !

Check out both the S7 and S5 sportback here and yeah the chrome window cappings work.

For me the reason is .... the none black edition alloys.

Having silver alloys makes the window cappings and wing mirrors compliment each other and does look good on a 4 door car.

Yeah actually I think it maybe does look better, more so because of the wheels for me.

You are getting the new 20" ers yeah ?

Yep new 20" alloys - otherwise I would like the black edition alloys too. To be honest I want the wheels from the RS7 (21") but please if you show me an RS7 I will start having inappropriate dreams

Wow ..... just something about the RS7 I really like, albeit on some angles it can look a bit urm weird ?

How can you be really drawn to a car but then say it looks strange from some angles.

They look mega imposing when you see one too as they are sooooooooo wide :)

Those pics REALLY / SERIOUSLY show how good sepang blue is ... possibly the best Audi colour ever IMO !

I've still not seen a good picture of the new 20" wheels - only on the Audi Configurator - so I'm hoping for the best. They look ok but my current wheels really suit the car.

I completely agree with what you're saying about the A7/S7/RS7 - from some angles it looks amazing, from others it looks like it was designed blindfolded! I think once you're familiar with the car, the engine and everything that makes a car like the RS7, you can't not love it - or at least respect it.

I'm on such a Sepang hype (as I should be!) I remember before purchasing my Estoril, I was looking on another Audi forum with lots of Estoril pictures and I was thinking 'yep this colour is really good!' then BAM someone posts some shots of a new S3 in Sepang and I just thought damn... At one point I was considering factory ordering a Sepang car using the Audi Individual option... now that would have cost an arm, a leg and a testicle!

My previous car was a Space Grey E92 BMW:

IMG 1880 new

IMG 1914

It was a beautiful colour - reflected light so nicely. But I had bought it as an ex demo and sacrificed the exterior colour for the interior - it had Oyster leather with piano black inlays and it was very high spec. I had always wanted Le Mans Blue:

Which ultimately made me switch cars. I'm so happy that with this new Sepang S5 I won't have to compromise one bit! (Estoril was a bit of a compromise really...)

If I was you ... I would be hyped up about getting sepang too BIG TIME ! :)

So yeah, you enjoy the build up to getting this amazing car in such a stunning colour.

Bimmer - agreed - had one myself in 2006, a 330i m sport - it was a dark grey with some purple hue in it, can't remember the name of it though. It had a superb straight six engine. The le mans blue was available at the time but I was just changing from a bad experience Nissan 350z which was blue so that is why I did not go blue again.

I do recall the Bimmer being highly resistant to stone chips though.

Mine seemed to be as well. Plain red cleaned up so well!

On the RS7, there's something very 'UFO' about the 7 range, i can just picture Ed Straker jumping out of one, or dodging a UFO on the highway...

I think I only got literally two stone chips in my 2.5 years of owning the car - that paint was brilliant. Highly resistant to swirls as well.

So Statler - I'm interested: why did you decide to switch from BMW to Audi?

Very nice - can just about see the purple hue. Looks quite good!

Why did you switch to Audi, Snake?

I want to see if our reasons all line up!

I think it may have been called cosmic grey.

At the time, I switched from a Nissan 350z which was driving me mad from a quality perspective (which I won't go into).
Needed a quality car desperately and had always wanted a BMW so timing fitted and the car and spec was perfect and the quality and performance ticked all the boxes.

I only grew bored of its looks - being a 4 door car ... it did not help when the coupe came out approx 6 months after I got it :(

I traded it 1.5 years later (March 2008) for the car which then really did tick ALL the boxes: my 1st Audi TT 3.2 litre V6 ... this had all the quality of the Bimmer, even more performance and the looks I craved - Haven't got a picture handy but will try and dig one out.

Biggest problem with the Bimmer was "depreciation" .. found out as they are high volume company cars as a private buy they will lose you a pocket if you are a private buyer buying brand new - which I did.

So this experience out me off and tbh after having quattro for the last 7 years I would struggle to go back to rear wheel drive from a safety POV.

So Statler - I'm interested: why did you decide to switch from BMW to Audi?

Back about 1993 I bought an Audi 80 Sport 8v. It literally was the best car I've ever had, I just didn't realise it at the time...
I swapped to a 520i SE and regretted it every one of the 90 days I owned it... swapped to a Vauxhall Calibra 16v then got a sharp telling off from the local Magistrate for having a heavy left foot.

That set us back to one car and when I did expand to two cars it was a 316i SE and this began a 15 year journey in BMW.

Back when kids were young and I had more time, I moderated on e36coupe.com for a few years and so it brings me to now.

I needed 4 wheel drive and space for Ice Hockey kits, BMW tried to get me into a 320d touring but the boring interior and lack of toys just didn't fire me, the A5 Sportback did!

So here I am... you did ask! (Where's Piers Morgan when you need him ;-) )

Here's the e92

Big red

Biggest problem with the Bimmer was "depreciation" .. found out as they are high volume company cars as a private buy they will lose you a pocket if you are a private buyer buying brand new - which I did.

I bought the e92 at 14 months old and after 4 years in it I think it held up pretty well. Choosing your model wisely helps, I think saloons drop quicker than coupes..

Now, the Saab was different story altogether, £10K drop in 12 months...

It's really interesting to hear your experiences. Snake - I don't think I could really be happy having a saloon. Unless going for a new 5 series, A6 etc or 7 series, A8, I don't see any real benefit over a hatchback - you loose the practicality of the hatchback and don't get that much more space inside. The styling of saloons just doesn't appeal to me either.

It's interesting you speak of depreciation and what you say does make a lot of sense - you bought the common business saloon (no offence!), albeit in a stunning colour, and unfortunately market value doesn't assess cars very individually! I agree with Statler - the coupes hold value much better than the saloons - even the 320d.

I've not had a chance to drive a TT but I know the quality is high and I'm sure the driving experience is really good - though if you're talking about the engine I think you are, Audi hadn't cracked the secret of how to really use the potential of the V6 - though it left the car very tuneable?

I agree Quattro 4WD is a great system - I never struggle for grip and the car manages the power really well. It does detract from the fun of going slightly sideways but makes up for it in safety and performance. I do miss the back kicking out when I decided to be a bit silly though!

Statler, there is a Lithuanian import Audi 80 sat outside my neighbours house :p it seems abandoned for weeks. You want? :p

The newest BMWs have so many toys but I'm surprised that they all cost more than the Audi equivalents. I specced up a 4-series grand coupe and it was £8k more for the same options as my S5 Sportback!

I found the interior of my E92 to be well designed - on the facelift they made a few interior changes - including placement of the AC controls etc and it felt like a drivers car and had a premium, stylish and classy feel to it. By contrast, the S5's interior is nice but its all too functional and not enough beauty. There are too many MMI buttons and the system isn't as intuitive as BMW and this is the only compromise I think.

In terms of build quality, I think Audi is ahead of BMW in this range - Audi has a more premium feel with more expensive materials. Even my A3 was really well made and I always missed this in my BMW. The S5 is no disappointment and these super sports seats are amazing. I couldn't get comfortable in the standard A5 seats for some reason - after my 24 hour test drive in the 3.0 TDi I had neck pain and I really don't know why! Maybe I hadn't hit the sweet spot for the seat settings.

I moved back to Audi for a good few reasons really. Firstly, I've never been able to stay in a car for too long - something my wallet hates me for. I also got tired of seeing Space Grey. As it is London is so bland in the built up areas with no colour! I missed having a blue car. I also wanted something more comfortable - even though I'm quite young, the M Sport suspension on the E92 was really uncomfortable and I was on 19" run flat tyres. The S5 is so much more comfortable and thats saying something considering its on the sports suspension and 20" wheels. It was also the point in the finance where there was equity in the part ex value and I thought 4 doors with a hatchback that looks as stunning as the A5/S5 does would be perfect. The 4 series grand coupe wasn't out yet, was more expensive and was uglier IMO. I was going to move to the A5 3.0 TDi which made good financial sense: cheaper insurance, cheaper road tax, better efficiency and economy - but the lure of owning an S5 was too great. My mistake was indulging in a test drive. I became addicted to that engine note and the super sports seats and as a result I've ended up with higher insurance, higher road tax, much worse efficiency and economy but with a V6 supercharged beast :p my budget may not allow for this kind of car in the future so here I am - enjoying every minute of driving it and trying my best to ignore the economy :p

With my replacement being factory ordered, it could be the car I keep for a long long time so long as my budget allows it!

Hope you all enjoyed that essay! :D

The cost of the 4GC shocked me compared with the A5. They nearly had me in a 3 GT but lack of 320d/x-Drive combo blew it.
Agree on the suspension on the e92 although swapping to normal Vredestien tyres made a huge difference.

I've had a drive out in a Sportback 2wd and a coupe Quattro, both 2.0TDi and am impressed with the Sport suspension comfort. I considered the S-Line suspension, but the dealer has only ever had one of these through and I couldn't risk a chance in case I hit the BMW hardness again.

As an old guy, my back took six months to adjust to the BMW sport seats after the Saab, but I slotted right into the S-Line seat without issue so I'm hoping for that to continue..

Not sure on the 80, I think I'd like to keep the memory intact and not spoil it :) Anyway, I've an MG Midget sitting forlornly in the garage. It needs a bit of attention next!

I was going to go for the S-Line suspension and not the sports suspension if I went with the A5 and not the S5. For a car costing this amount of money, comfort is expected. I test drove the 4 series coupe and while it was a bit more comfortable it just wasn't good enough to justify the change. Glad you managed to adjust to the S-Line seats very easily. Not sure what my problem was!

I don't think you'd want the Audi 80 anyway :p doesn't look that well cared for!

I'm curious about the active dampeners on the A5/S5 - they adjust the stiffness but not the ride height? I hope the car sits nicely on the wheels as I don't want it to look like a 4x4! I remember reading in Warren's thread that he thought the car was sitting a bit high and hoped it would settle. I don't know if this is to do with the active dampeners? Or if he even has the active dampeners! I'm hoping for a noticeable difference in driving comfort when I switch from the sports suspension. It's interesting because on the Audi configurator, the dampeners replace the suspension option. Can anyone clear this all up and tell me what I can expect, please?

A few points above :)

bullet points for me .........

Agreed - 4 door saloon was a bad purchase decision, in hindsight it was wrong but then a coupe was not available - until 6 months later d'oh ! :)

Could not fault the quality, drive, engine, comfort, performance & sound of that straight six though !

Other than the financial loss, it feels a better car now looking back than I gave it credit for at time ... somehow ?

Had it been a coupe, I am sure I would have liked it a lot longer - the red coupe above looks much nicer and has the 19" rims too

Once you experience quattro though, I don't think there is any going back .. I would take some convincing to go back to rear wheel drive in particular - more so because of the bad winters we had in recent years - quattro won't save you but it will keep you going a lot further than rear wheel drive.

Re the active suspension -I did not bother with this but had magnetic ride on the TTS.

If you do a lot of miles or are into thrashing round country lanes then it would benefit you.

You can stiffen up the suspension to almost rock hard levels - capable of taking you round the Nurburbring with ease or make it soft and spongy for ultra comfort - I believe the middle setting most leave it on as the best compromise 'day to day'.

It does not affect your ride height though.

Warren likes his wheels sitting out at the edge of the wheelarch and has added spacers.

I'm not sure about them tho, I think this adds to the look of extra wheel arch gap as there is no overhang 'shadow' that standard cars have, as the wheels sit back in slightly. I saw an S5 in the dealership last week and it looked grand.

I think the combination of the bigger wheels and possibly the suspension would have affected ride quality - I wonder if they use the same suspension in the saloon and the coupe... I test drove the 435i and, unfortunately, I was unimpressed with the engine. Coming from the E92 which was a 300bhp diesel, there wasn't enough torque and horsepower just didn't make up for it. The main problem for me though is I was expecting it to sound amazing and it just... didn't. But when I drove the S5, the engine note - whether in sport or drive - was just more exciting and sounded like a V6 should. I can't comment on the e90 or e90 330i - I never had a chance to drive the 330i or 335i.

Thanks for clearing up the active dampeners confusion - to be honest, I will have it on comfort for the majority of the time. On my daily commute I don't need the sportiness and if I shift into dynamic mode it will sort all that out anyway. Glad it doesn't affect road height though I would suppose that would be better for comfort. Maybe I should learn about the mechanics of a car :)

Hmm Statler you just raise the question of how to customise this car when it finally arrives! I'm not dissatisfied with the S5 Sportback except for the fact that the front bumper is too subdued - doesn't look mean enough anymore. But even though I'm not dissatisfied, it's always nice to make your car more unique by adding some finishing touches. I have a couple of ideas for the car which I will have a think about after it arrives.

In a perfect world (my idea of it), wheels should sit flush with the outer edge of the arches, and there should be a largely equidistant gap around all of the wheel / arch. To me that would be perfect set up.

Something a bit like this.

S5

I can't bear wheels being tucked away under arches, but when you've just shelled out for a nigh on £50k car with full electronic dampers you don't feel like ripping them out and lowering it and knackering the adaptive dampers you've just paid for!

We had a brief discussion on ride of the S5 a week or so ago and it is something that alters dependent on the angle you view the car.

Looking at the car from the side IMO the ride height does look a 'touch' too high - not a lot but a few mm.

However, if you then start walking to the rear of the car and then look at the arches from a sharper angle, the right height looks spot on and appears to fill the arch gaps perfectly.

My TTS with mag ride was shod with 19" rims ... might as well have a pic of that too now :)

This only had two modes - standard or sport so it was always active in one form or another.

Sport was MEGA stiff and almost undrivable on regular roads as the car was so stiff - it was for circuit driving or tearing round country lanes or roundabouts :)

In standard, it was stiff but supple but it was quite a firm ride still.

My S5 with regular / conventional suspension is not as hard a ride as the TTS but it is still nicely firm and copes with uneven roads and bumps much much better.

I think you will find the 20" rims with adaptive suspension fine - it will be very firm but if you want it to be but at least with you having multiple settings you can adapt it more for the driving conditions at hand.

I do agree and the pic you posted would be my ideal as well, but as ever, practicality and British roads take over!
I guess it's personal preference, you do what you want and if it works for you that's all that matters :)
That said, on my last set of winter wheels the offset was for an e36 so they looked like they were sitting on the transmission tunnel....

How's this for arch gap and inset... 'scuse the bad photchop.

I guess I will have to see how I feel when driving the car. I guess I'm just anxious for it's arrival and want to figure it all out beforehand!

I may end up setting an individual profile just to tweak it to my liking - does this change the gear selector on the dashboard to I instead of D? I can't remember from the model that I test drove.

Also, I'm wondering RE the exhaust & engine noise: When in dynamic mode, is the only change in the noise from the soundaktor or is there a flap that opens in the exhaust as well? Basically, am I the only one hearing the 'improved' sound in the cabin? I need to pull that fuse and see what I think...
