Exhaust flaps (S3) - modify?

Mine's still unplugged
I want more sound now ;)

Take it you still haven't come across any warning lights, have you found a way to get rid of the fault message on vcds?

Couldn't agree more! Wish there were other ways to make it louder without having to change the system, might have to go for a milltek soon...

No errors and can always plug them back in easy enough and clear the faults with vcds

Gotta admit that mine is getting a bit louder with every mile driven now, 500 miles in and the drone i had on the motorway was loud enough! I must be getting old.
P.s using shell nitro only

My wife mentioned that the other day too - she tends to only be in the car at the weekends and we were a bit late so we're pushing on a bit and she commented on how it was seeming to rumble a bit more now it's getting miles on it. 2.3k miles now.

Is it possible someone could put some pics of the connectors etc on here so I know what I'm aiming for when mine comes?

Def want to do this mod.

no probs and be very difficult to photograph. have a feel around, you won't be able to miss them!

I actually disconnected mind a week ago and initially didn't notice any difference but I'm loving it now, good rasp in higher gears between 1200 and 2500rpm and no problems as yet!!

Quick question as I don't want to brake anything. To remove the connection for the exhaust flaps, do you just push down on the black clip at the top and pull it back?

Cheers

Ok, have unplugged them and put some electrical tape over the end and plugged it back in. Obviously it won't go in all the way so have put some tape around it to keep it on place. What has everyone else done as I'm pretty sure as soon as they get wet the tape will come off.

Can definitely hear the difference though :)

I'm going to do mine Sunday - just haven't had chance to do it yet.

Been sunning myself if the south of France since I picked up my S3 but back Saturday :p

Haha nice. I'm off to Abu Dhabi for two weeks on Saturday (for work ) so trying to get as much driving in as I can. Going to try and find something a bit more suitable than tape as I'm scared it will come off, then the connectors will get full of crap.

I'm hoping to put a few miles on when I get back - just not had a chance to drive it which has been a bit of a killer after 5 months of waiting for it. Might actually leave doing this mod so I can appreciate the difference after driving it with the normal exhaust sound.

Think i read on the Golf R forum that people were putting couple of small strips of electrical tape inside the connector and then re-installing so sealed. The tape prevented electrical connection etc.

Enjoy Abu Dhabi

I don't suppose you can post where the plugs are so that I can give this a go too?

It's quite easy to see if you have a look under the car,

You just push down on the clip and pull them out. Mine didn't come to easily, think that was just because they are a bit tricky to get to unless you can get under the car.

I reversed 1 wheel up onto the pavement, was a bit easier to get to then.

The problem is what you do with them once unplugged.

Thanks. I figure electrical tape or something similar should do the job. S3 going into Audi to have a look at a weird stutter when accelerating from cold so will wait until it comes back to have a better look. This at the back of the car presumably?

Hello

I saw someone took out the sound actuator from a GTI mk7.
The question is if we take out this part it makes sound like it is open all the time?

^ That is the soundaktor, situated under the scuttle panel at the front of the car.

Completely different to the exhaust flaps in the tailpipes.

Is it basically a speaker to give the impression of a louder engine/exhaust?

Is it artificial if it just amplifies whats already there?

The soundaktor itself doesn't generate any noise. It just replicates whatever is fed to it, in this case, there is a separate Soundaktor ECU. What that ECU generates nobody quite knows.

Call it an enhancement.

I guess there is no such thing as artificial sound anyway. What is it amplifying though? I don't know enough but get the impression its not amplifying in the traditional sense but generating the sound (which is output through the glass)

Any more updates from those that have done this mod?

I have had this done since day 1, no issues at all. It shows up an open circuit when you scan with VCDS but once you plug them back in you can just clear them.
Sounds nice around the 2000rpm mark.

It was a wee bit droney around 80 on the motorway, so I plugged mine back it. Made talking to rear passengers difficult.
