Hi guys :)

I have a s3 and im looking to add a little bit more power to the car. I have read about the remaps that you can get from the various companies and the downsides such as the clutch going due to being pants to begin with. I have done some research via google and it seems that the itg maxogen is the best induction kit for gains. The reviews/ topics ive viewed are on stage 2 cars mainly due to restrictive oem air box. My question is if I put this induction kit on my standard car which runs on shell 99 will I see a difference? I plan at a later date to put a milltek cat back system on the car to help the breathing slightly too. I don't expect a massive difference unless the car was mapped to take advantage of these mods but I believe the ecu will adapt to a certain extent? in standard form the car feels like it is out of puff by 4500rpm and im hoping the induction will help with this.

thanks in advance

The best current intakes are the Revo,AMD and ITG.

On a non mapped car you will get a bit more but not much whereas a remap and exhaust will enable you to get a lot more from the car.

thanks for the quick reply. well I bought a superchips stage 1 map the other day and wasn't impressed, I didn't feel a difference. I have read threads on here about dyno readings after the map etc and how Bluefin have sent new maps through to the customers so that my next step tomorrow but not sure if it will make enough of a noticeable difference. I thought maybe my car standard has quite a high bhp in stock form hence not much difference, this is why im thinking of just an induction kit and exhaust eventually and that way I have not clutch issues etc.

thanks

The best thing to do to the car for performance is the remap - accompanied along with an intake, exhaust and fuel pump makes a very fast car!

My old S3 was Revo 2+ with revo intake, FMIC, miltek exhaust and autotech pump - made around 350-60bhp

I had to change my clutch but it is part and parcel with modifying the car - will cost around £1000 to do.

You may see some gains with the 99ron fuel and intake but marginal compared to the remap. Put them all together and you will notice a significant difference.

Pretty much what I've got now.
Tried a bluefin wasn't impressed
Got Revo stage 1 added a pump then intake then downpipe.
Uprated my clutch as my flywheel was knackered and got Revo stage 2+ yesterday and now it's very quick.

I take it you only had the cat back then for £400+ ye? I would have thought for stage 2 you would need the full exhaust no? thats over 1k on its own isnt it?

Stg2+ is good fun isn't it!

Best overall bang for buck S3 upgrade.

Yeah its fun alright.
The way it pulls all the way to red line is amazing. When you think your using it all and push the pedal the last bit it goes even more.
Running timing 5 just now but when the weather cools if again I'll be going timing 6 again.
Can't wait.

Thanks for the replies guys. The thing that scares me is the clutch going quickly. I have not long bought the car and dont have 1k to spend on a clutch just yet. I have read 09+ cars have stronger clutches but no one seems to have a definitive answer to that.

Thanks

Yes the later model S3's have a Sachs clutch as standard......as the earlier ones were made of cheese. I dont know how much uprated they are if at all but they seem to be able to cope with extra power that remapping brings alot easier than the earlier models. Im not stating that an newer model wont need a clutch though as always budget for a new one when considering a remap for your S3.

Thank you for the reply. I was sent another map this morning from superchips and its a massive improvement from the original. These are my finding with it now -

below 3k rpm you can feel it gets going just that little bit earlier than in standard form and you can change gear earlier and ride the torque, if you didn't drive the car on a daily basis I don't think you would notice.
3k rpm+ the map becomes a lot more noticeable and seems to be a balance between aggressive and linear if that makes sense.

All in all I am happy with the revisions that have been made where as before I was very unhappy (I understand that this is a generic map though). The customer service was excellent and its just a shame that they are not available to help on Saturdays if you need them.

My only question now is, is it beneficial to add a ITG panel filter? I have read that the standard paper one is good for 300bhp and a K&N one actually made the car lose bhp, is this still the case?

Thanks for all the replies ive had so far and as for the clutch only time will tell I suppose :)

I can personally recommend a Revo Air Intake if you want more power. Along with all the other modifications above it will go well, and have a great induction sound.

Panel filters are frankly next to worthless.

A good CAI such as the Revo,AMD or ITG will make a difference.

right ok then thanks for the info i'll save for the revo one then, will the map need to be tweaked or will the ECU be able to cater for just adding an induction kit?

thanks

Im in exactly the same boat as you bud with not wanting anything to go wrong with my car or blow the engine/clutch etc.
I couldn't afford to fix it if it went pop just now ;/

Yet Ive only had the car 3 weeks and have already had it remapped to stage 1, coilovers going on tomorrow, pipercross panel filter installed, and a Revo cold air induction kit is in transit to me :)

Next will be the Forge divertor valve, and if I can ever afford it is the Milltek exhaust! Catback back box will be first as couldn't afford the whole exhaust in one go.

Then a stage 2 Remap :-D

Hi mate,
I cant afford to fix anything at the moment either but this is due to me buying audi extended leather bits for the car and the remap. I did some searching tonight and apparently a after market downpipe and sports cat can be mated to the orginal back box and you still get 90% of the gains but when you move to stage 2 a clutch is pretty much a must and fitted your looking at £1250.
My next step is a revo cai and see what I think when that's on the car, how much did you pay? I've always spent thousands on mods on every car i've had and swore this time was different haha.

I am considering fitting a Pipewerx down pipe and de-cat to my OEM cat back exhaust. After seeing a comparison picture of the cat back sections there is very little difference that will effect performance for Stage 2 and 2+.

Nice pic Dan shows comparison, plenty of advice on this forum saying biggest befit is to change the down pipe and cat. The rear section hs shiny tips but doesn't do much for performance unless you going over stage 2+. Check my thread for a pic of the restrictive front down pipe. I'm going BCS pipe and 200 cell sports cat. Comes with an adapter to mate with OEM rear section.

Well, ive just spent the entire afternoon with a friend fitting some new coilovers and a new Revo cold air induction kit!
I am overwhelmed by the difference the induction kit has had! I was actually late for work due to having to drive around the block again because i couldnt get over the sound of her !!! As soon as you take your foot off the throttle, you get a fantastic release of gas and the sound is fantastic :) Sooooo happy! :) Feels a bit quicker too but ill have to check that out tomorrow as was late for work to give her a proper test!!

The Revo air intake increases MAF readings by 20 g/s which is roughly 16 bhp, so you should notice a difference, and definitely agree with you about the induction noise. Go and find a tunnel and boot it through.

great info above thanks. I think the induction kit and the exhaust mods are the next step and a final tune and then I will be happy I think....or hope.

I thought I'd be done at Revo Stage 1 with air intake, but knowing there is more power available for very little money I already have plans for Stage 2 this summer, and Stage 2+ over winter.

Why not go for Stg2+ in the summer.....it's great fun.

I like to enjoy each power increase for a bit first before going all out, and festival season has started, not to mention holiday season too.

Have fun with it!

I think its better to spend all now so its up to stage 2+ then you know the expensive parts over and done with and then you can save !.. well at least try....

Depends how much cash you have I suppose! If I was loaded id put a supercharger on her too lol

Around the same as my GTX3076R,so about £1500 all in,but it's what you need afterwards that really costs.

The manifolds, injectors,LP fuel pumps, extra injectors and ECUs,WMI,and the list goes on.......

You made it sound lovely until I read that second line! haha

This sounds like me
I bought mine last October telling myself I'll leave it standard.
By December I'd installed a bluefin stage 1 map, January Revo stage 1
February Loba hpfp
March AMD intake
April Loba downpipe and Milltek catback
May sachs clutch kit and stage 2+
Makes an extremely lively car and bags of fun.

Really? I asked this question on this forum maybe a month or so ago, and people said there was no difference in the clutches! But it makes sense what you are saying, because I have had no issues with my clutch at all, and I have been running Revo Stage 1 now with Revo CAI and Loba Fuel Pump for a while. My car is 2009. I would say I will have to upgrade it shortly, as I plan on going stage 2+, but touch wood no issue at all so far, for all the bad rep these clutches get.

What kind of Golf? Sounds like it could have been modified as well. Also are you manual or auto? And how good a driver are you...lol
