Hi
i have just had diag done on A6 2.0 tdi multitronic and it came up with no electrical faults so I'm looking at a new gearbox, I've been quoted £6500 from Audi and £3300 from a transmission specialist for a remanufactured one, could anyone give me some advice as I don't know what to do???

Ouch, that is going to sting, and I feel for you... facing having to spend almost 50% of the worth of the vehicle to repair it is galling to say the least :(

Who diagnosed it, out of interest? If it was an Audi dealership, then there may be a chance you could still repair rather than replace, as they immediately trotted out the "6 grand to replace" approach on my old A4... they are always big fans of replacing everything rather than spending time troubleshooting and only replacing what is necessary. Did they drop the fluid from the box and find horrible metal shavings, or was it just a case of PRNDS on the dash and "computer says no"?

If you can speak to an actual specialist who knows about repairing multitronics (see my other reply), they may give you an idea of whether it may still be repairable. If it is just the controller, you may get away with a bill of only £1K rather than 6! Being undriveable makes things more of a pain, as you can't just pop elsewhere for a second diagnostic, but trucking it a few hours away and repairing is still going to be cheaper than a new box.

When my multi crapped out, it opened my eyes bigtime, and I ended up doing a lot of research, and then traded up for something with a much better reliability record.

Whatever course you decide on, I can offer this: If it were me, and it were repairable, I would fix it and then get ****** rid of it! If a replacement was the only option, I would go with reconditioned, and then consider very seriously getting ****** rid of it!

it was an Audi independant specialist who did it, he said it wasnt showing anything wrong electrically so therefore it must be mechanical. i spoke to a couple of transmission companies who both said they would probably just replace it so i dont really know who to talk to now or wheather to get it fixed, if i do get it fixed it will be fir sale the next day!!!

Hi Chris

I just lost power, no drive in any gear, havnt got the flashing light fault it just started to judder when coming to a stop but this only happened twice and it was quite violent. Now, it starts and ticks over perfectly but when i put it in D,S or R it doesnt go into gear.
thats pretty much it

I would get a good second hand box and drop that it, they usually come with a short warranty and would be the cheapest way to get you on the road.
You could take your old one to a gearbox place and get them to quote you on a repair or just sell it as spares / repair.

Karl.

I've spoke to one company who said they could do a remanufactured box for £4k
So I think I'll start saving

Thanks though
Adam

Have you checked ebay for a replacement box, should get one cheaper than £3K.
