Video in motion...........

No. Not in this country anyway.

What's the justification for charging so much now then, given you have more than made your money back?

It not legal in the uk.

But so is speeding but we all still do it from time to time

Its my Job. I mod Audi's for a living. But as the hardware was very expensive I have yet to actually recuperate my initial outlay.

Yes the MMI has to be fully reflashed, not something that can be done with VCDS, otherwise it would be a lot cheaper and easier!

It is not legal in the country and is for demo purposes only.

At least when you are going faster than the speed limit you are looking where you are going and not being distracted by a screen.

What about speeding and watching a DVD ;)

Now that would be stupid. Even driving slowly and watching a DVD is stupid and shows a total disregard for other road users.

Personally I enjoy driving far too much to want to be distracted by watching a DVD.

I'm only joking. I'd never be that irresponsible.
I don't even think my car plays videos!

Ok so spawning off the back of this thread I am hopefully getting a dongle manufactured that will automatically do what you need it to do... Activate VIM.

I know the way AP does his VIM and what cable / files it uses and also the price of said articles. I can confirm its not done via VCDS.

Sorry, but I have to chime in and give a bit of a rant on this. If you're activating it to keep the kids or your passenger entertained while you concentrate on driving on the road, sure, go ahead and activate it.

If you're activating it so you can watch a movie while you're driving, I couldn't think of a stupider thing you could do. Sorry. Straight up.

I lost a very good friend last year because of this exact reason: some idiot in a VW with a RNS510 system enabled VIM, was watching a movie, veered into the opposing lane, and hit my friend head on at 70kph. Dead on impact.

Don't be a complete idiot. There is zero reason for you to need to watch The Bourne Legacy while driving to work. I'd love to see how you felt if you had lost someone as a result of this, or been on the receiving end of it.

Wouldn't it just be easier, cheaper and safer to get a cheap tablet and headphones? That's what my daughter does for long drives.

For videos I agree as I think having video on the MMI whilst driving is dangerous.

However, one of the original reasons for this in a similar thread from many months ago was to see if it could be used to mirror phone screen output e.g. For a SatNav app.

You're spot on with this...

Even if it is for passenger use it's still illegal and that's why anytime you fit or activate this function you are in part responsible that the user knows that it is for Off-Road Use only. We make every single one of our customers know this and that by purchasing it they are agreeing to our statement of use.

If a cop pulled you over whilst driving with VIM activated he's got you bang to rights.

It's all about being smart and having your head screwed on. We all know that speeding is illegal but majority of drivers have probably gone over the limit at some point in their life. Driving isn't a right, it's a responsibility.

I agree completely. Even it's done so that a passenger can watch something whilst the car is 'in motion' it is still more than possible the driver will get distracted at some point. If a passenger cannot bear to be in the car without some to watch you should install a video playing screen in the back so that it is not in sight of the driver.

'for demo purposes'.....dont make me laugh.

i am surprised that this thread is still active as it illustrates a complete disregard for the law whilst putting lives of law abiding road users at unnecessary risk and to add insult someone is making money from this.

Surely the forum moderators cant support such work?

We don't Lou, in fact from a road safety perspective we're vehemently against unlocking VIM.

There are enough day to day distractions in cars with phones, social media, sat nav, gadgets etc., and as has been proven time and time again people who are distracted in cars risk the lives of themselves, but more importantly innocent folk whether they be pedestrians, cyclists or other road users.

A car in the wrong hands is a leather weapon, and we've already got enough distracted a******es with appalling driving standards on our roads to cause us concern. Therefore forum members should think twice about enabling this for ANY reason, and companies selling products to support this should be guiding people based on an ethical viewpoint and think of the worst case scenarios before endorsing it.

Personally I think anyone carrying out work to allow Video in Motion should be prosecuted. Car makers have to, by law, make it such that video cannot be played when it's the sight of the driver and the vehicle is moving. This is an obviously sensible rule. If a car did not have this set-up it would not get EU Type Approval. Any organisation that is deliberately 'getting round' this ruling is, in my opinion, at the least being very irresponsible and may even be breaking the law. Anyone who drives a car where this has been done is also breaking the law as they are knowingly driving a car that no longer complies with it's EU Type Approval and is therefore not legally allowed to be driven on the roads in the UK.

A good position is taken by this company. Others should follow their example. Video In Motion

Perhaps, as a forum, we should consider suspending anyone who does this work or anyone who says that they have had it done to their car.

I don't believe that vehicle type approval has anything to do with the motoring laws in the UK Dave, European Community Whole Vehicle Type Approval It is just to ensure a process to provide a mechanism for ensuring that vehicles meet relevant environmental, safety and security standards when they are built. If you take the view that a vehicle modification breaks a law on type approval then just about anything would be illegal, such as lowering the suspension, remaps, spacers and exhausts etc.
I know that to have the ability to have a movie displayed where the driver can see it is illegal in this county, and for good reasons, as so is holding a mobile phone, but still drivers break them.

I must admit I'm no expert of EU Vehicle Type Approval but as I understand the situation before any vehicle can be legally driven on the roads in the UK it has to has this approval. The approval is an accepted method of testing and once carried out it means any vehicle with a Type Approval can be used on the roads of any EU country and the system does away with the need for each individual country to carry out it's own individual test on each new vehicle.

A VCA documnet says:

The European approval scheme is based on the concept of ‘type approval’ and put simply; this process provides a mechanism for ensuring that vehicles meet relevant environmental, safety and security standards. As it is not practical to test every single vehicle made, one production vehicle is tested as being representative of the ‘type’.

As this Approval covers things like environmental, safety and security standards I would assume that the safety issue of not having video playing within the vision of the driver would be included which is why car makers have to include the necessary system to stop it working whilst the vehicle is being driven.

after taking a spin in the S3 and thinking about this further.....surely the moderators have a legal obligation to report such activity or at the least close the thread?

Warren, whats your position on this?

So does that mean an owner can do anything he/she likes to their vehicle and make it as unsafe to use on the road without it being illegal. I somehow don't think so. All cars have to comply with the UK Construction and Use regulations and they way of showing that a new car complies with these regulations is UK Type Approval.

Personally I'm quite sure over the next few years all countries will move towards the Germany TuV system where any modification or addition equipment fitted to the car has to have TuV approval for fitting to a particular car model.

Even before then having Video in Motion enabled is against the law if it is within the sight of the driver.

I wouldn't have thought so. After all this is a forum, and a forum is "a meeting or medium where ideas and views on a particular issue can be exchanged". Which is exactly what is happening here. Moderators are there to ensure people aren't abusive, rude etc, not to police the internet.

That's not what I am saying, we have laws, MOT tests etc. that make sure a car is roadworthy or legal. I doubt very much if a police officer will start quoting 'this car doesn't meet type approval' to you...

Vehicle manufacturers have to adhere to type approval to ensure they comply with the law.
What we do to cars after buying one that complied to the law must also comply with the law.
Front seat video in motion doesn't.

No maybe a Police Officer, but I think in the near future that may well be the case with the MOT. There are moves in a number of countries to standardise the 'MOT' and for that test to ensure that a car still meets it's original Type Approval and that any modifications also have regulatory approval. This is the case at the moment in Germany and I can see the EU adopting this approach for all member countries.

I was considering VIM, but not for watching vids etc... Was more interested in having my phone display on the screen.

Something like the Apple TV setup for airplay mirroring. Would be a nice to have certain apps like waze/speed camera apps up etc. maybe even spotify if they ever sort out a nice landscape UI for cars

Also...IMO I completely disagree with anyone using VIM for videos whilst moving regardless of who it's for. If it's in view of the driver then a big NO

just be aware police cars are fitted with video screens that display moving video pictures in full view of the driver so I don't really see how people could be fined for doing the same. I will state I am dead against VIM if its in view of the driver but just saying as the law regarding use of telephony equipment in a moving vehicle is also ignored on a regular basis when a police officer takes a hand of the wheel to answer his P.R.
