Tyre pressure monitoring system....

Tire rotation speed isn't it? Using the abs sensors

As far as I know it uses the abs sensors to detect a change in rotation speed

So we're all right then, lol

As above, circumference of each wheel.

How difficult is the initial setup/calibration you have to do? Sounds a bit tedious?

Pump all the tyres up to the right pressure, then tell the MMI all the tyres are at the right pressure. That's it.

It is wheel speed which of course is affected by the circumference or the radius. A wheel with a deflated tyre will rotate at a higher number of rpm. But I'm sure with the educated and discerning Audi driver we all knew that?

I personally wouldn't call it a tire pressure monitoring system, it's more of a low pressure warning system. As it doesn't monitor pressure, only warns when there is a definite and significant pressure change meaning wheel rotation is different.

It only triggered on my a1 when the pressure got to almost atmospheric pressure aka pretty much flat. When I called Audi about the issue they said "it's not a monitoring system"... And will only let you know when it's almost flat - stupid really.... I argued a lot that day lol

These systems seem to be rubbish at noticing slow punctures. Had one on my A1 and the TPMS never even detected it.

Think it's referred to as a puncture warning system in the brochure.

That was pretty much my argument, not useless, but definitely not very helpful lol.

The brochure and all material I've seen call it TPMS (tire pressure monitoring system)

Yep I think I was thinking of my 3 Series brochure. They all merge in to one when you have read them cover to cover a thousand times !

But new A3 brochure has it as "tyre pressure loss indicator".

I'm sure it must be similar, if not the same, as that in my Leon Cupra. This has previously successfully warned me about a slow puncture, well before it was flat, and came on the day after I had the tyres changed last month. I'd not thought/forgotten about re-setting it for the new tyres and it chimed at me the following day. Re-checked the pressures, reset the TPMS and it's been fine since.

It'll be interesting to see how the S3 currently on order compares.

Long sweeping bends can give false alarms, so don't panic if it goes off mid a or b road spirited drive!

I've had mine go off once when a couple of tyres had dropped a bit (just going into winter so probably that - was only a few weeks after the car was new), but I've had 2 flats since and it hasn't picked up on it before I've noticed them myself due to the noise. It then went off after I put the spare on in each case.

I have had my A3 with these monitors since September and to be honest, I think I should have spent the £75 on something else. Shame really. Like a lot of you, I thought they would tell me when my tires needed a top up. They don't.

I hope those with this option aren't put off checking their tyre pressures on a regular basis.
