I have this noise, can't decide if its transmission noise, or induction noise, or turbo whistle.

Comfort Mode

4th gear, D4 or M4 (not S4)

Accelerating reasonably briskly (1/2 to 3/4 throttle) - between 40 and 63 mph - do you get a whine/whistle ?

Thanks :)

Sounds like the turbo, check to see how high your boost gauge is when it does it

I thought Turbo - but I can't reproduce this whine/whistle in any other gear at the same revs :(

It won't about load it will be about load.

It's hard to diagnose a sound without hearing it really.

Does it do it in yours, or any other S3, thats what I'm asking, if you could try it out today?

That would be great :)

edit: It doesn't do the noise when the car is cold.

I'll have a go. I have always thought that the turbo is quite noticeable in it.

veeeight! I know what are you speaking about. And this is not turbo. It is very different from turbo.

It is a subtle sound like a brake pad that rubs against the disk? Is it audible also outside the car, is it constant and increase with the speed and not with the engine RPM? (so basically it remains steady also during gear shift). Does it fades away if you release the throttle?

If the answer to all these questions is "yes". I have the same issue. It began after about 2000 km of life of the car.

I took the car to the dealer yesterday and they were able to hear the noise (and this is a goal...). They made a try putting the car in N while riding, hope they did not damage the gearbox lol). They supposed that it is a transmission noise related to the S-Tronic clutches and they spoke about some "adjustment" that is possible to do on them, but they did not want to take action at the moment. (Because the noise is quite faint). And they told me to keep it monitored if it increases...

edit: mine produces this noise also if cold, but it increases when warm.

My suspicion is also on the Haldex clutches...

What do you mean with "induction noise"?

Danilotto, I will experiment more this weekend to try and find where this noise is coming from.

Induction noise = noise made by the air entering the intake! into the pipes etc.

Think I heard mine doing that earlier, dynamic mode, M4 about the speed you mentioned. Assumed it was turbo or induction noise.

Can we have a play/listen next week Flibble?

I'm sceptical it's turbo/induction, the mic was pretty close to the transmission tunnel :(

But if someone elses S3 is doing it as well, it kinda reassures me!

(In the old days, I would have called that alternator whine !)

I have made an in-cabin recording of my whine.

Here it is:

Ok, it is different from the noise I was addressing to BUT, did you hear if it does come from the loudspeakers (the tweeters)? Because this is very similar to the typical whistle related to bad grounding of the audio amplifier. My S3 too produce this whistle. The strange thing is that the whistle is present also if the entertainment is switched off but I do not know if the amplifier switches off with the entertainment (as it should be) or with the ignition...

^ OK I went out in the car again with the recording equipment. The whine/whistle is definitely not coming from the loudspeakers.

In the old days, I too would have described this as alternator whine, due to lack of suppression. But it's not that.

Question is, is it transmission related, or boost related?

I think Audi could have the answer to your question. In case, let me know :)

Well we confirmed that mine definitely does it too. Sounds like transmission whine to me, might just be the way the 4th gear meshes makes it a bit noisier than other gears.

Hi, the whine veeight refers to is getting worse. Now when the car is warm after some kilometers on highway it is a constant whine in 6th gear from 120 to 140 km/h. Going faster I suspect it is still present but too high in pitch to be detected by the ears. In fact the pitch is related to engine revs. Tomorrow I will contact Audi.

Mine is a dsg and does this in 5th gear mainly and sometimes in 4th or 6th. Very feint whine and as soon as u let go of the pedal it goes. Did anyone find out what it was and if it got fixed or have you just lived with the problem. I'm guessing when u start looking into this it'll just open a tin of worms

mines a manual and makes exactly the same noise if that helps

@veeeight mine was making similar induction sounding noises, related to turbo boost, like air escaping which I thought was attributable to my aftermarket diverter valve....however now I have the Forge BOV on I can't hear it anymore :)
I am now getting more transmission 'whine' after having the ECU and TCU remapped...but this is really only noticeable when in 1st gear.
Hope you find the problem, if indeed there is one

I have noticed this on mine as well, S-tronic, Haven't had a play about to see if it happens in certain gears etc but i can only describe it as a whistle/swoosh noise upon acceleration (along with my metalic rustle noise:blahblah1:) Will do some testing to see if it only happens in certain gears, cold engine and so on.

Mine makes a hell of a whoosh... :tonguewink:

On a serious note, I have heard a bit of transmission whine - instinctively that makes me worry but seems quite characteristic of 8V S3s???

@batch hello, can you kindly clarify about your transmission whine? I have 30.000 km now and I have a loud whine in 6th gear, it is more noticeable at 90-110 km/h, then between 130-140km/h. It is similar to static from the sound system on old cars where the alternator was not well filtered. Mine is S-Tronic.

What do you need to know? Mine is mainly on overrun coming down from higher speeds.
