new s3/sat nav

Hi all

I was going to order a s3. After driving a golf, somehow find DSG faster. Now I'm hesitant about s3. What's your view please?

Also, is Sat Nav plus worth the money?

DSG is faster, so get a DSG S3. ;)

It's a decent enough sat nav, depends if you want a sat nav or not. It integrates nicely into the car compared to a separate nav device.

Thank you for your reply. If there was a dsg s3, I would. What do u think of the performance?

I want to find out difference between the sat nav sd and sat nav plus please?
 
There is a DSG S3... S-Tronic and DSG are the same thing. The S3 is a little lighter so in theory it should be a little faster.

I will find out. New s3 is heavier then the new golf though.
 
Biggest difference between the sat nav's briefly is the SD version uses the smaller / low resolution screen and has 2D mapping - the tech pack has much bigger higher resolution screen, touch pad interface and 3D mapping.

Also I'm sure the S3 is lighter than the equivalent Golf R due to its use of aluminium ? Another member more in the know will confirm this I'm sure.

It's best if I go for 3D mapping then. I think the plus option also allows the myaudi destination preset. That is awesome.
 
I think some of the weight confusion is people comparing kerb weights to unladen weights. Kerb weights include a 75 kg driver so will be a bit higher than the unladen weight.

Which S3 were you looking to get Vanessa? 3 door, SB, saloon? Also welcome to ASN :)

I am going for an A3 s line now. 5 doors. Sportback. Black. 1.4 stronic. Cylinder on demand. Comfort pack. There's a car available in 2 weeks v close to what I want.

Really am thinking hard with the optional features. Want the sunroof as it looks cool. Don't know whether I could add on the already built car. Then the Sd 2d sat nav, not sure if it's worth just to stick with my s4 phone. I haven't seen it. But it sounds inferior. Do you think it's worth it or I should go for sat nav plus?

Most people seem to think SD nav is perfectly sufficient- screen size is 5.8 inches vs 7 inches high res (tech pack/plus) - functionality isn't too different - SD has traffic info, lane advice, full postcode etc. (tech pack has 3D mapping and lane advice in driver screen in front of you, and touch pad for putting in postcodes, and 10GB HD drive for music)

Sounds like a nice car :) Firstly, from what I understand, dealers can't currently retrofit very much at all on the 8V A3 yet, and certaibly not serious hardware like the satnav, as the main box you'd need to change also runs the MMI and costs around £4-5K. I would go on the basis that whatever you get on an existing car from stock is the spec you'll have, at least for the time being.

If you're uncertain on optional extras therefore, I'd keep your options open on what stock car you'd ike to buy, or re-consider a factory order.

On the sat-nav front, I think (I haven't tried one myself) from what other ASN members have said, the SD Sat Nav is a good piece of kit, and I'm sure it will do a good job of navigating you no problem. The main benefits of the tech pack/sat nav+ is the larger screen with better resolution, as well as the Hard drive for music (and some other bits). Personally I think its worth the money (but then again I did order it!), but if you just want a quality sat nav and aren't that bothered about the other tech then the SC sat nav will be just fine.

What options are you considering? Everyone has their opinions, and here is mine....

Must haves

Comfort pack with parking sensors
Sound upgrade (at least ***)
Hill Hold Assist
At least SD Nav

Should haves

Tech Pack
B&O Sound
ACC (adapative cruise)

Here is my 2p worth... I have the Nav + (and love the big screen.....) but the thing I do like is the ability to log onto My Audi and send destinations to the car from Google Maps.
 
Dealers can easily retrofit the sat nav, it's about £500 + fitting (negotiable). The UK cars are fitted with the Sat Nav hardware as standard, you just need to pay Audi for the maps on SD card and the activation / licence fee.

Panoramic sunroof is definitely not possible to retrofit.
 
I imagine it is, but only if you are willing to sell kidneys, relatives etc to pay for it...

Fitting/activation is £168 (ish), and SD card can be bought from ebay (brand new 2014 maps for about £120)
 
The big screen does look nice, but the novelty does wear off after a bit, and it becomes "functional" - my evoque has an 8 inch screen and while it was great to start with and i now barely notice the difference vs the 6.5 inch I had on the A5 previously. (people complain its too bright lol) The high res is nice, but I find most of the time I am looking at the road rather than the screen (aside from the quick glance!), so all depends whether you can justify it - how much time u spend in traffic/parked etc. I imagine a lot of the time I will probably pop the screen down so its more of a focused driving experience ;)

I deliberated for a while but thought for the extra c£1.2k it would cost I couldn't justify- better more "incremental" things to spend it on that actually do signficantly more (ACC, park plus, comfort pack)

but don't get me wrong I would have it like a shot if it cost £500!

That's a rip off. Note it says "PLEASE NOTE THE ITEM DOES NOT COME WITH A SECURITY CODE AND WILL NEED TO BE ACTIVATED BY AN AUDI DEALER" - this means you will have to pay for the licence too, at a cost of £480+ or something. The cost in the nav is the licence, not the actual SD card or the data (which are cheap, not £120)

yes exactly- you pay for the activation/security code, but its £168, not £480, (I asked my dealer directly- hence my comment Fitting/activation is £168 (ish), and SD card can be bought from ebay (brand new 2014 maps for about £120)
), so £45 + £168 = £213, or £120 + £168 for a 2014 SD = £288 - both a lot cheaper than £500

Hi all

Thank you for all valuable advice. I did suspect something fishy when I mentioned about the retrofit sat nav plus for the stock car. The salesman said its unnecessary extra 1000 pounds. I have read the reviews. The myaudi connection is exceptional and the touch pad recognition. I then think I might not really use it as I'm right handed. Using left hand fingers to write postcode when driving might not work. Anyway, they might only be able to retrofit sd sat nav:(. Hard choice of the 5 months wait or sat nav plus and sunroof.

I'm going for the comfort pack for sure. How's ACC? Oh and the park assist interests me. :)
 
ACC is brilliant, wouldn't be without it now on another car!

I actually find I can write on the touch pad better with my left hand than with my right hand in the passenger seat, I've got used to it, heh

Have heard only good things about ACC and the videos I have seen of it look excellent. Personally I don't think nav plus is worth waiting 5 months for. (Although others may have their opinion)

Re park assist- mixed reviews on here- sometimes doesn't work properly, many don't find reason to use
 
I agree with cemerson here, I wouldn't be without ACC now, and that's only 3 weeks in. It basically takes away the worst part of driving (motorway traffic and stop-start traffic) and that in itself is worth every penny!

Good write up and pretty much where I was after spending like 5k on options...
 
Have to say the Panoramic Sunroof is the dogs...I have one on my S3.....but you will have to await a build slot unless you can hi-jack one that a dealer may have ordered. Nav+ as others have said.

Regards Sat Nav, just ordered my wife an A1 to complement my S3, and if we had wanted to retrofit SD satnav, then we would have had to have the comms pack fitted when the car was built (cost £300). Not sure if that may be a base requirement on the A3....

In any case I have Nav+ on my S3, and am very impressed with it....

A3's come with everything that's needed for Nav. Can add the SD nav at any point in the future.

No the A3 is ready to go for the SD card nav unlike the A1 without connectivity pack. To get the function to work you have to buy the Navigation SD card which includes an activation code. It does have to be switched on by a dealer though. Think cost is £499 and sounds like that is what the OP has been offered as a solution from their dealer.

As said above, activation may be a lot less- ask your dealer

Can anyone comment about the A3 in the United States?

I'm looking to add nav to my MMI unit. But, I'm not sure if it is as simple as it is in the UK. I have no way of knowing if the unit is navigation ready or not. (Is there a way of knowing?)

Any advice is appreciated!
 
I read somewhere that if you have LED pack it works with the sat nav to light up the side streets as you drive past, does this work with the SD version???
 
Works with the Xenon lights too, not just LED...
