As far as we know at the moment it cannot be switched off permanently but the is a small module available from Kufatec that plugs in to the OBD port inside the car that will do it. Here are the details:

It can't be turned off permanently in any 'normal' way because it's part of the emissions rating and therefore tax band that the car falls in.
You can prevent it from activating in VCDS.
It's a bit of a fudge, but nevertheless you can do it. It involves setting an improbable parameter value, so say, set min Batt Voltage to +12V, or set External Ambient Temp Max to +50.
In this way Stop/Start will never activate as those values will never get achieved.

I did question my salesman on this issue before I placed an order. My scenario was if stuck in traffic jam in snow due to accident, could it be disabled, in order to allow you to keep the car's heating on, he replied yes? Was I being told 'Porky Pie's'? I know for certain that you can override the stop start in a BMW, seen it done.
You can switch off the Start/Stop using a switch on the dashboard but this only switches it off until the ignition is turned off. When you turn the ignition back on the Start/Stop will be automatically switched on again.
Yep - would easily cover that scenario just by pressing the button on the dashboard. Anyway, you can do what you like with the heating - let the car decide whether it can cope with the engine on or not, it has system to do that!
There is no need because if the cabin temp falls too low compared to ambient then the stop/start will not kick in...
Disengaging the start stop function (not via the dash button) with the brake and clutch. Whilst stationary with clutch pressed, foot on brake and gear in neutral, keep clutch in take foot off brake apply brake again for 3 to 4 seconds release clutch and brake the start stop function becomes disabled illustrated in the DIS. Has or can anyone test this to confirm?
I like the fact that at times I'm using zero fuel. In fact I get miffed when the car decides it's not going to allow it to work.
I parked on the drive the other day and it switched off, attempted to turn steering wheel slightly and it fired itself back in to life.

It will sneakily re-activate, if you scroll through Drive Select, and go through Eco Mode, this will re-activate S/S.
I don't mind it, I've got used to adjusting brake pedal pressure to trigger it or not as required.
Same here. It's much better on the 8V that the 8P because if I know I'm going to be stopped for a while I just click the parking brake and I can take my foot off the brake and the engine will stay stopped, then just press the accelerator to move. On the 8P to get the same I had to move the s-tronic lever in to Park and then from Park to Drive to move again.
I didn't like it at first..... But now used to it , its quite good and don't really notice.

I had a fiat rental car before picking up my S3 and that had horrible start stop by comparison. It was really easy to confuse and stalled a couple of times when restarting. Makes you look a bit of a berk when you're sat at a green traffic light not moving because the stupid start stop stalled.
Hated it initially, but now I've got used to varying the brake pressure to regulate S/S it's much better.
I actually feel cheated now in town if it doesn't come on!
But one occasion I definitely disable it is when I'm ragging the car, or after a high speed run, I do want a minute or two of tickover and cool down, rather than it cutting out immediately!

Not sure if it's a stronic thing, but if you come to a stop by gently applying pressure to the break pedal, s/s doesn't activate. You have to push it hard to get it to activate. This is not a switch on/off thing, just each time you come to a stop.
I have an S-tronic, so can't directly answer your question!
But as arad85 says above, brake pedal pressure will determine if S/S activates.
In addition with S-tronic (no need for Hold Assist Option):
Come to a halt, press brake pedal hard. S/S Activates.
Flick on Electronic Park Brake, take foot off brake. S/S still activated (engine stopped).
Then either
1. A slight tap on the throttle will re-start the engine, but won't release the EPB. A second tap/press on the throttle will then release the EPB and off you go, or
2. Mash the throttle, the engine will re-start, EPB will disengage, DSG clutches will engage, and off you go like a scalded cat !!!
It's great playing will all the different permutations !!

I've found if you touch the accelerator gently then hold assist will release when it restarts the engine and you'll creep forwards.

My biggest problem is a level crossing I have to cross to get to the RSPB Head Quarters where I do some volunteering. The crossing is on the East Coast main line and sometimes I can be stooped there for 5-6 minutes whilst about 4 expresses and two local trains go by.
In the 8P the start/stop used to cut in but rather than keep my foot on the brake all the time, I applied the handbrake and put the s-tronic in to Park. When the barriers when up I had to put my foot on the brake, move the level from Park to Drive, release the handbrake and then I could go and then move the lever across to manual again..
With the 8V the engine stops and I just click on the Parking Brake, the s-tronic remains in manual mode and I can take my foot off the brake. When the barriers go up all I have to do is press the accelerator. Much better.

Worth having then, I was slightly confused over the Stop / Start - eBrake / Hold assist.
For £90 it's a no brainer really and does sound ace. Maybe a daft question but does it still engage if not even on a hill?

Hate it with a passion! I just don't like the fact that the car thinks it knows better than I do when I want to start or stop the engine.
