Tyres

Almost.

520 miles in, and I've had enough of the Conti 5's.

Noisy, and the grip is just nowhere near my S3 8P with GY Eagle F1 Assy2's.

I'm comparing the same roads, under similar conditions, and being careful to compare like for like speeds in and out of corners.

On the plus side - I can report that the S3 8V is very tail happy, especially in the wet :) It's great to get the tail out on lift-off, and being able to correct and adjust it on the throttle very easily - much more fun than the 8P.

(and before anyone suggests that I need to run in new tyres - trust me - the mould relase agent/layer has long gone!!) :)

glad its not just me that thinks the conti 5's are really loud

I'm experiencing the same problems, last straw was when I almost ended up backwards on roundabout which i was shocked at as I wasn't even pushing it! Not a fan of the Conti's

Anyone replaced their tyres on their S3 yet and if so what with?

Cheers
JT

I've not got an S3 but a 2.0TDI-184 s-tronic quattro and I had Hankook Ventus Evo S1 tyres on my previous 2.0TDI-170 and they were very good and very quiet. I had budgeted to change all four tyres on my new 8V depending on what tyres in came on. Fortunately for me it came on Dunlop Sport MAXX RT tyres which would have been my other choice.

I have conti's and yes they are really loud! I just turn up the music :)

All new tyres sold now come with an EU label which grades noise, wet grip and fuel.
It's law for retailers to show this, so check out an online retailer for results.
Albeit tyre manufacturers are responsible for grading their own products - so wangkings from china will state whatever they like, but the big boys results will be accurate.

Sport 5's in 225/40Y18 are rated at 71db
Dunlop Sport Maxx RT in the same size are rated at 68db

My understanding is that the 3db difference equates to the conti's being twice as loud as the Dunlop.

There is so much wrong with Continental tyres isn't there? - a simple search of this forum will explain more. I am so impressed with my Pirelli tyres :)

Something like 1 in 3 new cars on uk roads come with Conti as OE.
Knowing the amount of work that goes into homologation approval, the engineers and designers must rate them.

Depends what is most important. Wear, grip, noise, steering, stability etc.
Usually if you aim for one area, the others suffer (grip v's wear is the perfect example)
Conti's tend to be a balance of all criteria.

Yes I agree with that.

The Conti gives a better (more accurate) steering placement than the Assy2's, and slightly more subjective road feel too.
It also wears reasonably well, probably only the Mich PS3 might wear better.

So as an all rounder, it's not bad, but the downside is wet grip, and noise.

They also probably do a fantastic OE deal with the manufacturers :)

Glad to hear you finally got delivery of the 184. Hope you are enjoying it! Just out of interest what kind of noise levels do you get from the Dunlop's RT's? I went for GY F1 Asy2's on the front of mine and it improved the road noise a bit over the Conti 5's. I still have Conti's on the back at present, so I wouldn't describe my car as quiet. Road noise remains my biggest issue with the A3. It is far too high. I find myself reaching for the stereo volume knob when doing more than 50mph. Just back from the US where I had a 240ps Ford Fusion Titanium and it was so much quieter, even if it did do 20mpg!

^ For an A3 thats almost as quiet as a Rolls-Royce Ghost, read this thread:

Yes I read that a while back. Amazing! Not with my tyres IMHO. My wife's Golf Mk VII is so much quieter than my Audi 8V. I am wondering whether it is partly down to the more elaborate suspension system on the 8V. Our Golf has the simple rear suspension setup. Fast cornering is interesting as I found out the other day!

My previous A3 had Hankook Ventus Evo S1 tyres and them seem to be very quite. The Dunlops on my new A3 are just as quiet and I don't get very much type noise at all. Mt wife and I can chat at normal volume even doing 70-80 mph. I must say the cornering with the new 184 quattro is amazing. I'm off to the North York Moors for a week tomorrow and I should get some good driving in.

Don't have an S3, however for my tuppence worth it has to be GY Eagle F1 Assy2's.
Three reasons; grip in the wet, road noise, and the excellent rim protector.

That's me Rob, our paths have crossed in the past. In fact there's quite a few user name on here I recognise.
Got another month or so to get my moneys worth out of the Cupra and then it's miles per gallon as oppose to smiles per gallon for me!

Haha sound mate didn't know you still had the cupra, I thought I was the last "original" to get rid, of the people who were first living in the MK2 section. Tfsi mike still has his though although how much of SEAT is left on it remains to be seen!

How much (if any) curb protection do the Conti 5 tyres have?

Never had a car with Continentals so no experience but from sounds of it they will be fitted to my S3 when it arrives.

A little, but nothing special. It's definitely less than is offered by PS3s for instance.

This worries me. Mrs Pulp loves getting wheels very close to curbs.

There is a thread somewhere on one of the car forums, where they use a pound coin to demonstrate how much rim protector there is.

From memory, Conti's you can barely rest a £1 coin on, Assy2's you can get 2 £1 coins side by side within the rim protector !

edit: found it, it was our very own ASN RS3 forum!

I agree about the rim protector. It is the largest I have seen on any tyre. Even I will struggle to wreck the alloys!

Sounds fantastic. Pleased that you are so delighted after such a long wait. The Dunlop RT's have the lowest rolling resistance of any sport tyre too, so that will save you some money on fuel. They have decent grip - the only caveat being they wear quite fast.

I can confirm it is quite easy to kerb wheels with Conti 5s on....

I'm a bit more careful now.

Good find - thank you. :sm4: My company BMW has Goodyears and the rim protection is at least a centimetre. Very handy!

Is park assist the one that parks the car for you ? If so I have seen that feature curb a mates wheel while he was showing it off to me. I've taught Mrs Pulp how to use the mirrors now when parking so hopefully be OK

How does it compare to the Pilot Sport rim protector? I'm still debating F1s vs PS3s for my first tyre swap...

That said from what people said on here I was expecting the contis to be terrible, but they seem fine to me, not even that noisy, though I do have comfort pack.

I don't mind the Contis and when I changed tyres I asked for the actual AO specced Conti 5's and the rim protector on them sticks out a mile compared to stock Conti 5's which Audi fit on all cars so why do Audi not fit the AO Contis on there new cars.

Maybe they changed the design of them recently as my Conti 5's definitely have AO stamped on them and have very small rim protectors. My car is 2013 plate 13 reg.

I have never actually made my Park Assist Plus to work. It seems to dislike all the spaces I find. Either too wide or narrow. It all seems rather pointless to me. Thanks for the warning about kerbing, I will bear that in mind if it ever decides to have a go at parking!

Mine have effectively no rim protectors (checked earlier, couldn't balance a pound on them) and the car is only a few weeks from the factory.

Slightly off topic but I thought this was interesting....

I was lucky enough to do a factory tour of Honda's factory in Swindon a few weeks ago. We spent the most time watching and finding out the about the process of putting the tyres / wheels on new CRV's. Someone on the tour asked what tyres they put on and the response was "depends what our suppliers have as everything is just in time". Think tyres were Bridgestone or Dunlops. The tour guide said basically the tyres will be one of these two manufactures but fitted can differ in tyre spec month to month, again depending on what was delivered.

Maybe this could happen with VAG too ? Would explain sometimes the difference in tyres people get for the same spec car. Although, this theory doesn't seem to apply to S3 tyres.

Just got the back end round again - this time in the dry !!!

Around this particular roundabout, I normally have to provoke a car to get it to step out, this time, just lifted off !!

****** grip-less Contis :(
