Doing motorway miles not exceeding much over 70-75mph and I got 50ish miles to a quarter of a tank ,is this normal to u guys?or is there something wrong with the s3

Nope not normal at all! I did a motorway run last week with two bikes on the roof racks doing 60-70mph and still averaged 30MPG which would be equal to nearly 400 miles to a tank or 100 every quarter… so yes i would say there is something seriously wrong with your car if its averaging roughly 15mpg with normal driving!

Any suggestions to what it may be?

Plus aswell when I'm looking at my mpg gauge, when I have a steady foot one minute I'm doing 30mpg and then it goes to up then down.

When was it last serviced? Are your tyre pressures correct? Possible issues around the air filter/flow, theres a whole host of reasons what it could be to be honest, best get it booked into a garage and get a diagnostic on it if it can't be solved by something obvious..

Instant MPG or the average MPG reading? The instant one will change by the second depending on all sorts of things.

Just had it serviced,I have nitro in my tyres and don't need topping up just yet.probs b a good idea to get it checked.thanks

It was my instant mpg, think my average is running at 26mpg aswell.but I may of been goin little faster than 70+ to get that.just concerning that I have been a slow driver tonight and received those figures

Is that 50 miles to a quarter tank from full?? If so the needle doesn't appear to be linear on my S3 so occasionally it looks as if i have only done a low amount of miles to the first quarter of a tank then it slows down and overall it alway works out fine.

The best thing to do if you think something might be wrong is to see how many miles you get to a full tank, 26MPG average sounds about right though if the computer is showing that i wouldn't worry!

26mpg sounds pretty normal to me. I get average 24mpg most of my driving is A roads though.

Yeah it was from a full tank,it's just not nice it going down so fast when I'm in the slow lane (like a oap)fingers crossed for it to slow down

Yeah I can do the first quarter of a tank on the needle in about 35 miles if I try, still manage ~300 to a tank (no motorway driving, all twisty A roads). The few blasts i've had on the motorway I can cruise at ~34mpg and probably get closer to 400.

First quarter of a tank from full on the needle is just lies :)

Try using www.fuelly.com, it will give you your mpg. Very simple and a lot more accurate than the on board computer.

Definitely not linear, in my 07 Sline A3 TDI I will get about 180 miles out of the first quarter tank, then it drops of a bit each subsequent quarter tank. I get around 600 miles out of a full tank.

I recall reading something about re calibrating the fuel indication system making it more accurate.

In seven years of S3 ownership my average MPG has been about 27.9mpg (taken from long range DIS). Sometimes I eek 360 miles out of a tank, but not often, with a lot of around town journeys less than 300 miles per tank.

A weekend at the Ring, 155 miles from the tank! Don't go by manufacturers recommendations, they're up to 20% above what can be achieved in average driving scenarios (other than if you're drafting lorries and trying to set the Mr Slow Guinness record). If your car is running right, tyres are at correct pressures (circa 42 front / 33 back), and it's regularly serviced you've done all you can do.

Best bet is to brim it, reset the trip, drive it for 100miles and refill the tank. Only then will you know what it's used/mpg.
