Playing video on the mmi screen

Hi,

Does anybody know if it is possible to play video through the mmi screen (from an SD card or from iPod) if you haven't got the tech pack? Would be really useful when I'm waiting for ****** ages to pick the misses up from work!

If it is possible, what formats work?

I think someone on here tried it and said it wouldn't work without the Tech Pack but don't quote me.
 
It works with me and I dont have the tech pack only the AMI cable with the red collar. It will stop playing as soon as u drive away for safety reasons.
 
I don't think you can. The same movie file that plays in my tech pack does not play in my colleagues non-tech pack car. It just comes up with an error along the lines of unrecognised file format.
 
Oops, think we both posted at the same time. So possibly the non-tech pack will play videos from an iPod, but not from an SD card?
 
I've read you can off iPod or iPad with the right cable........... I will try it , see if I can buy said cable!

Also the safety can be taken off with vag com / vcds . .??????

Done some digging and above is the RED cable part number , some say plays album artwork only and some says plays video stationary , one member and seat hamburg say it can be unlocked for in motion vim by vcds but NOT recommended.

I have video working with red cable from iphone, but have tried 2 different mp4 on SD card and it doesn't play (non tech pack).

I have it working on an ipod touch and the red cable
 
Just to clarify-only the tech pack allows video from SD card?
 
Update,

Tried that tutorial yesterday. Could not be played. MMI threw an error, something along the lines of format unrecognised.

is it just a matter of playing video on device and then selecting something through the mmi?
 
You can play video from an SD card in an A5 with Tech pack but not on A3 with SD Nav

No I am pretty sure it's the same size, bezel all the way around- the screen isn't actually as small as it sounds- 1.2 inches isn't huge difference! I think it is perfectly adequate, as tempted as I was to spend an extra £1.1k vs retrofitting!
 
Had the Smaller SD screen in A 7 which was OK. In the end with a bit of discount tweaking I managed to upgrade to Tec pack for less than £200 even though I have no wi fi hot spot. The Tec pack includes more features and free upgrades.

I would defo have gone for tech pack at that price! But as I already got a great discount on the whole car, think that I wouldn't be able to get a further discount on the tech pack - and even if they made it half price, i still couldn't justify an extra £650
 
Agree with you. We ended up with 9% and £500 from Audi.
 
does anybody know if the white/green apple specific will play the video through non tech pack mmi?
 
Ipod with red cable, non tech pack, plays video on MMI
 
I have purchased the red cable today,I get the soundtrack from the video but screen just shows pic of iPod with a circle spinning.any ideas?

Hello all! Been trying to find this information for a few days! Thanks for this!

One question, I have a 2015 A3 with non-navigation basic MMI, could I connect the AMI cable with the RCA ends and input HDMI (with a converter) so I can connect my Android phone and show my navigation apps? I plan to get a vag-com to do the VIM thing and also change to close windows with remote.

It's probably a lot less hassle watch video from a smartphone or tablet. Also, it will be better resolution and the screen will be straight in front of you rather than offset to the left.

You could bluetooth the sound through the car stereo.
 
audi upgrades
I do bluetooth, but would like to have my android device mirrored so I can see my waze app while I drive to work, currently I have to look down all the time and not as ideal. Plus I could use it somewhat like a half-baked android auto (voice commands).
 
Anyone know what frame size to put to make the video fit the screen completely? I've managed to get video working on my iPod touch without the tech pack but doesn't fill the screen. Has black bars going horizontally on the top and bottom. The frame size I used was 720x576 which I read somewhere would work.
 
audi upgrades
MP4 from the ipod. Video works fine, it just doesn't cover the entire screen.

Hi I have just bought an Audi A3 8v and have the mmi but without the nav...I run an iPhone 6 and spend 3 nights a week waiting for over an hour for my kids to train at football... I'd love to watch my sky go on the mmi screen instead of my iPhone but I can't figure out the simple products to buy? Can you help
