Hissing noise in the background

Hi all,

Just to know if it is the same on your S3s...

I notice a slight background hissing noise when the car moves from standstill. It is not the turbo spinning, it reminds me the noise of a brake pad creeping on the disk or the butcher's slicing machine lol.

Did you notice it?

Nope, it is another thing. When I move from standstill (mine is S-Tronic) I hear in the background a slight hissing noise it is something like expanding gas noise when you switch on the A/C but it is not the A/C at all. It comes from the front.

Maybe something related to the vacuum pump of the servo brake?

For the past 2 days, I have noticed a very similar noise. Like a quiet hissing, similar to when your aircon system is low on gas, and it is moving through the pipes.

I can only hear this:
In an indoor Multi storey car park
It is very quiet
Only when the steering wheel is turned to almost 1 full rotation
It doesn't make the noise (or is very quiet) when the steering wheel is straight ahead
So far I've only heard it at slow ish speeds


Did you find out where the noise is coming from?

I have exactly the same issue between 1000-2000 rpm. There is already another thread as regards this 'metallic rustle' as previously mentioned. I'm not too sure this isn't one and the same to a varying degree?

To be honest, unless it gets any louder, it doesn't unduly concern me. It may just be a trait of the car (I stand to be corrected). Mine goes back to the dealers next week to get the S tronic gearbox checked out. I will mention the noise and see what they say.

On mine, this is a completely different sound to the metallic rustle/tinkling noise, which is the wastegate actuator rod.

Someone in a Golf R has noticed this noise too.

I noticed it again yesterday, when it was hammering it down with rain, when I pulled into a covered Multi storey car park.

Uhm, I read the golf R thread and they write about a steered wheels situation. The hissing noise I noticed is constant also going straight. As louder as stronger is the acceleration, it is not related to engine revs and this make me think it is related to transmission and not to engine. It is like the brake pad rubbing against the disk.

I had the car checked by two different Audi dealer. The first said that it could be related to the S-Tronic clutches, the other did not notice the noise (lol)

It could be interesting to know if only S-Tronic experience this noise or also manual.
