iPhone 5 adapter with mmi

Well it works well on my four year old Civic although it doesn't display album art etc. all the tags come through and are displayed on the mmi
 
All good now thanks. It was a slightly dodgy ami cable connection we think. Seems to be ok now. Fingers crossed. Thanks for your help.
 
Hi All,

Not too sure if you are aware but Audi this week have released an MMI Cable for the iPhone 5. I picked up my new car last week and had the new cable inside.

Here is the part number if anyone is interested in getting one

4F0 051 510 AC

 
What the hell is that colour on the collar on the cable?!

I thought it was supposed to be green!!!

Just collected my A3 saloon today, and was given an iPod/iPhone MMI cable, with a lightning connector, and it has a green collar.

The part number is 4F0 051 510 AF

I haven't had a chance to try it with my iPad Mini yet, so don't know if will show the album covers.

Update 12/04/14: Tried the cable with my iPad Mini and, whilst it charges the iPad, and plays the music, it doesn't show the album artwork, but this may be because the photo sizes are above the 500x500 pixel limited accepted by the standard MMI.

Ive just got a C7 RS6 with the 4G MMI.

Not too sure what the different colours relate to...? I will email a guy that I know at Audi and report back soon.
 
That looks like a big chunky adaptor in the photo. Does that plus iPhone even fit inside the arm rest, especially with the plug being at 90 degrees to the cable?
 
Yeh, the lightning requires some electronics in the cable itself to actually work. It'll be all of that.

Well no since Audi make the cables. They could make one cable which fulfils every role but they choose to make various ones that all do different things. I could ask why you think it would be Apple's fault but I think we can all guess your response...

Don't you think they'd only make one cable if that was possible? Why do you think they only make one cable for everything else? Can you not spot the common theme here?

And your evidence for this is...?

Because all the evidence I can see points towards 2 cables being necessary due to Apple changing the design of the connectors constantly (as usual). Why do you think they needed 2 cables for the last connector depending on age of the device, 2 for this connector by the looks of things, yet everyone else has 1 connector that works for everything?

"Constantly" being one change to lightening from the old 30 pin?

I have no idea what logic Audi are using when they release multiple cables (red, blue, green, white, etc!) with restricted functionality for certain cables (at least this is my understanding, as of yet I don't have an Audi!). Bizarre marketing exercise with the end result being confused customers from what I can see.

I'm device agnostic - get whatever phone floats your boat, it's a free(ish) country.

Hahaha no, just because the design doesn't change physically doesn't mean the protocols and pin layouts don't change over time.

Like I say, this is unlikely to be Audi's fault. Apple have a long and well known history for being unable to support standards (just look at the people complaining about their latest model still not working with the Message Access Protocol on bluetooth properly). So the logic they are likely using is that "this is necessary to support all the features and changes that have happened with the lightning connector". What other logic would there be? Do you think they want to confuse their customers unnecessarily? If so, why don't they do it with the other cables they do? Like I said - the common pattern here is Apple, not Audi!

Minor changes to my knowledge, nothing fundamental that should impact Audi.

I'm sure there will be arguments for and against on both sides (and TBH I'm not fused about getting into such a discussion) but what I don't get is why are Audi releasing multiple cables - one that can do all the jobs and one that cannot? This is nothing to do with Apple.

Again, where's your evidence here? If they could release a single cable, no doubt they would. They obviously couldn't with the old connector, hence them supporting different ages of device when Apple made changes, I don't see any reason why the new connector would be different.

As I understand it, there are two versions of the old 30 pin connector cable (red and blue collar). One of these has additional functionality vs. the other. If that is indeed the case, I do not comprehend a reason for them doing it that makes any sense, either from the Audi or the Apple side.

I don't agree that that was the primary driver behind the change in design; I'm sure it was a factor (they are, after all, a business) but not the primary reason.

Anyway, a bit off topic here!

Will see what's what when I finally get an Audi and try and plug my phone in!

Just trying to make it clear to someone who didn't seem to grasp the concept that it might be the fault of their beloved Apple that they have to buy 200 different cables. No need to get all defensive - what's the matter, have you just had the same realisation?

Nice.

I couldn't give a crap about Apple but until someone explains to me why there are two cables - one that offers additional functionality over the other, the justification for it sits with Audi IMO.
 
I've already told you - Apple change the protocols that their cables use occasionally. You don't seem to want to believe me though!

I have the green lightning cable and an iPhone 5 and works fine for me with std MMI.

I also have the red cable but not bought the adaptor so can't comment on this yet to determine which is better.

Does iPhone5 plus the green cable fit in the armrest ok? The cable looks quite bulky and there are some odd angles involved.

It fits fine with the armrest in a raised or dropped position - I also have a clear plastic casing around my phone and it connects without removing this.

Thanks. My red collar plus iPhone5 plus adaptor works perfectly but it's a tight fit in the arm rest pocket and I have to remove my casing to plug the phone in.

The adaptor is obviously the problem - do you get album artwork?
