TTS Clutch slipping

****** typical.. Need a new clutch, No sign of slippage on the test drive I did before buying. Sod law!

What is the cost for a new clutch in a TTS? And any recommendations? Stock/Upgrade? What to do.

Am guessing that a clutch is not covered as part of the warranty.

1) How long have you had it?

2) Where did you buy it from (Private / dealer)?

3) If private and it's over 3 years old then you are paying for a new one.

4) If you have plans to modify the car in anyway I'd go the Sachs upgrade kit with OEM DMF and get all the bearings done at the same time. It's a big / expensive job to get it all done, so you only want it done when it needs to be done, not for ancilliary bits and pieces. Budget in the ballpark of £1600+ for parts and labout depending on who does it (if you go Audi a good chunk more).

Thanks for a quick reply Warren..

I bought it last Friday from company in Farnham. I have got a top level warranty but do not know if it covers the clutch. I am guessing that the clutch being a part that wears is not covered but will keep my fingers crossed until i read up on it.

It was a dealer but not Audi. All highend cars like Bentley GT, Lamborghini etc.. Will give them a call and see what they say.

I would, I don't think it's acceptable that the clutch is slipping already. It's a wear over time item rather than a 'working' then 'broken' part.

They will have hoped it was bought by a light footed person who didn't drive it hard enough (or didin't test drive it properly themselves).

I'd imagine you have the right to reject the car within a week if it's not fit for purpose (consumer rights), so keep that in your back pocket if they decide they are going to be unhelpful.

Well called the warranty people and as i guessed its not covered. So on to the garage next to see what if at all they are willing to do about it.

I do have a friend who did most of my work on my 06 Golf GTI. He has quoted £250 to fit, no price on parts yet but that will all be OEM Audi parts.

So corrective action stage 1 see what the garage will do to help. As you say it’s less than a week since i bought the car so hopefully they offer something in terms of a fix

Stage 2 get my friend to fit and swallow a bad pill and just pay for the repair myself.

(The car was owned by an elderly couple explains the clutch wear @ 26000 miles) Apart from that the car is pretty much mint.. kerbed wheels again as to be expected with elderly drivers.

Well have called the dealer and they have agreed for me to take it in on Thursdays so that we can get some one to check it out that knows what they are doing..

At least it’s not a blanket NO Sold as seen. They do seem to be a decent company so will go with popping in to Farnham on Thursday and see how this pans out. I will update this thread once i know more just incase any one is interested to know what happens.

Odd thing is my old golf had over 100K and was still on its original clutch.. Must have been the previous owners (elderly) riding the clutch..

The clutches are like cheese on these cars. Everything got uprated and they basically stuck an MPV clutch in it! My first one went a 9k miles on my last car. They've been upgraded from LUK to Sachs in later cars, but the LUK ones are appalling. If you want a recommendation from me, if you are accelerating on a motorway in 6th, DONT, drop to fifth and do the acceleration move. If you don't you will be shortening the life of the clutch considerably. Likewise be considerate of the clutch when you're bedding it in.

Cheeky Audi.. And thanks again for your advice on the clutch Warren, appreciated.

Looks like my date with Revo will have to go on hold until this is resolved. No point adding more power just yet... :(

Popped to the garage today and typically the clutch would not slip on the test run we did.. All is not lost though as it is getting harder to select 2nd and 4th and this was really apparent on the test run, So at least the mechanic did get to see a issue with the car.

So report back was it could be the clutch or it could also be the gearbox.. Clutch, they the garage are going to cover and if its the gearbox then at least the warranty should cover.. Really annoyed though.. Spent cash on a low miles car thinking it was the right way to go and now have a lush car that i don't want to drive until fixed, And it looks like possibly the best weather on a bank holiday in years and i am sat here changing all my plans simply to keep the miles off the car until fixed, and to make matters worse i have my son this weekend and wanted to go cruising with him to the coast to blast our RC boats/cars about.. Frustrated to say the least..

Not great news.

Easiest way I demo'd mine slipping was putting it in 6th gear at 60mph then accelerating hard as it's under max load.

Good news about garage covering clutch, and gearbox being covered by warranty. Low mileage isn't a measure of anything really, if they we're unsympathetic drivers mechanically, they could be grinding gears so it's hard to judge. AlexS3 found there was a lot of wear on his gear selector forks which needed replacing, but I'm not sure if that affected 2nd & 4th gear.

Keep us posted.

Just out of interest what is the difference in price of the two types?

Between standard & Sachs? well put this way. if put a standard one back in, it'll be costing you the labour time twice if hanging onto the car. I'd definatly go Sachs whilst in there. as for price, it's not something we deal with at Revo HQ, so make a few calls & shop around. several friends have managed to find decent deals on them.

There seems to be loads of variants to the Sachs clutch Kit. The reason why i am after a price comparison is the garage will only pay for the replacement clutch LUK style due to costs. Now as pointed out i should really be putting in a Sachs clutch as it can take more than the stock LUK. I have offered to pay the difference and just want to know what i am facing.. So far i am seeing LUK @ 200 ish and have seen the Sachs clutches going for around 500 ish for a 4 part kit, DMFW, Clutch, Cover and bearing.

So am i going in the right direction on the costs..

Now the really odd thing is i completely lost 2nd and 4th gear on Friday/Sat/Sun yet got in the car yesterday and all of a sudden its going in to 2nd and 4th perfectly.. My sanity is being tested by this car now.. Has any one else had intermittent gear select issues?

Not seen an intermittent issue like that myself. Take it the transmission mounts are ok (e.g not putting the gearbox out of alignment with the selector)?

Clutches on S3 which I'd assume are the same as TT-S:

Sachs Performance Reinforced Clutch Cover - Part Number 883082 999787
Sachs Performance Organic plate - Part Number 881864 999502

Not sure on prices, but call around a few sponsors / clutch suppliers / Euro car parts etc. and see what you turn up

Perfect thanks for the part numbers. Just waiting on the Garage now for a book in date. Hope its not to long as its doing my head in driving like miss daisy.. the sheen has been taken off this new car now so desparatre to get it all fixed up and pucker before i loose the plot and push for a full refund and get my Golf GTI back and start all over again with a newer version or even a TTRS.

OK so the car is going in to the garage tomorrow. Part numbers passed to them ready for what ever they do.

One last question. So the partls listed above are the recomended parts to use. What about the bearing and DMFW, are the stock versions adequate?

Stock DMF is fine, just try not to over rev the vehicle as it's over revving that can kill them. I'd always swap them out with each clutch change as if the go mid clutch cycle it costs more than the DMF to do the work.

Some have tried SMF and it makes the car a bit noisy and less OEM feel, so unless you want to modify to race going spec I wouldn't consider it.

Everything other than the clutch is fine from std.

Just had a call from the car dealer saying the garage that they use can not replicate the clutch slip... wtf!!! I dropped the car of at the garage and explained when it does it, Mainly under load in 4th, 5th and 6th on a steady up hill gradient..

Amazed.. they must have no hills in Farnborough!!

If you tell them to get on a dual carriageway early in the morning when the ambient temps are lower (preferably two people in the car), and then accelerate hard as they can in 6th gear from 50-60 miles an hour up, I found that was the best way to replicate it.

My revs would rise but there was no increase / pick up in speed. I felt it was much worse when cold than when warm, problem is if you wait until the temps go down to single digit you'll be out of your warranty window.

The only people I've found who seem to be able to replicate clutch slip are those being paid to fix it, those who are doing it warranty covered always seem not to be able to replicate the fault!

The be fair this is starting to hit my "taking the pi55" category.. I guess i am feeling the pain of buying a car from a dealer miles away and one that does not have in house mechanics.

the clutch slipped loads on the way to drop the car off. One thing is for sure it has taken the sheen of owing a new car.. two bank holidays messed about due to a new car "new to me that is" all this crap @ 27000 miles, kind of make me think sod it get my cash back and go and buy the flappy paddle version.. or something else all together.

I would certainly threaten that if they don't sharpen their ideas up, the flappy paddle version doesn't seem to have as many clutch issues as the manual.

Still no resolve as yet.. Had to mention Money back and trading standards just to get some movement. One thing is for sure my week and weekend has and is totally fuc@ed up due to all this flapping about.

Asked for a breakdown on the parts they are using and was told £400 contribution from me for the uprated parts.. I know they are better parts but 400 just for the Plate and cover at trade price seems a little steep to me. I can buy of internet for the same and that's not trade prices. They then pay 500 for a bearing and to fit it all. So from that it looks like i am pretty much paying for the clutch and they are paying for the labour.. Hardly a good offer given the hassle stress and 2 bank holidays with my son well and truly messed up. In the mean time i have a Citroen C1 to drive and that is the ****tiest cars i have ever driven in my life. One not very happy person at the moment.. None of the buzz of owning a new car has been experienced apart from the day i picked it up, it has been a steady down hill spiral since then.. A TTS should bring a smile to ones face..

Well they have had the car for 12 days and guess what, Still no parts to fit to the car... apparently. This is beyond a joke now.. Parts ordered Tuesday last week on a 48 hour del time.. Almost a week later and still no movement. Starting to really regret buying this particular car now..

I'd be looking to set a final date for collection and if they can't fulfil this then rejecting the car as this has taken way too long to resolve. You still have the issue as to whether they will do a proper job based on the fact they can't diagnose a slipping clutch.

I know its a right nightmare.. I just want this whole episode over... Massively missing not buying from a Main dealer and the facilities that come with main dealer. This car was bought from a dealer that has no garage facilities. The dealer are outsourcing the work the the nearest garage to them. (a Volvo specialist) My last cars were bough main dealer, any issues i had the car went in and a day or so late it was returned mint again... There are to many people in the loop on this purchase, and i am feeling that pain daily!!! It took a threat of TS just to get them to agree to paying for the new clutch.. I certainly feel like someone is taking the micky out of me now.

I have said if no parts land today then i will be collecting the car tomorrow no matter what.. If only i could go back in time and not bought this car...

Would love to know exactly what is going on with my car.. Wish i lived close so i could pop in and just see the car. Can not help feeling that they crashed the car trying to replicate the clutch slip and have blagged me ever since until the repairs been done.. It just all feels very odd.. Nothing adds up that has caused my brain to go in to suspicion mode. Now i said i was collecting the car today no matter what and and hay-presto apparently the parts are due today.. 1. How do they know they are due today as they should have been on 48 hour delivery last Tuesday yet the parts have not arrived in a week yet somehow they know they are receiving the parts today.... Odd!!!

I think your less than satisfactory treatment is very likely to skew your opinion on them. I'm still worried as to how well the work will be done based on the fact they'll be looking to minimise cost wherever possible. I just hope they've bought the Sachs clutch and not the s**tty LUK one (and pocketted the difference you supplied).

I am not a fan of main dealers, but I feel at least they have the capacity to deal with issues like this as Audi AG underpin the warranty claims for 'x' years after purchase. The only non main dealers I'd consider buying Audi's from are Fontain or AMS.

Hi Warren.. I have asked for the packaging and receipts for the parts bought and used. They are fitting a new Clutch/Cover and Bearing. All Sachs kit. Well that is what i have asked for only time will tell. I just hope they fit it all correctly and do a decent job.. If i have to return to the garage for anything even slightly related to the clutch or none selecting 2nd and 4th again then i will have no choice but to demand my money back. Almost did demand my cash back after speaking to TS but once it was explained to me that these things can take a long time to resolve and in the mean time i have the TAX, Insurance and bank payments to cover and any solicitors fees etc.. Path of least resistance was to go down the repair route. However the fact this has been dragged out is making my mind wonder what the heel is the issue... really not happy and the shine has well and truly been stolen away from me by these issues/ Tempted to get the wheels refurbished and sell it on and start again with another TTS or spend the extra and go RS.

The only question selling on may raise (so soon) by next buyer is why? Get round that by trading in at Audi as they just want the sale I guess.

The RS is quite a different animal, I was surprised how much. It's a very tactile experience and it's hard to explain without feeling it, but everything feels about 10% more robust in the main touchpoints (steering / gearbox / pedals etc.)

Tough call, only you and your wallet can decide.

I wanted a RS but could not justify the extra 10k ish on top of a TTS price, Badly wanted the 5 pot engine but i do loads of miles with work and decided the TTS was the correct way forward, Its returning MPG close to my Golf GTI so happy with that fact.

The 'S' cars do offer phenomenal bang for the buck which is why I've been 7 years in an 'S' and not an 'RS'.

My next will hopefully be an RS as I just fancy a stint in one, but the V8 in the RS5 whilst lovely just didn't stack up for me despite it being the better car overall (I can have RS power with S running costs from the V6T). If the RS5 had been a 4.0L V8 twin turbo I could have been swayed as I don't do much mileage these days.

I do love the TTS, Just with all the hassle i have experienced feel that i should not keep this car and let it go. I know what i am like and the next big issue will only peel back this scab and add to the issues from the past, I am not very good at leaving things once they have happened. The perfect solution would be give me my golf back and money you have this TTS back and i go and buy another one. you then sell this car to someone else. However this is not what is happening and now i am left feeling really depressed and angry, stressed about the whole situation. (You as in the garage that is)

Well today is the last day i am taking any crap over the car.. I have just called to ask if the parts arrived yesterday and if they have started to fit them to my car.. Waiting a response back. One way or another that car is going to be on my drive this afternoon or they the garage will be getting a visit with a pick up truck and it will be dragged back to my house, all costs will be directed to the dealer. Two weeks is way to long to get a clutch fitted.

I am off to collect my car. No works have been done. Apparently part are there but no work has started. i have instructed the garage to not touch my car as i am on my way to collect it.

The dealer kept repeating that they could not duplicate the clutch slip so basically they do not believe me when i say it has happened and constantly happens.

I will get video proof and go down the Trading standards route now as they have plenty of time to resolve this issue. over 1 month since first reported.

Wish me luck think i am going to need it.
