2.0 TFSI Diesel-ish at idle...

is this because the fsi technology is the same one used in diesel engines and fuel is dumped directly into the combustion chamber? i remember talking to a head tech at jaguar a few months back and he said that audi could not get fsi to work properly in the UK so did a half-a** job of it...

i remember this sound with a 2001 VW Polo at 60k miles and it was a tappet/valve lifter noise...

what Ive noticed..
- COLD START: Morning start up, slightly noisy and not as noisy as a diesel but picking up the revs and it quietens down
- HOT START: Start up after a long journey, 100 mile journey 80mph... stop off at services or at destination, start it up... and its loud at idle (almost like the oil is just not making it to the top of the engine).

is this just the nature of the beast? ive never noticed this over the last 65k miles so why now!!!!!!

Searched the forum and found this - My car does the same? Have you perhaps found out in the mean time what makes this sound?

i think this has been argued many times mine sounds a bit dieselish aswell just thought thats how it is runs fine etc

That's how they all sound. Doesn't indicate an issue with the engine.

I think your jaguar friend is talking rubbish to be honest.
The 2.0 tfsi engine is one of the most popular b7 and b8 a4 engines in America and they make the same noise.
The engines are designed in Germany and for uk cars are built in Germany too so nothing to do with the UK

Found a forum - Its apparently the high pressure fuel injectors so really nothing wrong with the car. So glad :)

Shuttle valve mounted at front of engine makes a hell of a rattling noise, but this quietens a little as thing warm up...

Agreed.

It just smacks of sour grapes.

The direct injection TFSi engines work well and turn out good power with economy and reliability.

Even in racing applications.

Bought 2.0 fsi recently car has loud sound near belt/tensioner for the first 3 minutes then settled to just hearing the diesel sounding injectors. Car is at 86k had a timing belt replaced from audi at 56k so still has a year to gonzo replace under there recommendations.

This is how it sounds on first start up in morning

as all above they all sound the same
just how there made

Mine doesn't sound normal on the initial cold start up as you can hear from the video I posted above. Need help panicking mite be damaging engine or not.
Drives and idles absoloutly fine not sluggish or misfiring responsive as normal.

On cold start the injectors are noisy until the auto-choke cuts out! IF yours IS noisier than any other (which I would doubt) the injectors may need replacing! But they do sound like diesels on cold start and they sound much worse with the bonnet up! I'm on 45k now and still think it's the noisiest petrol engine ever.

If you've just had it a few days, how can you know what "normal" is with these engines?

Because it settles had it checked warm by mechanic also normal it's the cold start loud noise coming from tensioner area has got me worried sounding like a diesel and loud injectors Ivan accept but them first 3 minutes dusnt sound normal

belt front chain rear

Yep belt front chain bback audirecommend timing belt change every 5 years or 75k which ever comes first hence why its changed but I don't understand that sound which disappears after 3 minutes

when was the last time it was serviced? Plugs, Air Filter, Fuel Filter, Oil! It runs like it's dirty.
