S3 400+ mile range club

I'd be ashamed to admit if i had any points on my licence but i have NONE and i never have.

You will soon tempting fate in that manner.. I got stopped doing 32 yes 32 in a 30 limit on a wide clear road good weather no schools! ****** ridiculous income generation . We are all at risk of being caught anytime anywhere.

Thats ridiculous I thought they were supposed to give you 10% for speedo error? Either way its still a bit close they must have had a quite day.

They told me I was doing 32 so presumably that was after the allowance. I was in continuous slow moving traffic and was got by a camera, no one else in front or behind me was stopped. I made a fuss and got punished for doing so £165 fine and 4 points back in 1995! Harsh..

Speedo is only allowed to error by 10% in overreading, not underreading by any amount.

Not bad for a 300bhp, AWD, auto...

Everyone complains when they get caught speeding, you could always stay in the limit. Wasn't my fault officer honest.

Stay in the limits of speed but no rules on how fast I can obtain the speed! ;)

Exactly why I have my TomTom to give me plenty of warning of fixed speed camera locations.
On my way back from my dealers this afternoon I was in the inside lane having slowed slightly because of a new section of 60mph limit on the A1. My TomTom had beeped to remind me about the average speed cameras that have been installed. Another driver in the outside lane was going much faster, suddenly noticed the high level cameras and slammed on his brakes and the van following only just stopped going into back of him.

I love my S3 because it can give me great economy when i want it and it is fast when i need it, the perfect combination. A point proved again on my way to work yesterday and i'm having trouble to believe it too but the fuel comp read 47.7mpg.

If that's correct or close then that is impressive (shows how versatile the car is really). Is your commute predominantly on motorways? S-tronic?

Do you have any proof?

I couldn't care less how people drive their cars myself as long as they don't endanger other people. I don't possess the self control to drive like you do though. I'm more like bleedsoff, it's not always about breaking speed limits, it's how you get there that's mostly the fun part.

It is on a dual carriage way not a motorway.

Yes i have a pic but when i stopped to take it it had dropped to 47.2mpg.

On my to work again 44.0mpg and yes it dropped when i stopped to take the pic.

I live on top of a hill. Does anyone want me to take a photo showing 87.2 mpg?? Seriously I have no doubt 40+ is achievable but why bother. I am getting 33/34 driving a mix of M Way, town and the occasional 'like I stole it' moment and very happy.

Sounds like the MPG is averaging up, you need to drive another 500 miles and not reset the counter.

That drive it like you stole it is why you get done for speeding.

Although there appears to be a lot of hate for milking miles out of an S3, you've got to respect that you can get 400 miles out of a tank when on a boring drive.

I tried milking my 8P on the last tank i put in, was going really well range stating 300 miles left after doing 60, got bored after this and ended up getting 270 out of it haha. Shows that the new 8V can be significantly better on fuel if you want it to be in comparison to the 8P though.

I've just ordered a 8V and driving a 8P at the moment, you reckon economy overall is better then? Useful on motorways as cannot speed anyways which I class as a boring drive

Excellent comment. It says I like frugality but I'm not afraid to let my hair down.

To give AM some support here I had the pleasure of driving to Wolverhampton and back on Thursday this week (from melton Mowbray) at peak times and managed to average 43mpg in my s3 s-tronic with vpower. Eco mode with the ACC set to 70, not that I touched that once as was heavy traffic and gantry speed limits etc.

Mpg does seem be improving as th miles go on too. I'm at about 2200 now. Just pottering I tend to get 32-34.

I should probably add that I've also had sub 20mpg out of mine when I went to Wales on the collection weekend and if I drove it like I stole it I'm sure I could do the same again. So much traffic though here in the midlands it's difficult to use any turn of speed for long - usually I just trundle along on ACC.

Could it be..... Another driver in the outside lane ALSO WITH A TOM TOM was going much faster, suddenly HEARD HIS TOM TOM BEEP and slammed on his brakes and the van following only just stopped going into back of him??

In my experience the TOM TOM was a really poor detector of cameras hence I bought a Talex.

Actually sorry OP what the hell has this got to do with 400+ mile club???

Filled up this evening 375. I have been nannying it a bit but dropping a couple if cogs and booting it when the roads clear.

Give me a break it's my first day! : )

mmm, 4 tanks down now, and getting no where near 400 miles, nearer 300, and thats with a lot of speed restricted motorways... I think 400 miles is a mirage!

I found once my 8P loosened up it's fuel economy started to improve (around 15k miles). I've only ever got 385 on a continuous motorway journey, but 8V is more furl economical / lighter etc.

Filled up today, 405 miles on the comp.

You keep saying over 400 on the comp when you fill up but what are you ACTUALLY getting? Have you done any of your own calculations or are you relying on the comp?
We all know the comps aren't the most accurate!!

I have done about 2300mile so far and have yet to even get 250 miles on a tank...all that means is that I am driving the S3 how it supposed to be driven...:angrymod:

What I do is fill up until it stops, reset the trip computer and see where it's at when it warns me it needs a drink, that way I know how far I've gone each time.

Only flaw in this is I've just filled up and it's my S3's first tank full (V-Power), so have no idea yet :sadlike:

Just relying on the comp as it is more accurate than me.

It's really not you know!! I have every receipt for fuel I've put in the S3 to date and I'm planning on calculating my mpg after 6 months just for interest sake not that it matters as when it needs fuel it gets fuel.....bottom line!!
But I must admit i am still struggling to believe 400+ sorry!!

So just to be clear, when you say you are getting 400+ miles per tank you are looking at the range miles just after you fill up and going by that? Or are you zeroing your trip after filling up and reading it when you fill up again?

Don't really care if you believe it or not, all i am saying is the fuel comp shows a range of 400+ miles when i fill up.

I did have an A3 2.0TDI which i had remapped to 170bhp and the range on that was 780 miles when the wife and i drove to Le Mans and yes we didn't have to fill up again until we arrived back home. From Le Mans to home that is.

Range is one thing and actual miles is completely different I'm afraid, next time you fill up just zero the trip and see what you get when you fill up again that's all I'm saying I'm not having a go mate.

I've just started using fuelly so should see how it stacks up. I got 37Mpg from the slip road in Leeds to Manchester today. I reset the trip after I caned it up the slip road. So about 40 miles from there I'd say.

Drove to Bolton in the afternoon and there were two slight tunnels that affected things on the way! : )

Well I've done over 50 miles since I filled up and I have a range of 350 miles still and not come down a notch on the gauge. This was after my first motorway drive using ACC and a couple of local trips (30/40 limits).

So, we'll see...
