OK, So picked up my first Audi in December. Now 4.5K miles in and 4 months of ownership later I have only good things to say about this car; my best to date. I note that many people on this forum drop off once they have collected, so I am taking the time to post for those who stay around and help those visiting while awaiting delivery, they have been very useful for me while in the same position and since.

Previously owned a 2.2 Civic and no matter how I drove it I never managed to achieve more than about 52Mpg, typically 42mpg (around 2 mpg lower than my COD). I recently had a situation where I had to drive from Dundee to Glasgow between 60 - 65mph, not my normal speed range. I held mostly around 60mph on cruise and economy (not convinced that any drive setting would have given the same result) , which on this trip resulted in 75 to 80% 2 cylinder mode. My DIS reads around 2mpg high typically when doing actual calculations and I normally, now run in get 44-46mpg on my daily commute, this has been steadily improving from my 38mpg start in December. So 56mpg on an 80mile motorway run is awesome for a petrol engine, but critical it stays in 2 cylinder mode to achieve, the continuous readout was hovering between 60 - 63mpg so I reckon I could have crossed 60 had I not reached destination. I finally hit 58.9 (sorry for the blurry picture - taken by passenger and took ages even to lock onto gauges. (see attached)

Also I cant believe that when driving a petrol I can move up the gears quicker than my Civic - 16mph 3d gear, 24mph 4th gear so in crawling traffic with 2 cylinder mode engaged you still get mid 40's return, which is pretty amazing too, however it is very very easy to "break" the mpg on my 10 mile trip compared to a diesel, brief periods of fun can drop you below 40 mpg easily.

Anyway thought this worth a post for those considering the diesel vs COD option, if your careful it can reap rewards. In gear motorway performance too is mighty impressive with effortless silent speed build from 60 - 80mph very close to my wife's 2.0l mini SD, which on paper just should not be the case with the torque difference's. I also find that it's much easier to drive slower, I typically drove my civic around 75mph on the gauge vs 65mph now - not for fuel efficiency but the car is so quite its difficult to discern the speed from 60 - 80mph - they feel the same. The speed alert set to 80mph is a must for me as it drifts easily way beyond if your not careful.

I don't typically drive for mpg, but traffic flow typically eliminates the ability to have fun, but when the opportunity presents itself I get no where near this level of return ;)

Picked mine up on Saturday and absolutely loving it! It is so different and better to my 2011 A3 Black Edition that I had in so many ways - smooth, responsive, silent and rides the bumps so much better even on 18's and sports suspension.

The 1.4 TFSI COD is a good strong pulling engine and has excellent mpg. One wonders why they've bothered with the 1.6 diesel...

Impressive MPG figures. I've done 900 miles in my 2.0Tdi and only have it averaging around 43mpg since day dot and drive 80% of the time in efficiency mode with an extremely light right foot.

Todays commute was up to 50mpg and I did get 52mpg at the weekend.

I think a lot of it is down to my commuting roads. Lots of twisty A and Bs and lots of gear changing!

I'm still struggling to understand how you get to see on the display the number of cylinders in use. Are there any tips on keeping in 2 cylinder mode. I guess it's down to rate of acceleration / braking / revs maintained / gear changes?

Better CO2 emissions, for those that want no tax to pay... also puts at least one model in the A band for tax.

Loving that people are really enjoying their COD and chips! I should be getting mine at the end of the month!! :D

If you set the on board computer as per the picture in mine it will show the " 2 cylinder mode" when it activates. Light "loud pedal" pressure and flat motorway yields the best results, once you see it displaying you will start to figure out how to optimise. One thing that irritates me is that 2 cylinder mode only kicks in when 1500+ revs acheived, meaning when crawling in 1st in traffic jams you are still running 4 cylinders.

Is that the time showing in the display? I can't get any of this to show!!
Time to ask the dealer

I have changed displays now as thought it was cool keep seeing it change to 2 cylinder mode but find it quite annoying now.

I am not able to see the 2-cylinder mode in my DIS. Do you know if there was an update to enable this?

My car was built September 2013.

I think there must have been. My car was built a few months before yours and I can't see the 2-cylinder mode.

I believe it can be enabled on our cars using VCDS.

I think it was Nov 2013 it came in. I would have thought the dealership would be able to update the ecu to a later version. Might cost you though unless it can be part of a service...

My 1.4 COD also is a December model and with 2K miles. I managed 62 mpg Portsmouth to New Forest last weekend. However to do that using the ACC I stayed at 55mph. When towing a caravan on a similar journey, it goes down to 33 mpg , also at 55 mph, but surprisingly driving on 2 cylinders but no the engine cut out when stopped.

I initially ordered a 1.4COD S Line after having being blown away by it on a test drive. Wonderful little engine! In the end though I changed it to a 184PS TDi Sport for the same price.

I thought I would hold the record - 60+ out of a petrol is excellent, albeit at 55mph. We have a 1l 3 cylinder Aygo that cant break 55mpg which weights only 850Kg vs the 1250Kg of a sportback.

I would be pretty interested to see how the standard 122ps 1.4 & 150 diesel engines real world mpg compares to the cod. I purchased more for the extra power and lower tax than the better mpg, that's a bonus. Getting 62mpg from fuel that costs 8-10p/l less probably means you would need to hit around 65+ mpg to better in a diesel.

Cant figure the logic on 33mpg on 2 cylinder mode when pulling that extra weight, I can see once you hit speed and maintain the extra weight has significantly less impact than when stop start driving - so 2 pots may well be able to handle the load, but I haven't seen less than about 42mpg on continuous readout when flicking between 2 & 4 pots.

From the 600 miles we have done so far we're averaging 36mpg according to the DIS.

Nothing special but it's mainly being used for crawling around town and 200 miles with bikes strapped to the roof.

I've seen over 85mpg with mine compared to 57mpg from 1.6 ecoboost focus under the same conditions on the same journey..

I've done 900 miles in mine so far, and at 1.4litres it is a small engine, but that's the very thing it doesn't feel like, it is smooth and pulls away effortlessly. If I didn't know what size engine was in the car I would have said its a lot larger than a 1.4.

Oh I'm not knocking it. I only changed it for the 184PS diesel as I thought I might regret not getting one every time I see a diesel. As you say, I found it smooth and effortless, so impressive in fact I was prepared to buy one. In the end though the fact the diesel could be had for the same price and had higher residual value convinced me to get the TDI. Which, in it's own right is a mighty engine. Currently averaging 49mpg after 1100 miles and not being too light on the throttle.

I went through a similar thought process to you, nearly changing my mind on a couple of occasions to the 184ps petrol engine, thinking the 1.4 was probably too small, but stuck with it and am pleased I did.

Has anyone managed to get the advertised fuel consumption by Audi on the 1.4TFSI COD?

Fuel consumption in l/100 km
urban 5.9
extra-urban 4.1
combined 4.7
