hi guys

ive got around 4k to spend on my amk to bring it up to speed power wise so after some ideas

currently its standard map but running a B5 3" tip with jetex filter, De cat pipe and soon will have a magnex system fitted.

ive contacted bill about rods and all consumables when fitting rods so im just awaiting a reply on this.

i also have a bosch 044 on order and im looking at WMI kits all input is greatly received so dont be shy with your ideas

this car is a toy so im after lots of power, well the most i can get for the money plus lots of pops,bangs,flames but currently im going to be restricted to the standard engine management for now (emerald is on the cards for a later date)

so to sum up 4K is the max for engine work i can spend

suspension is separate and so far its fully Polly bushed with powerflex black in the front arms, bilstien shocks and eibach springs, breaks are LCR brembos up front and standard rear with DS3000 all round and ATE blue fluid ect all prity much basics sorted in that respect

cheers all

Is your engine VVT? Wideband ECU? Have a large port head fitted?

If not then those items above could be worth talking to Bill about when you are talking about rods and consumables....before we start talking about matching manifolds and turbos and DPs etc.

hi the car is VVT and wide band but small port, i was under the impression large port will not be of much benefit unless going big boost or 400+

plus if changing to large port head there is the extra expense of rebuilding the head or at least exhaust guides plus new inlet manifold ect i think that money could be better spent else were unless the general consensus is to go large port?

There is no reason the std ECU needs replacing tbh... ME7 can be tuned to suit practically all power levels these days...

With this 4k budget... is this based on you doing the work so the budget is a parts spend or are you factoring in labour too? Bill typically charges 1300 ish quid inclusive for a rod change so labour can eat a budget in no time

If doing the work yourself then I would suggest the first thing is to work out what power level you are hoping for then look at what parts are needed to achieve that reliably

350hp is about the limit for a K04 hybrid these days, beyond that then arguably you are looking at larger framed turbos like the GT30... with this however you need to consider other components in the build too to achieve the power potential

Larger turbos also mean power delivery will be higher up the rev range than the K04 variants... this will require head work to achieve reliable performance and can add another £1k or so to the parts spend...

Other things to consider is engine condition etc... have seen engines vary wildly in condition once 100k miles and up... compression test and leak down test is worth while doing pre-build to establish a base line... check ovality and condition of bores etc to see if all thats needed is a light hone and new rings or you may be into an engine build which will make your budget take a hit..

hi

sorry yes all labor will be done myself the car is 47,000 mile motor will full comprehensive service history i personally know the full history of this car from new so im not expecting any real problems, i know this is just an assumption but im hoping the bores will be ok and be in a sound condition. im hoping for just a hone with new rings when fitting the rods if not i will tackle the problem once ripped apart.

so for not take it as a totally sound engine with all labour completed by myself and the spec if the engine will be standard apart from rods

im happy to change to GT30 style turbo or go for a hardcore ko4 350+ would be a nice figure to aim towards but 4K is the top line if going BT

Magnex? Hmmmm.. Hope they're larger than they used to be in their silencers.. Dreadfull in days gone by

I don't think they've changed much bill.. Small piping still..

The magnet a no no then guys? What's the issue poor internal bore on the boxs?

Bill the email was sent this morning to your sales email address

Paul tuffy. I have the chance to buy your old gt30 set up but want some pros and cons with this please

Pros: POWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!

Cons: erm....

Not sure what you are after but I only sold it on as I wanted to go tubular manifold and more power... :)

Dont know when you are starting this but i have gone for a TFSI Hybrid and its just about finished so my build thread will be coming soon...im expecting it to be knocking on the 400bhp,s door + with a few nice touches inc an 86mm DP..;)

hummmmm decisions decisions!

ive been folowing a few build threads lately and do like the TFSI build but im also being pulled to a gt30 build now as its a kit ready to bolt on, only thing that worries me is the lag of a gt30? also the tfsi will need some messiong in regards to downpipe and intake ect hummmmm

TFSi is a lot of pipe work changes....

you have to balance the output vs your goals..

Larger frame turbo will of course have more power potential, but its mid to top end..
TFSi is low to mid, and suffers surge like a mofo when pressing on even on std tfsi cars they come on

tbh i think im swaying to tuffys old gt30 set up if im honest, bill have you seen the email yet about the head gasket kits and rods? for aum and amk?

i just need to work out total costs, also bill what am i looking at to map a set up like this?

cheers guys

A lot off messing with the Water/oil lines for sure, looking forward to how the cooling behaves as the pipe work is very short, so lag should be minimum..

right ive bit the bullet and bought tuffys old gt30 set up. this is going to be fun fitting all this to a currently standard s3!

currently thinking of just doing a rod upgrade with hone and new rings, oil pump ect and going for 350hp+ can anyone see anything else that needed on the shoping list? just waiting on some prices from bill regarding rods and some little things but i already have a 4bar, bosch 044, welly cooler ect

let the fun begin

No tips guys?

Bill have you had chance to take a look at my email yet?

Cheers guys hopefully have the turbo kit with me today :)

Check the gudgeon pins in the small ends as they sometimes need a light hone to get them fitting right... make sure the shell tang slots face the inlet side of the engine when putting together... with the ARP bolts you need to use ARP lube (grease) on the threads and the contact area of the bolt face, torque to 55flbs in three cycles... essentially go round all the rods tightening bolts to 55ftlbs then go round again to slacken off... do this twice then tighten to 55ftlbs for a third and final time..

Some rod instructions say 50ftlbs... if thats the case then do it to 50ftlbs instead

<tuffty/>

Just out of interest, i.e the tangs facing the inlet, is that actually a fact? i have done mine this way after asking a few people inc Bill, some said it didnt matter so i went with the percentage that won...;)
but i could not find the info anywhere...

Just about to start an engine rebuild the tangs on my original big end shells faced the inlet, but if you have a look on integrated engineering website it says tangs should face the exhaust side. Who is right?

Link to where it says that? tangs should face the inlet... this is as per OE

<tuffty/>

Not sure on how to add link on iPad, but it clearly says tangs should face exhaust side, on integrated engineering website if you go to the 144x20 forged rods section, then to the FAQs at the bottom of the page it's the second question

Hummm... wouldn't be the first time IE got it around their neck tbh...

Having stripped a fair few 1.8t's in the past and OE rods have tangs facing inlet side...

<tuffty/>

Yea my tangs definitely faced the inlet side to should I fit the new rods the same way

If you're only aiming for 350bhp wouldn't it make more sense and be a hell of a lot cheaper to go hybrid and sacrifice 10 or so bhp? I mean for the amount of work going into a BT conversion I'd be wanting 400, my opinion of course.
