Morning All,

Apologies if this has been answered before, I'm pretty new on your forum and couldn't find reference to it in a search through.

Can your mobile's SMS be read through the A3's MMI? I'll be collecting my A3 S-Line Sportback in May, and it'll have the standard Tech Pack. I'll be connecting an iPhone 5 to it via the green cable.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Thanks loads,

Chris.

The title says you have the standard MMI, but the post suggests you have the tech pack... which is it?

The cable makes no difference to SMS support, as that is done over bluetooth anyway. I would have thought the tech pack would support it - but the iPhone Message Access Profile in bluetooth is incomplete so doesn't offer as much as other phones. Not sure about the standard MMI.

Hi,

Apologies for the confusion. The MMI is the standard on that comes with the car, ie no upgrade to the Tech Pack. Getting my description mixed up :)

Thanks loads for the info, very useful.

Cheers,

Chris.

not true, with tech pack you can receive messages on the MMI with any Iphone but can't send them

You can receive messages, but I believe you can't view messages already in your inbox and it has trouble on receiving the 2nd one or later or something. And you can't reply to them either. From what I've read on here anyway!

Sounds pretty good fellas, cheers for that!! Don't think we're losing out much by not being able to send them, can you imagine trying to type one out on that!!

Thanks for your help

You can dictate with Audi Connect and Android devices, and you can reply with templates on the standard tech pack (eg, 'Yes', 'No', 'I'll call later')

I've still not seen if the soon to be launched iOS In The Car will be available for Audi or not. Looks an interesting development...

I don't think it will, and I don't think many will really, even though a few have got interest. Audi are already involved with a consortium to port android to in-car devices I think I read, and there was a ruling the other day which is going to force Apple to standardise the sockets on their phones to micro USB, which will kill the car thing. I still haven't seen a single car with siri eyes-free installed, that they were raving about a few years ago and supposedly had the support of dozens of car makers...

Unfortunately Apple CarPlay won't be going into the VAG Vehicles....

I know Audi have just signed a massive deal with Vodafone to have all new vehicles from (2015/2016) to be pre-built with Voda Sims installed using their own MMI system. Looks like they are sticking to their own tech for quite a while.

As I've never owned a iphone, and never will, I can only go on what Audi state in their compatibility chart and there is no mention of being able to receive SMS messages at all. I guess those who have one know better...

I think it would be a shame if car manufacturers simply stuck with one integrative solution for their models, be it Android or iOS, or even to a single carrier for that matter. Surely the way forward for all of us is a simple plug and play for whatever system suits our needs the best.

This article seems to cover Apple's idea pretty well. Not seen an Android one yet, but guess that would be equally superb for people who prefer that platform. As Cruiser89 mentioned earlier, no VAG on the list so far for CarPlay.

All the best,

Chris.

Exactly. Audi are against tying people down to support for only particular kinds of hardware, which is likely why they won't be implementing CarPlay. It's a closed, proprietary system. I think the project they are involved in is to use Android as the OS of the in car system, which would support all the open standards that the current QNX system does (and more most likely), whereas CarPlay is something entirely different - it's about getting the car's OS to allow the phone to take over the screen via a video link, and receive input from the system as I understand it. The car manufacturer would have no control over what would appear on it, opening it up for exploitation by other hardware to enable things like VIM very easily - which is I imagine a whole minefield of problems they will want to avoid. With that and the fact that Apple are being forced to switch to micro USB (though no doubt they'll get around that with an adapter instead of doing it properly), I really don't think CarPlay is going anywhere.

I guess as well that while car manufacturers are still selling integrated SatNav systems for hundreds of pounds, they're unlikely to let you simply plug your mobile in and have the one you use on that usable on the media screen. I'd be well up for that though, only one set of POIs etc!

The whole future of incar media's likely to change in the next few years, and hopefully with a better experience for us all. I think for years we've had to make do with systems in our cars that aren't as good as they could be, certainly when compared to the developments made in portable technology.

Yeh, it'll be good when you can have apps in your car, however that's done, just as with a smartphone. Google nav in the car's system would be nice.

That'd be bob on. Optimised apps work so well, it would be superb to have access to those in some way or another. Even accessing our mobile calendars/organisers would be a fantastic start.

IPlayer would help the kids when they're bored too ;)

if you have an iPhone you should buy a Merc and Android for Audi....... I have the wrong ****** car!
You would think in this day and age,..... it is 2014 by the way, that all cars would be able to talk to all phones not just specific ones more than others!
