With the road tax rules changing later this year, what do people think of it?

You no longer need to display a disk in the window, I'm sure the detailing fans will like this.

Also, can pay for tax monthly and you won't be able to sell a car with tax on it, no longer a selling feature of "6 months tax".

Its unfortunate about the selling side of things, but when you think about it, it means when you sell your car, any remaining amount will be refunded. The plus point is that new owners then have to prove they have valid insurance documents, mot if required to purchase road tax, ensuring they are road legal. That has got to be reassuring to all other road users in the event of an accident. Thats my take on it anyway. :) x

Interesting, they did the same up here a few years ago.....they scrapped the very sticky stamp you would need to place in the middle of your rear reg' plate every year....but they didn't scrap the road tax! Not sure what you Guys pay for road tax these days...but up here it's about £190 quid a year for my 2.0t fwd......am sure it's cheaper back in the Old Country.

Yours untaxed windowly

Shame the pay monthly is 5% extra whereas every other bill offers a discount for paying by Direct Debit.

£220 a year for a 2.0T FSI here at the moment Al. I assume it's going up tomorrow.

Could be worse I was looking at manual B8 S4s. They are £485 a year from tomorrow. Eeeek.

Don't know the full ins and outs, and maybe I'm being over cynical, but it looks like Mr Osborne will now also score on just about every private used car sale. Instead of having the option to leave tax on the car for a seamless change over seller will now be refunded, but only for complete months remaining, buyer will have to backdate to start of current month so unless sale takes place on last day of the month the car is effectively taxed twice for a month. Nice work if you can get it!

Wonder if you will be able to pay £30 or less over 12 months

There are only two thinks in this life that are certain. Call me cynical but they are "Death and Taxes" :) x

Also if you go to view a second hand car perhaps travelling miles and decide to do the deal you can not drive it home, you would not be insured even if you are fully com on your existing car as you can only drive another car not owned by you and the other car has to have a valid policy in place, many ins company's don't allow you to drive another car now anyway, no ins means you can't tax it, the second hand car market is really going to suffer, there will be an awful lot of deals done with people driving home with no tax or ins.

Surely you just call your insurance co. there and then to insure, it. And tax will be able to be purchased 24 hours a day via the phone with the new keeper part of the V5.

Suppose it will depend on how quickly the system could update the insurance database to enable you to tax it.

How`s that work then Scotty, I`ve just paid £280-00 today on 2.0tfsi B7 quattro, was this for your B7 or B8?

Dunno. Mine's the 200bhp originally.

I think its easier to let £25 quid out of my pocket every month then a one off payment of £280
the car sales/transfers will be a pain in **** thou..

Yes the database wouldn't be quick enough and what about sundays?

My insurance company are open 10 till 4 on Sundays and the Tax can be done 24/7 by phone. It'll be the database that screws things up for most people.

Sellers will not be able to sell a car with tax on it. Its the sellers responsibility to get the refund, the new owner can't.

5% premium for paying monthly.

This is all active from October 1st.

If you have a valid tax disc on that day you can just take it out of you windscreen, or leave it in, your choice. The offence of not displaying is abolished.

Dug this out:

" Buying a vehicle

From 1 October, when you buy a vehicle, the vehicle tax will no longer be transferred with the vehicle. You will need to get new vehicle tax before you can use the vehicle.

You can tax the vehicle using the New Keeper Supplement (V5C/2) part of the vehicle registration certificate (V5C) online or by phone - 24 hours a day, 7 days a week."

Refunds will apparently be automatic once you notify DVLA of change of ownership which is better

Database is quick enough and its live, pay online when you buy the car and just like insurance you are covered as soon as you leave the forecourt or the sellers house.

Totally disagree, I remember having to wait 24hrs for the database to update when attempting to tax my old MR2. This was only a couple of months back as well.

You can't at the moment, and won't be able to under the new scheme either.

Not getting a discount for Direct Debit seems unfair, so I'll carry on doing what I do at the moment - I pay monthly into an interest earning savings account to pay all the car bills (tax, MOT, servicing, insurance) so I pay monthly and earn interest :eyebrows:

My Citroen C1 costs £20 for 12 months road tax, and my B7 RS4 will cost £500 for 12 months road tax (I make that an average of £260 per car in my "man maths":readit:).

I don't really care what they do, but I have to say it will be nice not to have an arbitrary disc in the window.

I don't suppose for a minute the price will reduce, I just hope some of whatever they save goes back into fixing the b******d roads.

I own a company that makes tax disc holder, we employ over 100 people.... what happens to my staff, me and my family home???

I'll have to close the business.....

But as long as people don't need a bit of paper in the window...

Or,.... with the help of your staff come up with an alternative product that uses the same technology which you can switch production to.

Like, a holder for a "No Cold Callers" type of sign - many Councils offer the signs but, ours at least, doesn't offer any way of fixing them in the window (and Sellotape only lasts a few weeks especially in the Winter).

There has to be a market for joke stickers to put in the holders, I don't want to have to bin mine, it's a nice shiny alloy one that cost £17!!

What kind, plastic (floppy) or trick (alloy) ones.

Obviously I wouldn't want to see people in business affected by this, but surely you must have seen it coming? As has been suggested, diversification into new product is key as nothing lasts forever. Fingers crossed for you (& the staff)

that was stretching it a bit thin....!
